Does anyone here know for sure what 12 string guitars did Fred Neil play in his recordings and on stage? I see photos on line of one he is playing with a very long peg head that I don't recognize. Please post here if you know what he played, no guessing please.

Probably the best answer to this ever-popular query is to explore why
everybody's talkin' with the dolphins about Fred Neil's 12-string guitar
on the other side of this life.

My solo, acoustic, instrumental 12-string guitar version of "The
Letter," a Wayne Carson Thompson composition; #1 US Billboard for The
Box Tops, 1967.

People may think that getting one of the same instruments will have one
sounding much like the player in question.

They may be right. I want to sing those low notes like he did. I wonder
what larynx Fred was using?

Certainly would be easier to not reply at all or to say, "I don't know." I'm 63 I'm not trying to sound like Fred Neil, no can do that, he had a unique voice that can't be duplicated. He played some guitars, it was only a simple question to see if someone knew what he played, nothing else, no ulterior motive, just a matter of reference.

Looking over images at Wikipedia I can almost read the headstock inlay
on one guitar that shows up in many of the pics, while I note that more
than one guitar shows up over the years.

At his website the photos from Montreux Jazz Festival show him with what
looks to me to be a Martin D12-35.

Somewhere there's bound to be a shot where the name on the headstock of
that frequent flyer is legible.

"Hey! I bought this 000-28 Eric Clapton Signature Martin, and it doesn't
sound like Eric at all! I want my money back!"

Looking at the website http://www.fredneil.com/photo-gallery/ (and I am
guessing but it is partially readable) photo 14 of 20 appears to read
Miguel.

(OP: This is effectively a room where folks hang out together and
banter. If you can hang maybe something will be learned.)

Bingo! I think you've done it.

This lacks the name/logo, but the headstock, etc., looks apropo.

I know it was a Martin , I just don't know which model, when I saw him in 91 I believe he had a six string Martin with him. Chris would know better than I , if any of you know who I'm talking about he would be the person to ask .

Fred Neil played a "Miguel Companie", 12-string, and on the label it said,"Specialising in 12-string guitars". Fred's repairman in NYC, Marc Silber(now of Berkeley,CA), gave one to me as a gift, knowing how I loved Fred. I'm a luthier, and although I glued the guitar back together, it was very lightly built, very fragile, and eventually imploded. It was an X-braced top with no bridge-plate, instead relying on a massive rosewood bridge to take the accumulated stress of the tension of 12 strings. I saved the back. It was dreadnaught shaped, with 12 frets to the body on a mahogany neck with a wide nut. The top was spruce, and the body was Brazilian rosewood.....Al Milburn, luthier

He played a Miguel 12 string. One of Miguel's early
models, maybe #5. Bob Ingram in Miami I believe also had one.
Perhaps he will respond. They were fantastic instruments.
I owned #33 when I lived there. Wish I had never sold it,
but I did. It is the only guitar I ever wished I had back.
