Starting on July 11th, I've tried several times to post this from my home
account but it doesn't seem to get out of the local server. Thus, I'm
trying again from my work account (I'm soon to lose).

===========================================================================

1) On Friday, July 7, I talked with Verve Records pubilicity department
in NYC. JM's latest album _After the Rain_ will finally be released in
the USA on July 8th (it was released late March or early April in Europe
and a few weeks ago in Canada - don't know about Japan). I was also
told JM will not perform live in the USA again until 1996. Patience is
a virtue...

2) A friend sent me a photocopy of page 25 of the June 1995 issue of
_Guitar Player_. It has a brief note that reads in its entirety:

"...STOP THE PRESSES: Rumour has it that pivotal guitar genius Jeff Beck
will appear on an upcoming album by pivotal guitar genius John McLaughlin.
We'll try to sit still in the meantime...."

Well, maybe they can sit still but I doubt that I can!

3) The July 1995 issue (#100) of _ICE_ reports RCA will release in October
an album of Jimi Hendrix songs performed by some of today's best guitarists
with accompaniment by the London Metropolitan Orchestra (Metropolitan?).
Album title: _In from the Storm_. JM is featured on only one track, "The
Wind Cries Mary" with Sting. Other participants include (in various
combinations): Tony Williams, Stanley Clarke, Carlos Santana, Robben Ford,
Steve Vai, Hiram Bullock, Steve Lukather, Brian May, Noel Redding, Billy
Cox, Buddy Miles, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Everette Harp, Cozy
Powell, etc.

Life without music would be a mistake. Enjoy!

Puzzlement. I thought that was the Terje Rypdal (mid-70s) album; at
least CDEurope's catalogue listed TR's "After The Rain" as a Verve
release. A few seconds ago, here's what CD-Europe's search engine found
for Rypdal:

B185859 RYPDAL TERJE AFTER THE RAIN
$26.95 ECM 6/95

B226772 RYPDAL TERJE AFTER THE RAIN
$29.95 ECM 6/95 HOLLAND

H293783 RYPDAL TERJE AFTER THE RAIN
$27.95 VERVE 6/95 GERMANY

However, a search on the title shows that there are *many* albums of
that name, by Harold Danko, Michael Jones, "Mie" Kitabatake, Michel
Legrand, Nelson, Red Dog, TR, Jack Tempkin and Seclusion, oh and yes,
John McLaughlin:

H289156 MCLAUGHLIN JOHN AFTER THE RAIN
$27.95 5/95 GERMANY

B310571 MCLAUGHLIN JOHN AFTER THE RAIN
$28.95 POLYG 5/95

B398446 MCLAUGHLIN JOHN AFTER THE RAIN
$22.95 VERVE 5/95 HOLLAND

Could cause some confusion, Bruce!

And they haven't even listed Coltrane... nor Barry Guy's CD-EP...

In any case, Terje's AtR *is* being released on CD in the UK this week.
(For considerably less than $26.95! My copy will cost UKP 13.49, when it
finally arrives - circa $21; maybe not that much less than I'd've liked,
but heck, I'm impatient to get it!)

Love to receive JM news. Thanks a lot. The playing with Sting is one of
the things I have been waiting for over the years as I have read many
times how much Sting admires McLaughlin.

Are you sure about two other facts? The new JM album certainly has
not been released in USA. (And it is July 18 as I write this). It is not
even listed as an upcoming release. I was told through other pretty good
sources that it won't be released until September. (It is currently
available in Canada and I have purchased it through the mail).

Secondly, on the tour, and the source is from a band member, plans
are currently under way for a tour. You may very well be right that the
tour is planned for next year..but I hope not!

Thanks for your great info..

Still haven't seen _After the Rain_ in U.S. I also understand JM hates

Jeff's touring with Santana this summer. Imagine if all three got
together...

..no, I'm better off not contemplating the glory of such a collaboration.

Can't imagine John saying that, though I *have* seen some over-
enthusiastic audiences.

My wife and I saw him at a big club here in NYC. Standing room only
on a big dance floor. About 10 feet away an empty circle started
widening...Two guys--drunk on their asses--thought they were at a
Motley Crue concert. No, they were just *serious* McLaughlin fans!
My wife and I were in stitches as they screamed 'BOOOOOGGGIIEE'!
after every tune. John stared from the stage in disbelief.

Anyway, we're close friends with John's ex-chief-eng from Mahavishnu
and he just roared when we told him about it. We all decided to go to
see John at a little club in NJ a while later. Imagine--they sat
us in the front row with two very familiar looking gents!

My wife and I could barely contain ourselves...just waiting for the
first chorus of "GEEETTT ITTT JOHHHNNN!" (heehee). The management
finally had to intervene. John seemed to think it quite humorous,
I believe.

>>"...STOP THE PRESSES: Rumour has it that pivotal guitar genius Jeff Beck

I'm curious to hear this. Jeff's had trouble with his hearing, so
hopefully all's well again. I once asked JM about his favorite
electric guitarists. I was fully expecting maybe 'Allan Holdsworth'
or someone in a more jazz-oriented vein.. Maybe it was the moment,
but 'Jeff Beck' was the reply. I've wondered if in part it was the
tour that the Mahavishnu Orch. did with Beck.

Hard to pin down chemistry. I didn't think that the first McLaughlin/
Santana album worked very well. Second time around, maybe.

Great stories and insight regarding over- zealous fans.

In about 1982, at the Bushnell Auditorium in Hartford, Ct I saw JM with
the Belo Horizonte band. (Always loved that band)! At any rate, if you
remember, this was an acoustic band. There were plenty of quiet
moments...however, among the adoring fans was an obnoxious S.O.B. who kept
screaming out at the top of his lungs unintelligible rantings which in his
obvious drug-induced state were apparently meant to be Sri Chinmoy
aphorisms of praise!

At any rate, it was maddening and went on for at least a half hour with
nobody knowing what to do- including JM who just smiled in the direction
of the sounds coming from the darkness. Finally, and I remember it so
vividly, a fellow front-rower stood-up turned and yelled in the direction
of our friend and said "Hey, listen you asshole. Show some respect for
the crowd and the artist. We are here to enjoy the music" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With this, the crowd erupted into applause. The asshole never did open
his mouth again and JM played on.

I am extremely jealous of anyone who has spoken with JM. Thanks for
the story.

This is an interesting "tidbit." I saw Beck and McLaughlin in Dallas
circa 1975 (I saw so many concerts in the 70's I can't remember the
dates--anyone care to speculate as to why?). It was around the time
Beck released WIRED. I think McLaughlin opened. Anyway, at some
point in the show both were on stage for perhaps 30 - 45 minutes.
Now THAT was something to behold....

There are many extraordinary guitarists so it's difficult to say who's
"best" or "fastest" or "most talented." But by anyone's standard,
McLaughlin ranks among the best. I recall (don't still have the
album) listening to "Between Nothingness and Eternity" and being
amazed at how fast and crisp JM played. Some "fast" guitarists move
the pick faster than their fingers and end up with a somewhat "muddy"
sound. JM leaves 'em in the dust.

As an aside, I was listening to an old James Taylor album, "One Man
Dog," which contains a cut written by McLaughlin titled "Someone." JM
plays acoustic - and if you didn't know it was him, you'd think JT is
somewhat "underrated." <g>

TANSTAAFL!

I liked Love Devotion Surrender but did think it was a different album
than either would have done separately. So Mahavishnu fans didn't get
a new Mahavishnu record, and Santana fans didn't get a new Santana
record. Most, if not all, of the people I knew back when it was
released did dig it, however.

Some months back, I picked up John McLaughlin/Carlos Santana Recorded
Live in Chicago 1974 on Jazz Door JD 1250 with Larry Young-org, Doug
Rauch-b, Armando Peraza-perc, and Billy Cobham-d. The tracks are Flame
Sky (20:04), Naima (15:46), The Live (sic) Divine (20:08), and A Love
Supreme (19:30). The minimal liner notes are in German, and the
recording is more or less bootleg quality. Musically, though, the
performance is top-notch and recommended for anyone who like LDS.

That would make sense, since it _is_ a bootleg. :)

Definitely worth a listen if you're into these guys.

Regarding overzealous fans:

I saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra "Apocalypse" tour back in '74. The show
opened with the band standing on stage for about a minute of silence
before the music commenced. Unfortunately, the minute was filled by the
sounds of the fellow standing next to me, who was screaming something
along the lines of "Hey Johnny McLaughlin, we got your records at home!
Let's rock buddy! Parrrty!" He then began to puke, spewing forth vomit
on everyone in his immediate area. I got it in the leg. Then he passed
out.
Michael Walden then hit the gong, and the music began.
So McLaughlin has had to deal with these problems for at least 20 years.
Is it something in his music that brings out the rowdies? I've never been
puked on at a rock concert...

During the Bush administration, Dan Quayle paid a visit to
Portland, OR, where I happened to be visiting friends. Some
of the local citizenry were rather exercised about these
"official state visits" because the taxpayers in Portland
were footing the cost for the losers' fund-raising and politicking
therein.

So as Danny-Boy stepped out of his limo and proceeded down the
red carpet, one group of protesters downed bottles of Epicac
(a powerful emetic) that they had earlier mixed with red, white,
and blue food coloring. As Danny passed in front of them, they
puked Uncle Sam's favorite colors all over the street. I was
vey impressed, to say the least, and for a time considered
relocating to Portland. Unfortunately, they hate people from
California even more than they hated bush/quayle, so I
squelched that idea.

Based on what I've seen elsewhere, are you sure this is not a typo and
really they meant August 8? (I have not seen it locally.) Just so
people don't go looking for something that does not exist. Of course, if
Verve told you July 8, then they meant July 8.

re: overzealous fans.

At the Mcl., Delucia, DiMeola concert at Carnegie Hall, an intensely
annoying dude , obviously with pharmaceutical aid, kept yelling out
'SPACE ROCKERS!!!!' whenever a fast lick was played. As you can imagine,
this was quite often. This was fifth row center, mind you, with Al D's
parents sitting right behind. I'm surprised they didn't bonk the guy
over the head.

btw, I did get to talk to McLaughlin very briefly, after he played this
Mediterranean Concerto in Michigan. I asked him what the deal was with
getting Shakti released on CD; he said, with some regret, that he didn't
own the tapes and that it was entirely up to the record company.

Yes, *Where* is it? I've been waiting for ever now. What's the deal here?
Every country ion the world except the U.S. now has the album? Inexplicable
and very frustrating. Could this mean that this *shit* (pardon me) is also
happening with all kinds of other albums that I would probably love to hear
but never even hear _of_ because they aren't released in the U.S.? How was that

I don't have the start of this thread, but if the new album is
After The Rain on Verve, then I heard it today. John Mclaughlin,
Elvin Jones, and Joey DeFrancesco. About half the tracks are
tunes that Trane did.

If this isn't the album you're talkin' about, then, nevermind. :-)
