Is there a difference between 7.62x54 and 7.6254R calibers? May they
be used interchangeably? Would appreciate some knowledgeable advice.

To the best of my knowledge there is only one 7.62 x 54mm and that's
the Russian round. I've seen it refered to as the 7.62 x 54 and the
7.62 x 54R. They are the same cartridge.

Dear Joe:

There is no difference. The Russian 7.62x54R cartridge is rimmed even if the
"R" is left off the designation.

The Russian service rifle round has always been rimmed - there is no rimless
version. FB, Denver

The "R" stands for a rimmed version of the cartridge. It would probably
be used in a double rifle or drilling. The non-rimmed version would be
used in a rifle with a magazine for better feeding, capacity, etc.

True in most African hunting rifles, but in this case it's about the
Russian military round, which is, oddly enough, rimmed.

The difference is that the 7,62x54R is rimmed, while 7,62x54 is
rimless :-)
