The Pro Arte recording with Eduardo Mata and the Dallas Symphony has more
natural sound - and even louder cannons (!) - than the admittedly fine
Telarc CD with Kunzel. But my favorite has no cannons, no added brass, and
no hype - Fritz Reiner's Chicago Symphony recording on RCA. With brass and
percussion like that, artillery would be superfluous!

The recording I have is of Chicago and Barenboim when he was just
guest-conducting this orchestra. It's on the DG 3D Classics and also has
the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, Bolero, Pavane for a dead
Princess, and Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune. Good sound and really
exciting playing from the Chicago brass section make this 1812 a top
choice in my book.

I agree!

I just got the Deutche Grammophon with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
This is OK, better than the recording I had that was stolen (whatever that
was), but not as good as it should be.

If you don't mind having just the last bit, I really like "TV Classics" on
RCA Victor. This is a great CD; despite the name, this has some great
recordings of real music. The 1812 bit is done by Fritz Reiner and
the Chicago Symphony. I really wish I'd waited for my replacement of this
CD before replacing my 1812.

You might try the Dorati on Mercury 416448-2. It was a hotshot
performance in its LP days (I treasure my LP and have not heard anything
better--performance or sound [no Ormandy chorus, though]). It is coupled
(or multipled?) with Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, and Tchaikovsky's
Marche Slav and Romeo and Juliet. I don't know how well CDs have
remastered that superb live sound from Mercury, but I just talked myself
into going after one at the local Tower (to play on my CD-rom drive on my
computer to energize me while I work on stuff I couldn't get done at the
office).

i like the choral version of the 1812 Overture.
If i did not remember wrongly, there is one recording with the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Opera Choir.

I've said this before. Chicagi Symphony Orchestra/Daniel Barenboim on
DG 3D Classics. Very loud sound and a very powerful performance to
boot. Yes the Telarc can break speakers, but the music-making isn't
always of the highest order. The performance here just rocks. You won't
hear louder brass anywhere else or such neat sounding cannon.

Checking out recordings by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra
(with Charles Dutoit) is always a safe bet, in my humble CANADIAN
opinion. They put out a great "Planets" recording several years ago.
