Here it is, the battle of the bands for groups that did their music
thing at least somewhere in the 60's. I am sure there are lots
missing, and for it to be a 'battle', I tried pitting a group that
would at least have some sort of similarity between the other. That
might be stretching it. The idea is to either vote, give a rating, or
make a comment about the 'battle'. Of course if you don't like the
selections, you can add yer own, and tell how bad the selections are
too...:). On rating, we did a 0 -10 last year, and that of course can
include, likes, influence, talent, poetry..etc. etc. Have fun, and
good luck.

1. The Beatles vs. The Beach Boys
2. The Blues Magoos vs. 13th Floor Elevators
3. Climax Blues Band vs. The Seeds

46. The Grassroots vs. The Association
47. The Coasters vs. The Pharoahs
48. The Kingston Trio vs. Peter, Paul, and Mary
49. The Temptations vs. The Four Tops

Obviously I left out single artists like James Brown, Bob Dylan,
Donavan and Neil Diamond even though they surely had bands, but they
weren't noted for them, and made it for those that had 2 and above.
So here they are, even though I should sit here and even this out to
50. This is somewhat of a scramble from last year's pittings and I am
sure a few groups were added.

The worst is Led Zeppelin vs Who. It should be Who vs Kinks (both are
part of the Mod culture). The Who is much older then Zep and part of
British Invasion. Led Zeppelin is not part of Brit Invasion.

The real battle should be

The Beatles vs The Beach Boys (both pop/rock)

The Rolling Stones vs The Animals (rock n roll/blues rock)

The Byrds vs The Yardbirds (psychedelic rock/rock n roll)

The Who vs The Kinks (mod rock/power pop)

Led Zeppelin vs Black Sabbath (hard rock/metal)

Yes vs Deep Purple (progressive hard rock?)

Pink Floyd vs Doors (psychedelic rock)

Jimi Hendrix Experience vs Cream (power trios)

Santana. Sons of Champlin did Chicago better than Chicago, and did it

Sly in the long run. The Time Has Come album by the Chambers Brothers

It's hard to match up especially when I did it last year and wanted to
switch a lot. In rec.music.60's, they decided to give their scores as
2-8, 1-9, 6-4..etc. That was new and I kinda liked it. To LOL, I
thought the Who, Zep is good because of their unique abilities to use
the power chords to pizzazz a lot of their music. Most had a hard
time with that one. I had a hard time on a lot, and had to pass on
some...as I should have bought more albums...:).

As with the first choice, they both did great music, but the Beatles and the
Blues Magoos were just more fun.
(and I have to go with the hometown team.)

I dislike everything Janis Joplin did after them, but I'll go with Big
Brother anyway. especially for the Mainstream album. Yes, it was borderline
inept, but since when is that a bad thing in rock and roll? And how many
borderline inept bands were doing Moondog covers in 67?

Tough call. The Byrds made more great records, they had better harmonies and
they had a more distinctive sound, but Sebastain was a better songwriter
than any of The Byrds, they were probably a better band instrumentally and,
as with my first two choices, they were more fun, so I'll go with The
Spoonful. Besides, they were another hometown team, and how can anyone vote
against Zal?

Sam the Sham and The Pharoahs. I think you're the only one who picked
Chad and Jeremy in all the music groups. You probably know much
more. I only disagreed with few of your picks and thanx for the good
imput.

It's not really a competition as I don't pick any winners. It's as
far as I go..:). I did it last year in rec.music.60's and it got a
lot of responses...like between 4 and 5 hundred. Mostly childish
insults..:). So I wasn't trying to axe the Beach Boys by putting them
with the Beatles. I think I got like a 100 responses last year when I
suggested a tie between the Animals and Kinks. Won't pair them
together no mo'..:).

Now if you want to make it a competetion...I hand over my 'rights' and

For what it's worth, I picked C & J as well (see my post early in this
thread), mainly for the reason that BlackMonk mentioned but also because
they managed to make it on their own, in contrast with P & G who got a
*huge* boost from Paul McCartney.

p.s...Has anyone noticed?

This thread hasn't degenerated into a flame war! (At least not yet,
though perhaps I write prematurely....)

Consider (a) the subject matter and (b) which people are no longer
posting to RMB who had vast potential for turning it into one.

Draw your own conclusions.

But who gets paired with Sandie Shaw, then? Or were Evie Sands and
Sandie Shaw actually the same act, like Peter and Gordon and Chad and

Yup, you passed. Some even think this is a first round thing and the
contest will go on and on...so you have a big plus there, and another
big plus is you are the only one if I am not mistaken that chose the
Animals over the Stones. I gave them a tie even though I like
listening to Animals better. I think you were the only Kingston Trio
picker and I thought they were a much better match up for PP&M than
the surveyers gave them credit. You would have got an A+ if you had
picked the Shondells over the Rascals, however..:).

I always thought of Wayne Newtwon and Eddie Hodges as the same person,

I wouldn't go that far. She was a competent singer and her vocals could have
some charm, but there's no reason why she should be in a group with two
great vocalists and a great songwriter. (Except for the obvious one, which I
shouldn't mention in a family newsgroup)

She wasn't in The Seekers. The connection was that Tom Springfield wrote

"Since I Don't Have You" "This I Swear" probably a couple others that sound

Why "amazing".

She's just released a version of the Australian National Anthem with words that are less 18th
Century and less offensive to the original owners of Australia.

And, I bumped into her in the street a couple of years ago... which startled me!

I don't recall a Seekers song called "The Mutant". Than again, I'm only

She meant (I daresay) "I used to sing to The Mutant [her son]". The "to"
was lost in transmission.

I never sang to my sons, having no voice to speak of, but I played them
numberous Beatles songs from their birth. They loved "The Oww Song",
otherwise known as "Thank You, Girl".

You distinctly remind me of a 'counselor' that we had at a church-
sponsored youth camp that my folks desperate tried to lose me at one
summer. Didn't work. I escaped and fled to a commune in the North of
Texas. She constantly tried to do idiotic things such as this. Always
trying to deal out comparison games like this. That or she’d have us
all holding hands on the dock singing Kumba Ya or A Hard Rain’s Gonna
Fall or some other pro-peace yarn. I of-times wander what became of
her. She was 23 and I was but 17. Sure was a good lay.
