Which artist or album, in your opinion,
is ambient music's best kept secret?

Seriously -- I think Alio Die is incredibly underrated, as is some of the stuff
on Manifold (Sian, Totemplow) and some of the Hypnos stuff. Heck, the whole
_genre_ is often underrated, but it occurs to me that this is ok. After all,
wallpaper is underrated ... but it's sort of supposed to be.

I would also put a plug in here for an underground artist named Stephen
Phillips. He's put out some really sinuous ambient stuff that I would have
to liken to early SETI. He's a part of the Independent Electronic Musician
Collective, whose website is

Take your pick. Lots of artists who are more Eno-esque and less
beat-oriented are underappreciated, including (but not limited to) the
following:
Aqueous (especially their recent release ENTERTAINING ANGELS)
Lots of the releases from Michael Bentley's label, The Foundry
James Johnson (his new CD, SURRENDER, is killer Eno-esque stuff)
Larry Kucharz (practically everything he does)
Richard Bone (THE SPECTRAL SHIPS and others)
A Produce (take your pick of everything he does...it's all great)
Jeff Pearce (VESTIGES, THE HIDDEN RIFT)
Robert Scott Thompson (FRONTIER and others...always recommended)
Stephen Bacchus' AMBIENT ORIGINS
Anything from the Hypnos label (it's all great)
Mark Rownd (esp. PAINTING TWILIGHT)
The new one from Jon Jenkins (FLOW)
Spacecraft (HUMMEL is excellent)
And this is only the proverbial tip o' the iceberg, IMO.
Just my $0.02 and your mileage can and should vary.

Zoviet france , in my opinion the most underrated band ever in the
ambient scene . A ton of artists owe their entire career to ZF . they
virtually invented the ambient texture soundscape genre. Required
listening includes - "Digilogue" , "Shouting at the ground ", "a Flock
of rotations" , " Look into me " , and "shadow , thief of the sun " .
Hafler trio , to my knowledge invented dark droney ambient . A lot of
their stuff is mainly just human vocal sounds . "A thirsty fish" is
some very good material. he has his own web page somewhere , but I
don't know the address. can someone help me out ?
Aube , a guy who made a a violent turn towards the ambient side in
almost all of his recent works . Some albums to check out are "Aqua
Syndrome " , "metal de metal " , and " Cardiac Strain " . He only uses
the sources of natural elements in all of his works. go to
www.manifold.com for information
fluorescent grey , I don't know how much ambient this guy does but of
what I've heard it's really good . some of the tracks are so textured
you can almost touch them . try Untitled , released some time in 97. try
www.ovenguard.com for information. he also has his own webpage , does
anyone know the address ?
hands to , a very very underrated group who I never hear any talk about
. They use primarily analogue dictators to do field recordings and turn
them into large , drifting ,unique soundscapes . A lot of their
material is hard to find though . All albums recommended
nurse with wound , a lot of the stuff they put out is genius while
staying on the ambient side. Try "rock and roll station" or if you have
the extra bucks buy "second pirate session" instead " which is rock and
roll station + extra tracks . Also might want to check out " soliloquy
for the lilith " which has been discussed on here before . go to
www.brainwashed.com for sound clips and info
coil , Worship the glitch one of my favorite ambient albums ever is
worth checking out . It's title reflects the concept of the album where
only equipment glitches were used to record the album . Any of the new
solstice cds and 7 "'s are very ambient and good too ( plus they are
cheap ) . go to www.brainwashed.com also for sound clips and an
official coil page
I hope you check some of this stuff out , it will be worth your while .

Another artist who is not really 'ambient' but does wonderful dark
soundscapes is Tactile. Very hypnotic pulses and and low-end sweeps.
Insane!

Hmm, I wonder if I will get massively popular by
starting a band called, uh, Aantti?
Note: this is humour.

Insane? hrm, I dunno... but the remix album (recurrence and intervention -
zoviet france, coil, scorn, eyeless in gaza, mika vainio, james plotkin,
etc...) is a masterpiece.

Really? Ya think so? He seems to be getting a lot of attention these days...
I mean, just look at how many labels are releasing his material now. I can
barely keep up with him anymore! :)
What do you think of his new 5000 Spirits disc?
i think 'reasons to sway', by sketch, has been criminally neglected.

As far as scorn goes.... really don't care for him.

I can barely keep up with this NG anymore, as evidently Alio Die has released
tons o'stuff that i'm not aware of :-)

:-)
OK, how about:
Taylor Deupree (someone else mentioned HMD and I agree -- I only have Secret
#12, but it's beautiful)
Sian -- Aube and (I hate saying this) some other guy. Sink / Assign on
Manifold is great!
A Produce
Terre Thaemlitz (though he's getting more attention, with the Wire cover and
Modulations and all, I _love_ Soil)
That Summer (not really ambient, but it's very cool stuff)
Life Garden (definitely some of the best dark ambient i've ever heard, and _so_
hard to find)
Main
Some of the Hypnos stuff (Viridian Sun, Jeff Pearce, Saul Stokes)
Oh yeah, my band! :-)

Anyone care to expand on this one? Life Garden is totally new to me. Any
sound files available?
Thanks!

Thanks for the info. Its a great sound file. Ill have to buy your comps.
when i get some cash.
Ecellent website too. Visually impressive and easy to navigate.
Take care.

It's really good stuff ... I wish I could get more of it. Their web site seems
rather dormant (still there, but unchanging). I've no idea where to get more
of their stuff (actually, they is mostly David Oliphant I think) ...
Regards,
You know of his new 5000 Spirits disc (on Crowd Control Activities), right? He
also has two collaborative releases on the Crowd Control Activities label and
the Amplexus label... and another solo disc... which label it is, I forget...
oh, and a 7" and drone! Like I said, a whole bunch o' stuff!
> Sian -- Aube and (I hate saying this) some other guy. Sink / Assign on

Yeah, the Sian on Manifold is groovy... so is the split with David Kristian.
Actually, I like the split disc a little more...
> A Produce
I've only heard Inscape and Landscape but I like it quite bit... which one
would you say is his best?

Soil rocks.

www.anomalousrecords.com usually carries some of their stuff.

nah, they're too well known to be underrated...
> Some of the Hypnos stuff (Viridian Sun, Jeff Pearce, Saul Stokes)
I like the Viridian Sun a lot... Just got a Saul Stokes disc from a friend of
mine but I haven't listened to it yet...
Like Garden is a sort of organic ambience... The guy from Life Garden used to
be in an experimental industrial group called Maybe Mental. He also did a
couple of collaborations with Voice of Eye (Voice Of Eye is really nice as
well). www.anomalousrecords.com usually has some life garden

All-organic sound warpage -- "performed on a wide variety of 'folk' and
moden instruments including various flutes, chanters, reed instruments,
hand drums, tom drums, metal percussion, gongs, bells, string instruments,
violin, sitar, bowed zither, shos, D-4 drum module, various multi-effect
units, mirage sampler" -- and the abstract vocal stylings of Su Ling.
They're great, but their stuff is perversely hard to find ... they run
their own label, Agni Music (ag...@pcslink.com) out of Phoenix AZ.
Life Garden is quite similar stylistically to Voice of Eye, who I may like
even better ... they're on Cyclotron Industries out of Houston TX. They
don't use any synthesizers, and often make their own instruments. I
strongly recommend _Vespers_, and their track on Manifold's "Narratives:
Music For Fiction" comp is spectacular.
I've never seen sound files for either of these bands ... but if you want
to check out Life Garden, along with a bunch of other artists mentioned on
this thread, why not pick up Ad Astra's nifty _Voyager_ compilation? =)
Anyway, to add to the underrated stuff list:
Locust
Not Breathing (not always ambient, but his ambient stuff is great)
Woob
Vidna Obmana
glad to see Sketch mentioned ... I also thought _Reason_To_Sway_ was a classic
as is Miasma's album on Emit
two other discs Apollo released around that time were especially good, too,
namely: Tournesol _Kokotsu_ and Uzect Plaush _More_Beautiful_Human_Life!_
all-time best chill-out records: Sun Electric _Live_ and MLO's _Io_ soundtrack

===============================================================
Let me throw in a thing or two about Voice Of Eye...
Using the term loosely, they are also an "organic ambient"
group, and a *great* one at that. The instrumentation used
on their 3 CD outings, 2 CD collaborations with Lifegarden,
several compilation appearances with the likes of Robert Rich,
Paul Schütze, Steve Roach, Jeff Greinke, Vidna Obmana, etc...
have always been without the use of ANY synthesisers or
samplers, instead utilising homemade devices, some electric
guitar/bass, and heavy reliance on the studio environment.
If Voice Of Eye's music sounds interesting and you don't
have any of their CDs, now is the time to get'em, because
they are all out of print and getting increasingly hard to
track down!
Here's more Voice Of Eye info at:
