Put it all on one page, goddamit!

Right of the bat, "The September of My Years" ought to replace number
one.

And you mean we all shouldn't have "Hey Jude"?

Jacquelyn Mitchard can eat my shorts, Fromunda included.

I own nine, and of the remaining seven, I've only HEARD OF two.
Of course, AARP doesn't really know a damned thing about adult culture
unless it leads directly to selling more insurance.

p.s. there IS Beatles-related content in the list.

they could have listed them instead of making us click 15 times. I

There's a link on the site where you can view them all on one page.

I only posted for reaction...I found them to be mostly horrible...who
the heck is this person who wrote the column anyway.

Even the Vatican made more sense when they chose their greatest albums

She's a fairly well-known author. I don't know why everybody is so
hostile to this list...it's one person's opinion. AARP didn't say
everybody over 50 should own these songs. And the person who wrote the
column is not the same person who compiled their list.

It's a headline - it's obviously not meant to be read as THE
definitive list. The article invites and encourages readers - at least
twice - to submit their own ideas for a "better list". If I started a
thread here called "The 10 Best Beatles Songs" and gave my list and
then asked for other people to submit their own list, would you say
"who the hell is this guy to think he knows the 10 Best Beatle Songs",
or would you make your own list? I still don't get the hostility to
this article from this group.

I get it. The list seems thoughtless and arbitrary. The blurbs for each
song are shallow. I don't get the feeling that the author really likes
or knows the music well. And the article is riddled with mistakes. He
calls "Harvest Moon" a waltz, which it's not. The Buffalo Springfield
song is not titled, "Stop, Hey Whats That Sound", etc. The Coolio and
Eagles and ACDC songs seem like tokens.

I guess it being an intentional "conversation starter" makes it
slightly more OK, but it still seems so careless.

Abe, I know they didn't mean the list to be the ultimate, but thought
you had missed the title with the word "must" in it.

I'm not hostile to the article. I get their regular monthly magazine,
and it is quite good at times.

I just put the article out there for comment.

now that I've seen the whole list (thank you, Tony, for pointing out
the link to see all of it at once) I'm not hostile at all to it. Not
really my taste but that's ok. No reason it *should* be. It's always
interesting to see what somebody else likes. If I were going to put
one together that was mildly eclectic I might have Mos Def, along with
the Zombies. My list, like Ms. Mitchard's would be "a list by someone
who has some favorites".

Just for fun, I've listed below the "40 Songs People Over 55 MUST
Own".

They are not listed in any particular order, and I could probably list
another 25 or so. And yes, the songs are specific to folks who grew
up during the 60s and early 70s. Not to be taken too seriously, just
listed for fun like the AARP list.

She Loves You--Beatles
In The Still Of The Night--Five Satins
Like A Rolling Stone--Dylan
Layla--Derek & The Dominoes
When A Man Loves A Woman--Percy Sledge
Alice's Restaurant--Arlo Guthrie
Hey Jude--Beatles
Good Lovin'--Young Rascals
My Girl--Temptations
Imagine--Lennon
Can't Get Enough--Bad Company
What's Goin On--Marvin Gaye
Woodstock--Joni Mitchell
Good Vibrations--Beach Boys
I Got You (I Feel Good)--James Brown
I Ain't Marchin Anymore--Phil Ochs
Ticket To Ride--Beatles
SaveThe Country--Laura Nyro
My Girl--Temptations
Ready Teddy--Little Richard
God Only Knows--Beach Boys
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction--Stones
Stairway To Heaven--Led Zeppelin
Light My Fire--Doors
My Sweet Lord--Harrison
My Generation--Who
Somebody To Love--Jefferson Airplane
Hound Dog--Elvis
Brown Sugar--Stones
Papa Was A Rolling Stone--Temptations
That'll Be The Day--Buddy Holly

Yes, I agree. I weighted the list more towards 60s songs, but there
are many 50s rock songs that are essential.

ages 15 to 25 must own of 60's music? Make it 16 songs or 50
