Hello friends I am vrk, a new member of this newsgroup rmim. I was
greatly impressed by the quality of output of this newsgroup. After a
lot of hardwork I have been able to work my way into this newsgroup. As
the subject mentions here, my special area of interest is plagiarisms
in the indian film music industry - special reference to Hindi film
music. I would like a complete and documented list of all instances of
plagiarisms to be prepared - be the plagiarisms from Bangla music,
Tamil music or Western Music. I am sure the existing members of this
newsgroup would have a lot to contribute to this topic. The two posts
available on this topic are very rudimentary in nature and basically
dwell at length on Madan Mohan's lifting of Sajjad Husain's tune "tujhe
kya sunaaoon ae dilruba tere saamne mera haal hai"

However there are numbers like that by Dean Martin "The man who plays
the mandolino" which were lifted in toto by Snehal Bhatkar for his
Hemant Kumar classic "Lahron pe lahar" (Chhabili)

Ghar Aaya mera pardesi the heaven part of the heaven and hell sequence
in aawaara was scored by Jaikishen as against Shankar's composition of
the hell sequence (tere bina aag yeh chaandni tu aaja) was supposed to
have been taken from an Arabian singer Alab ul wahdini

Kindly either e-mail to me or post on this group any other brilliant
plagiarisms you know of. It would be the first step towards the
compilation of a comprehensive directory

dear friends

I am indeed buoyed by the response I got from Karthik and Indranil.
However Indranil has mentioned that the list is endless. I am trying to
make this a comprehensive list of plagiarism so I would not mind an
endless list. However, I would also request the posters (the people who
post) to include the percentage of plagiarism thus

50% if refrain or mukhda has been lifted per se
100% if the total song has been lifted per se
10-30% (discretionary) if interlude music or the likes has been lifted

I am carrying on with my list of plagiarisms and hope to consolidate on
a list of at least 500 within a month's time. I would also request
other members to let me know if they dispute some entries.

1. Dil tera kisne toda from Dayaavaan (LP) has been lifted from Then
paandi cheemaiyilay (Naayakan- Illaya Raaja)

2. Ek baar zaraa phir keh do from Bin baadal barsaat (Hemant Kumar) has
been lifted from Ei paath jodi naai shesh hoye (saptapadhi - md
probably hemant kumar??)

3. Chaahe meri jaan tu lele from Dayaavaan has been taken from
Nayakan's Nila adu vaanathu melay

4. Aake teri baahon mein (Vansh - Anand Millind) has been taken from
vaa vaa anbey anbey from agni nakshatram

5. main to diwaani huyi (vansh) has been taken from thoongaada vizhigal
randu from agni nakshatram

6. tu tu tu tu tu taara (bol radha bol - anand millind ) from rakamma
kaiyya thattu (dalapathy)illaya raaja

7. taana na na tandaana (bulundi - anand millind) from aadi paarein
mangaatha (may maatham- ar rehman)

8. tumse milne ko dil karta hai (phool aur kaante -nadeem shravan) from
tumse izhaare haal kar baithe (mere mehboob- naushaad)

3. Itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha (Chhaaya) salil chowdhary was inspired

4. Chandaa se hoga woh pyaara (Main bhi ladki hoon) Chitragupta was
taken from a number from the movie (Naanum oru penn)

5. De di hume azaadi bina (Jaagriti) Hemant Kumar was lifted from Kya
mil gayaa bhagwaan (anmol ratan) Naushad (I think the original for this
too is a pakistani number. Can somebody clarify?

movie Brahma, one in the movie Khoon ka sindoor and another one. Do not
remember the wordings of any of these. Anybody??

7. Mory Kante's Akawba beach was lifted by LP for Jumma chumma (hum)

lifted from Mera Sundar sapna beet gayaa (Do Bhaai) S d burman

Wait a minute! This can hardly be called a "lifted" or "plagiarised" tune if
both the MD's are Hemant Kumar. By that account, put down Salil Chowdhury as the
MD who plagiarised the most, because he has used his original Bengali tunes in
Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Oriya, Assamese, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
What's wrong with an MD using his own tunes for different songs in different
languages? SDB, and RDB too would qualify as "plagiarisers" under your
qualifications since a lot of their Hindi compositions come from Bengali
originals. For those wise guys who say --- "RDB would qualify in any case under
any qualification"--may you get struck by gout, lumbago, the bubonic plague and
have your crops eaten by locusts.

song...when i need u....incidentally this song was also covered by rod
stewart.

southern u.s. ) marching song that was popular during the civil war.

bole(shaukeen) have the same SD (bengali) source.

....raina beet jayen(amar prem), beeti na beeti raina...have remarkable
similarities to a couple of SD songs( i forget which).

plagiarism , i think, is a SERIOUS indian sin.....i did my schooling in St.
Xaviers Calcutta...and we used to have this school anthem "proud of our
school.."etc with a really catchy tune......imagine my surprise when one
week after landing here, i was watching a notre dame football game....lo and
behold....the irish fight song sounds exactly like my school anthem......so
much for our holy fathers!!!

Mithe bol bole-Kinara is from SD original "Madhu Brindaban-e dole

Have you heard enough songs from other countries so as
to take the liberty to label plagiarism as an *Indian*
sin. Many Spanish songs I hear are lifted from
recent English tunes. Even recent English hits
like "groovy lind of love", "puttin on the ritz"
were lifted from old english songs of the 40's
and 60's. Recently UB40 re-recorded an Elvis hit.
But I am sure nobody accuses these songs, calling
plagiarism a national sin.

I generally refrain from posting something that
is not directly related to information on music.
I agree that plagiarism is a sin, but I
vehemently oppose plagiarism being called an
Indian sin.

dear friends

Great! The responses are coming in thick and fast. But I still feel
that the instances of plagiarism amongst recent composers far outnumber
those of earlier composers. I am sure they were as guilty as the
current lot. It is just that with MTV and V coming in, their sins are
more apparent. I think instances of plagiarisms can be further sub-
divided into
- plagiarising from International music
- plagiarising from Pakistani music
- Plagiarising from Indian folk music
- Plagiarising from Indian classical music
(I know many of you would frown upon this last category but in some
instance a known creation in a raga is plagiarised per se. for instance
the raaga hamsadhwani in carnatic classical music has a famous creation
called vaataapi ganapathim bhajeham. There is one hindi song which
goes "jaa tose na boloon sakhi ri" and it is absolutely like the
carnatic raaga. Sorry but i don't think i can give any credit to the md
(who was it?, probably Vijay Raghav Rao) However there also exists an
instance of Madan Mohan using the raaga madhuvanti for “rasm-e-ulfat”
from the movie Dil ki raahein (1973) . Listen to any other creation in
this raaga (like guruvar deejo and you will realise why madan mohan has
done such a fine job)

Well I carry on with the list of plagiarisms now

Tumse milke na jaane kyon (pyaar jhukta nahin md-lp) is a straight lift
from a popular pakistani no. (which one??)

Hai na bolo bolo (andaaz-sj) is a lift from papa he loves mama

Haiko haina (muqaddar ka baadshaah-viju shah) is a straight lift from
Aiko aiko aiko(some western artiste??)

Suit boot mein aaya kanhaiyya( krishan kanhaiya-rajesh roshan) is also
a straight lift from the same number

Yahaan ke hum sikander (JJWS-jatin lalit) is a lift from Pinball wizard

soldier soldier (soldier-anu malik) is a straight lift from roja
jaaneman or kaadal rojaave from roja ar rahman

hum to the anjaane hum dono yeh na jaane from jungle love-anand millind
is a straight lift from tere mere beech mein (ek duje ke liye -lp)

na sun sun sun bura (some lp film starring dharmendra probably aaya
sawanjhoom ke) sound very similar to the chipmunk song

khoobsoorat haseena (mr x in bombay - lp) has been lifted per se by anu
malik for baazigar's number ae mere humsafar

anu malik again lifted dean martin's man who plays the mandolino into
yeh kaali kaali aankhein (faster speed though)

interestingly this number was originally lifted by snehal bhatkar for
the movie chhabili the song was laharon pe lahar (two versions one a
solo by hemant kumar another one a duet between hemant and nutan)

dil me hai tu (daava jatin lalit) is based on mehbooba mehbooba from
sholay rdb i believe this number is a copy of some other western number
by demis roussos. can someone let me know the name of this song

One gentleman called Ketan has objected to the listing of ek baar zaraa
phir kehdo fromthe movie bin baadal barsaat as an instance of
plagiarism if the md was hemant kumar in the Bengali version also

I totally agree with him, all i was doing was trying to confirm if the
md of the bengali song ei paath jodi naai shesh hoy from saptapadhi was
indeed hemant kumar. Can anyone please confirm that ?

I expected a lot of other languages like Marathi, Gujrati, Punjabi to
be represented in this list, but it seems that we have only Bengalis
and Tamil instances out here.

bye for now

here are a few more....

dekhta hoon kahin larki haseen from sanam teri kasam ...is partially taken
from an old pakistani religious song.....incidentally there was a more
recent song ...ya mustapha ya mustapha from a sunjay dutt movie that was
taken from the same song.

there is a song in indrajeet which goes main na jhoot bolun, main na kufr
tolun....the first part of the song is taken from a pakistani song.

tu meri zindagi hain from ashiqui is lifted straight from a pakistani song

...and of course ....tu cheez bari hai mast mast ...from dam mast kalandar.

chori chori yun jab ho .....from some sunny deol movie is a straight lift of
walk like an egyptian.

there are a couple of songs from yugpurush that are lifted from
rabindrasangeet tunes....one from pagla hawa badol dine, one is actually a
hybrid of aguner poroshmoni and a song from anondo ashrom.....amar shopno
tumi...

....etc.....etc.....etc....i think we are slowly moving from the category of
sin to MAHA sin!! :-)

Can you tell me how a composer who is deliberately trying to compose in Raga
Hamsadhwani can compose in this raga and not make it sound like a classical
piece also in the same raga? Is MM's Madhuvanti of the EXACT (emphasis on exact)
nature as the classical Madhuvanti? Remember it should have no impurities at
all, to meet your criteria.

Hey do you want tunes which have one or two plagarized lines..
like the line `barkha bhi chaaaye baadal bhi chaaye dil phir hi
chalta rahe' from the song `mare gaye' in jaanam (anu malik) is
a copy of i am sixteen ( Sound of music)..

Some more plagarized tunes from my side:

(1) Aao re parwano sagai hai shamma ki ( Dil ke jharoke mein
aaja, Bappi lahiri) is a copy from Paakede Paakede a tamil song
by AR Rehman.

(2) Dil ke jahroke mein aaja ( title song, Bappi Lahiri) is a
copy of Mera dil yeh pukare aaja ( hemant kumar, naagin)

(3) Dekha jo tujhe dil yeh bekaraar ho gaya ( The Don, Dilip
sen- Sameer sen) is a copy of Anu malik's tumsa koyi pyara koi
masoom nahi hai ( Khuddar) which itself is a coy of another song.

(4) Koi nahi ho tere jaisa, koi nahi ho mere jaisa ( Keemat,
dilip sen- sameer sen) is a copy of Cotton eye joe..

(5) Yeh duniya kya chahe Money Money ( Amaanat, bappi) is a copy
of a typical rajasthani folk tune.

(6) Sawli salaoni teri jheel se aankhen ( some movie with kamal
sadanah, bappi lahiri) is a copy of a paki song with almost
similar lyrics too.

(7) TU... ( dulhan bano mein teri, raam laxman) is a copy of
Madonna's Frozen.

(8) Dil le le lena ( Anu malik, auzaar) and dil maa ka dina (
anu malik, dhaal) are copies of Macarena( how do you spell
this??)

(9) Teri husn ki charcha hui gali gali ( some nagarjun - tabu
movie) is a direct copy of Mere sapno ki raani kab aayegi tu (
SDB, Araadhna)

(10) the antara of Batao tum kaun ho ( Anmol, Raam Laxman) is a
copy of the antaras of Yeh sama, sama hai yeh pyar kaa ( Jab
pyar kisi se hota hai( old)?? )

I am having doubts on your sanity and power of reasoning.
You would call an innocent person a thief and then to cover
up your foolhardiness you would say "I accused him because I
was just trying to find out whether he was a thief". Pretty
demented and sick way of finding out who the MD of a song is.
Ignorance, when admitted, is not shameful, but trying to
guise your ignorance under false accusations on others.
- stinks.
