Guru Dutt was a Punjabi. However, he was married to a Bengali
-- her maiden name was Geeta Roy. After marriage, she came
to be known as Geeta Dutt. Geeta Dutt was a famous singer.
She sang many songs in films. Sachin Dev Burman has used
her talent in many films.

I think Guru Dutt's full name was Guru Dutt Shivshankar Padukone. Doesn't sound
like a Punjabi name, does it?

GURUDUTT PADUKONE was originally from the Sirsi area of U.K. (Uttar
Kannada OR North Kanara).
He chose to use only his first name for screen purposes, and thus split
it into Guru Dutt, as we all know him.

It really does not matter anyhow because he was truly a great Indian, and
a film-maker far ahead of his generation.

These are the key words here.

Yes ! He was a great filmmaker.

He was ahead of times. Hence is popular to this day.

My question to net gurus is this :

How popular was in his days ?

How were his movies recieved ?

Was he considered a great moviemaker, able to make sensitive and sensible
movies with very good music ?

Was he at the top, with the best of the times, say like Raj Kapoor ?

Was the music in his very popular, as it should have been ?
