Just got around to finally opening up what I believed to be a dead
32X(thanks again, so very much, Bent!!!!) and found one of the sets of
wires hanging WAY out of the connection. Plugged it in, slapped it on
the Genesis, and miraculously it worked!!! MK2!!!!! YES! One thing
though, like, everything has a green tint to it. When you turn it on
with no game, the Sega CD menu is COMPLETELY green. Anyone have any
ideas of where else on the 32X I could look for wires being messed up or
anything?
Thanks in advance,
Bel

I've had this problem before with my 32x connection. Turned my Sega CD
on one day and everything had this strange green tint to it. Powered
down and back up, same thing. Ended up unplugging every connection
(Genesis, 32x, SCD) and reconnecting and everything worked fine. I have
no idea what would cause it.

Good call! I just went back in there, unhooked everything then rehooked it
all in. Still had the green, but started messing with the "Genesis 1
conversion cable". Sort of bent it back and forth, and there it was,
color(other than green)!!! Solid!!!! I must have played MK2 for at least an
hour solid, then I finally got to play Virtua Racing Deluxe(bought it, never
got a chance to play it). I even played Doom for a bit. Man, what the hell is
that running at? 320 X something? It's hard to believe that when I had my
first 32X, before it died, I used to play Doom EVERY damn day. I used to
think it was actually graphically impressive too. Of course, this is before I
had the Centris, and WAY before I had the iMac...;)
Kind of sucks, I used to have Shadow Squadron, now I don't know where it
is!!! Other than that, I really don't know what else is pretty good on 32X.
The only games I have ever played are MK2, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Doom, Space
Harrier and some space fighting game with lots of scaling(it was really bad).
Cosmic Fight maybe? I don't know...
At any rate, what does anyone think of the following:
Metal Head
SpiderMan: Web of Fire
Knuckles Chaotix
Supercross Motorbike Racing(I think that's what it's called)
Star Wars Arcade
Kolobri
Also, other than the ones above, what are some decent 32X games?
Bel, who is finally somewhat happy. Not only does he get to play MK2, but
Double Dragon actually works via the 32X...
If you want to buy another, you can get it new at Flashback Video Games
(www.flashbackinc.com) for $12.95. They have several of the other games you
mention below at the same price, and they're great to deal with.

Of those all I've played is Chaotix. I think it's decent, though the
gratuitous over-use of scaling annoyed me a lot (when you switch between
some characters it does this stupid scaling "cinema" that gets annoying
after you see it a few times). Just don't expect it to be a Sonic game,
because while it looks a lot like one it plays quite differently; not
necessarily better or worse, just different.
Kolibri seems like an interesting shooter but I never got to play it.
> Also, other than the ones above, what are some decent 32X games?
Perhaps Tempo. A bit hard for me to judge as I played the Japanese Saturn's
"Super Tempo" first and I didn't like the different play mechanics of the
32X game as much as the Saturn game. Besides, where else can you hear "rap"
from a cartridge game? ;)

Sometimes mine gets set wrong in the Genesis cartridge slot too, and
wiggling it fixes the problem. No idea how bad that is for the systems.
Heh.

Cosmic Carnage, flawed but underrated game. Extremely difficult, and
fairly diverse thanks to the armor->special move system.

Decent Mech shooter with crappy explosions and a low framerate. Nice
texturework for the time.

Sucks, but don't tell that to the fools payin $90+ for it because it's
*rare* on e-bay. I'm glad I got rid of mine.
> Knuckles Chaotix
Revamped 32X version of a Sonic 5 beta rom floating around the Internet
called Sonic Crackers. They turned Sonic into Mighty the Armadillo. Decent
graphics, boring level design, interesting gameplay concept requiring
interaction with another character at all times. Biggest last boss fight of
all the 2D Sonics. (Full screen red mecha sonic in a Mario World Bowser
style scaling and rotation special effects fest).
> Supercross Motorbike Racing(I think that's what it's called)
Decent texture work for the system. Not bad gameplay, somewhat similar to
Enduro Racer on the old SMS.
> Star Wars Arcade
Worst and most popular game on the system. Crappy graphics, crappy midi
music, crappy gameplay, low framerate, low resolution, no texture work (not
necessarily a bad thing). Get Shadow Squadron again, it's what this game
should have been.
> Kolobri
Dunno, can't get a hold of one for a reasonable price.
> Also, other than the ones above, what are some decent 32X games?
After Burner, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, Shadow Squadron, Virtua
Figher, NBA JAM, MK2, Knuckles Chaotix, Blackthorne, Cosmic Carnage. That's
about all I can think of off the top of my head that contains anything
memorable. Check out http://eidolon.psp.net/

What? You don't feel ripped off and taken by Sega? Hmm..... you should
read more mass media mags, they'll set you straight about how much the 32X
sucks. Heheh.

As another poster said, this has an absolutely horrid framerate. This
really affects you after experiencing some of the eye candy we have
nowadays. Its got some interesting missions and some other cool stuff
about it, you just have to get past the slow ass pace of the game to
enjoy it.
I especially liked the mission where you chased an army jeep around the
city.
> Supercross Motorbike Racing(I think that's what it's called)
Motocross Championship
This is one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. Its one of
the few games I truly regret buying. I can't believe I paid 40 bucks for
this turd. Stay far, far away.
> Also, other than the ones above, what are some decent 32X games?
Afterburner 2 was pretty good. I also read that both the Sega baseball
game (World Series Baseball?) and the Acclaim Quarterback Club game were
really good.
-P.O
Actually, I'm making fun of all the people out there that believe they
were ripped off by Sega because of the 32X. Especially all the ones that
never actually bought a 32X, but read about it somewhere as sucking.
As far as SA2 goes, I don't care if people don't like it. I can see
lots of reasons why people wouldn't like the game. It being extremely
difficult to rank well being the best reason. I just don't get why people
try to run backwards in the levels and call it a camera problem when it
swings back around to point you in the right direction.
Oh, and who the hell are you? Try to stick to one screen name and maybe I'd
care.

Ack, sorry, looks like you're not a troll. You're tone had me fooled,
what with all the name changing trolls we've got now days.
As for my name changes they're mostly due to windows crashes, change of cpu
and lazyness on my part. I didn't try to fool anyone. Btw don't tell me

there. Some that you mentioned, I didn't even realize were out.

Well, had I have bought it when it was $150, perhaps. I have had three, the
first was $20 new at Toys R Us: It broke soon enough. The second was $15 at a
pawn shop: It never worked very well. The third was given to me(along with the
gloriously low res Doom): It works fine.

SHHHHHHHH!!!!! Raymond, you're killing me here! Keep it on the "qt" until I
get it ordered! ;)
Seriously though, I just ordered it a bit ago, thanks for the info! My only
problem with Flashback are the outrageous shipping charges. $6 to ship me SS!
Now, for this game, it's worth it, but still....

Heheheheh, sounds good to me. Another on the list...
I went out today looking for SS, but had no luck. I did manage to find some
badass deals though. Picked up:
NBA Jam: TE for 32X for $4 - Not too bad, but other than the scaling
characters does anyone see any real differences between this and the regular
Genesis version?
*Hardcore-I-cannot-believe-it-deal-of-the-day* Picked up both Genghis Kahn II
and Romance of the Three Kingdoms III COMPLETE! Box, cart, manual and map: all
of it! I about passed out when I saw them. $4.99 and $14.99 respectively.
Got a few random Genesis games: Hit the Ice($1.99), Soldiers of Fortune($4.90)
and James Pond 2($1.99). Actually, these were free since Gamestop was having a
buy two get one free sale.
Then, and this is absolutely hilarious, I found this game(new, still in
shrinkwrap) called "Funny World & Balloon Boy". It's a non-licensed, 2 in 1
cart. The game is a SQUARE; not like the regular Genesis games. The manual is
a double sided fold out pamphlet with mediocre character drawings on it. I
cannot get the game to start though! You put it in, you get the "Realtec"
screen, then the choice of games, hit start and it takes you back to the
"Realtec" screen. I guess trying to get the motherfucker to work is half the
fun...;)
Oh, and the real jewels: Picked up a BRAND new, in box Lethal Enforcers for
Sega CD. The HUGE box, with the gun and game! Got part two as well(both
together were less than $20). Too cool....nothing like putting 28 bullets in
any civillian stupid enough to walk across the screen while you are taking out
the small army of men who decided to all rob this average bank...;)
Bel
Yeah, I had jumped to the conclusion that you were bad guy or omarichao
renamed, and then discovered I was wrong and posted again in appology. No,
that's not a significant name change to confuse anyone. :)
> I still didn't like SoA2 :)
The key point would be why did you not like SA2? If it's just because
it didn't appeal to you, or you didn't like some part of the gameplay,
that's cool. If you're going to make up problems like lots of other people
are doing, then my former posts about SA2 apply to you.
There is a reason I posted those SA2 posts. It's been an extremely
popular comment in the media to say that SA2 has a camera problem, and then
not describe the problem, and then major mike over at gamepro magazine even
claimed that it had a stuttering framerate. In this forum I finally worked
out that the camera 'problem' is in fact the player trying to run back to
the beginning of the Sonic levels, and the camera forces you to move forward
in the levels by always pointing in that direction. I don't see that as a
problem, it's part of the gameplay, move forward, play the level again if
you want to see something. Like NiGHTs, the main focus of the Sonic levels
is collecting as many rings and points while finishing the level quickly,
not exploring. Go to the "lame" Knuckles levels for that.

Oh, no, I was referring to my 32X actually having to be wiggled in the
Genesis catridge port it sits in, sometimes. That's probably a bad idea
with the system on, I'd imagine.

Yeah, I think the most I've ever payed for a game alone was $70 for
Revenge of Shinobi. Little did I know I got a rare American release of the
version that still had SpiderMan turn into Batman, instead of turning into a
gargoyle.

usually without docs or the original box.

Really? Dangit, stupid small town market. I know I'm the only one here
who buys these things, and they'll never negotiate with me, or sell their
"display" boxes with the game. I ought to make them an insert for the game
I want with photo shop and give them that, then they could put it in one of
their crappy universal cartridge boxes, and give me the good stuff. ;|

There's more, BC Racers came out for 32X as well, and I think they were
working on a version of Soul Star as well. There's also TMek that I forgot
about.

Heh, bought mine for $150, as a result I didn't buy the Saturn until
December 1995 when VF2 came out. I never felt ripped off, it was obvious
the danged thing didn't sell, that's why there are still 32Xs readily
available new in their original boxes, when only 500K were made. I don't
see how that would be Sega's fault at any rate. Ah well.

I'm making fun of popular sentiment. I like my 32X too, played it a lot
and would never take it off my Genesis 1 CD unit.
Oy! I have it as well, but I don't remember where I got it. I think at some
Funco Land or something. What is the other version like? It's not Spiderman and
Batman? I don't think I have ever seen the one without them.

That always gets me, when they want $10 or so and it's JUST the cart. I have
become either an extreme cheapskate or just outrageously picky when it comes to
buying old Genesis/Sega CD/32X stuff. It's like I'll only pay the following
based on certain aspects:
$0.99 to $3.99 - Cart only
$4.99 to $9.99 - I better at least get the damn box with it
$9.99+ - Unless this game is rare, I better have the box and booklet(complete)!

That's another thing that would get me: You got to Funco or someplace, they
open a drawer FULL of manuals that they WILL NOT give you unless you ask them
for when you're buying a game! I did catch one guy, who let me rumage through
the drawer and dig out quite a few booklets...but that was the only time it's
ever happened.
> I ought to make them an insert for the game
> I want with photo shop and give them that, then they could put it in one of

Especially when it's JUST a display box. It's like, they're not collectors,
they don't care if the game is complete, but yet they guard or leave out pieces
to it. Like Blockbuster, they give you the game, but keep the case and manual
so they can pitch them later(bastards). I think Hollywood Video is my favorite.
Sometime, go in there and just start opening cases, you will find that EVERY
ONE OF THEM has the damn booklet in it. They won't even let you borrow it when
you rent the game!!!

You're alright in my book, man! :)
For SoA2 i had expected too much as when my friend loaned me is copy he told
me something along the line of "i couldn't stop to play". It started good
with Sonic (i don't care about exploration i just wanted to run FAST :) )
but it degenerated with Knuckles and Tails. Really hate thoses as they're
just boring.

You really have because it's just "charming" (i can't find a better word).
And that's coming from someone who don't speak japanese and not a fan of
dating games. I was hesitant first but i endend getting it with a bunch of
saturn games like Shining Force III Part3, Shadow of the Tusk and Waku Waku
Puyo Puyo Dungeon. I just started playing it and it's addictive. I will get
the others on the Dc but i wish someone could translate thoses. No Working
Designs please................

I have two versions, the SegaCD1 classics disk version I think is the
same as the greatest hits version. Spider man turns into a gargoyal instead
of Batman, and Godzilla has no skin, making him a lot less recognizable, but
much cooler looking since you can see his organs in good detail. There's
also apparantly a version with Batman changed to a gargoyal but Godzilla
still has skin like the original version I have.

Yeah, I wouldn't even buy a game without the box until recently.
Without a lot of new games coming out, I'm bored more often and have the
cash to pick up those old titles. I've lowered my standards lately in favor
of actually owning games like SSF2 & TJ&E2, instead of just remembering
them.

Yeah, no kidding, I could make a near perfect photo copy of those

I never played any version of that game, so I couldn't tell you. I'm
not even certain I've ever seen it's box for 32X. As cheap as the Genny
port was, I'd bet they just upped the colors or something on the same small
sprites.

Yeah, especially considering that the 32X is the only Sega system, that
was really just an add-on no different from the Snes SFX chip that came with
the carts, that didn't get a library of over 100 games. The SegaCD and
Saturn weren't really failures software wise, they just weren't huge
commercial successes.

Hey! Thanks, you're alright yourself. I know I'm anal about people
bashing things that are good, just because they aren't popular. I also know
that because of that, I'm not going to be very popular. Heh.
I can relate to that. For years I haven't been able to enjoy a game, no
matter how well it's made, if it doesn't make a significant advancement in
gameplay (physics, AI, control options, speed, etc.) from other games that
are similar. It's like watching a sitcom, I know what's going to happen,
I've been there before, nothing's new, and the game isn't necessarily even
as fun as the game that did it first.
That's actually why I like SA2, sure the adventure and shooting levels
are dull compared to the Sonic levels. But there's nothing really wrong
with them either, the Sonic levels are just blazingly fast and far more
entertaining because of it. But......
> For SoA2 i had expected too much as when my friend loaned me is copy he
told

I can't blame you for thinking they're boring, although the later levels
of both are far from uninspired, and were actually fairly fun for me. After
I beat the game though, I never played any of those levels again. Except
for a cool Knuckles or Rouge level that has moons and meteors that you fly
or float to, that suck you into their gravity. Then you have to use a
spring, to get out of it's gravity well, after finding an emerald. That
level is just cool. I would definitely prefer a gameplay style that would
make those levels optional the first time through, it is a Sonic game after
all.

I have Shining Force III scenario 1 and 2. Never finished 2 because I
keep telling myself I'm going to translate it with my huge Japanese
character to English dictionary. It takes me an hour to translate one
dialog screen. Heheh. I do love those games, I have the Japanese Saturn
version of Grandia as well, it's way better than the US counterpart in
acting quality. I'll just leave WD out of it, they helped to negatively
hype the DC and push the PS2, and with UbiSoft and even Eidos now doing
translations too, I really don't see the need to buy one of their overpriced
limited edition games. Although I do love Gamearts and Technosoft games.

If it was a real Sonic games i wouldn't complaint at all. I think they
should rename it like Sonics and it's shooting friends or something more
accurate than Sonic Adventure. Thinking of it the first one had rights to be
called "adventure" but there's no adventure at all in SoA2

I tried to translate all the screen but it's easier getting a translation on

If i was Working Design i wouldn't hype the Ps2 while i publish games like
Gungriffon or Silpheed :).
Talking about Technosoft....... what are they doing now. It's been a while
since we heard from the company.

I totally agree. But I think it says more for how advanced the
Sonic/Shadow levels are to other 3D gameplay styles, than it hurts Sonic
Adventure 2 as a game. I mean for shooter and adventure style levels, there
really isn't anything out there to compare the Knuckles and Tails levels to
that would be a completely fair comparison, because they're unique too. If
you went from the Sonic levels in SA2 to, say, Mario 64, or Zelda, or Donkey
Kong or something, I think a similar boredom reaction would would occur.
None of those games require the insane reaction time and pin point accuracy
that the Sonic/Shadow levels do to get a good rating.
I agree with this as well. I think that's where the complaining is
coming in about SA2, it says it's a Sonic game, but it's really a game in
Sonic's world. However, except for Sonic CD and Sonic 1, every Sonic game
had different characters to play as. They just concerved space and didn't
give them their own levels. Sonic Adventure 1 did a similar thing, and made
the other characters play through Sonic's levels, but SA2 gave them their
own levels and now everyone complains, even though there's easily just as
many Sonic/Shadow levels as there have been in past games.

Well the general idea is to take the Kanji I translate and their
context, put them on flash cards and memorize them. This I have been doing,
and I figure I only have about 1800 more Kanji to memorize before I'll be
able to read Japanese. Heheh. Oh, I have taken two years of Japanese, so I
know how to pronounce the words, sentence structure, a hiragana/katakana.
It's just a big task to actually get familiar with the way the language is
actually used by native speakers.

Last game I knew of was Thunder Force V on Saturn, maybe one of the
Thunder Force Gold packs. It's a shame really, they made great shooters.
Maybe they're staying alive on hamster sims over in Japan or something.

It's a real crap shoot, some Funco's(almost all Gamestops now) are pretty cool
when it comes to old stuff, some aren't. It's really quite odd. At one Gamestop
I picked up a Genesis2/SegaCD2 combo for (drumroll please)$17.99!!! Then,
though, I will go to one across town and they will have just a regular old
Genesis 2 for $24.99. What I do kind of like is the fact that unless the game
is really well known for being rare, GS has no clue what to charge for it.
Example: Those fuckers KNOW that Shining Force 2 and 3 are rare as fuck, so
they jack your ass for $27.99 and $29.99 a piece, but then will turn around and
sell HARDCORE rare games like Sorcerer's Kingdom for $4.99 or Warsong for
$7.99....

Not only that, but I remember SNES games with the "SFX" chip in it being
upwards of $70 a piece. Hell, even at it's height, the 32X was only $149.99 or
so...

I agree. I think a lot of good games came out on the Sega CD, but the best
thing about that system had to be the audio. My GOD, the stuff that Spencer
Nilsen did with both Ecco's, Batman Returns, and yes even Sonic CD were
amazing! Tommy Tallerico's soundtrack for Virgin's "The Terminator" still rocks
my ass everytime I play it!

More power to you! :)
Yeah, the rare version is the cart that we both have, where Spiderman
turns into Batman. It was a limited press, and apparantly there was a legal
issue that caused Sega to release most of the US copies of RoS were the
later version with no Batman, and, I think, the copywrite screen with
Spiderman before the Sega symble.

Yeah, I notice that about Shining Foce 1+2, that really stinks too. You

That would have to be the only area I was disappointed with the Sega CD
and 32X. The biggest problem with the Genesis arcade conversions was memory
limitations on the cart. I really expected to see all of the Sega CD games
with smooth as Terminator, Spiderman and SoulStar. Instead they focused on
FMV games, which I never liked at all, and did a lot of straight graphic
ports of Genesis games with better music. I was extremely dissapointed with
the Golden Axe on the classics disk, they could have done a perfect arcade
conversion on a CD, but they didn't.
Similarly, the 32X could have done huge sprites and perfect arcade to
home conversions, and developers seemed content to do quick cruddy ports of
cruddy Genesis games in most cases. Not only that, but it had a great sound
chip, and hardly anything used it.

Oh yeah. To be brief, let's say that I paid $50 each, full retail, for
each of my eleven 32X games. I didn't pay that much, but I'll use that as
the extreme example. I did pay $150 for my 32X near launch. $150 divided
by 11 games is $13.63 per game for the 32X hardware(Way better than an SFX
chip), or a total cost per game of $63.63 each. *Far* from a freakin rip
off.

Occasionally, when you can find some that aren't just complete scum, you can
get some damn good deals on older stuff. The Pawn Shop mentality tells them
that if it's new, charge high, if it's old, sell if for what you can. You can
almost walk in, name your price and they will almost always give you any
Genesis game you want. Picked up quite a few high priced Genesis games for dirt
cheap pulling that stunt...;)

I agree, and for the most part, there were alot of high quality games that hit
that mark, but then again, there were a lot that didn't even come close.

The only one I ever cared for was Sewer Shark, but then again I liked Ghost.
Hey, have you ever seen a 32X Sega CD game? How is the video? Somewhere between
SCD and Saturn?

This didn't bother me too much, and some of the games(Pitfall and Earthworm
Jim) did add a few new levels.

Hell, they could have at least made it two players(it was only one player,
wasn't it? Or am I thinking of the DC Smash Pack?).

I agree. For the cost and performance of the "SFX" chip, I think it was a huge
rip off. Good example I like to point out: Virtua Racing Deluxe vs that Stunt
Racer FX(I think), or even 32X Doom vs Snes "SFX" Doom.

I think Spencer did work on Final Fight(remixing some of the tracks) and some
work on Spiderman along with that other guy they list on the cover.
While i'm there how was Thunder Force 5? I never got the chance to play it.

Hamster sims are popular in Japan, no joke.
> While i'm there how was Thunder Force 5? I never got the chance to play

I'd say it was the best in the series personally, the Saturn version
especially. The PS version has much more dull colors, partly due to the way
it due 2D with 3D graphics.

That's where he got it from, along with about five memory carts and some
other SCD games. I should have bought them too, can't remember why I
didn't. I did talk him into selling me one of the memory carts for what it
cost him. Man did I get lucky there.

Hmm, ought to try that. Especially here where they trade in games to
pawn shops for "loans" they'll never be able to pay back.

Exactly. I don't know why Pawn shop owners keep believing that these people are
going to come back to get their stuff back, especially when it's old. First
off, true hardcore collectors wouldn't sell it, but moreso if the shop owner
actually gives them anything over $10 most dumbass gamers won't come back to

It's been a long time and I didn't play a lot of it but the weird "tag team"

At one time these were common, but I don't think so now. I remember this and
some other Konami titles being on clearance at Walmart some years ago.
I've read that the player 2 pink gun is hard to find though.

I played both versions of Corpse Killer. The 32X CD version looks
extremely nice, better than a lot of Saturn video does.

Yeah, slightly bigger sprites would have been nice too. Technically it
could have, and should have, been better than the arcade version. I would
have gone for a good conversion of Dracula X, that was on the release list
from Konami too, they axed it and only released that crappy Snes version.
Yeah, I guess you're right. Makes me wonder why 32X stuff is so hard to find,
since noone seems to want it. Perhaps low production?

Yeah, could be. I don't understand why more people don't use the USPS instead.
With UPS going on strike every five and half minutes, and the USPS being
cheaper anyway I just don't get it. I have used nothing but USPS for a very
long time and have never had any problems. Oh well...

Oh yeah, it is. I usually see them going for $40 or higher. Since I can't get

too much...;)

BTW, do you know of anywhere that has a complete 32X game list?
The driving scenes in Batman and Robin(the animated series) on Sega CD were
also pretty cool. Just makes me wish they had something other than just driving
on it...

Really!? Wow, that's pretty cool. I will definitely have to pick a Sega CD 32X

but that one looks kind of interesting.

Goddammit, I think that with Capcom's support, and a few others the 32X really
could have made it. Instead, what did we get?

You are kidding me!? Man, that would have REALLY rocked! The SNES version was
soooo amazingly bad, and I LOVE Castlevania. I am actually getting depressed

Perhaps. Also if stores can't sell it they're not going to carry it.

USPS offers no tracking information (delivery confirmation is just that and
nothing more), so it's a headache for shippers when packages get lost (and
they do with all shippers). NCS has recently stopped offereing USPS for this
reason according to a recent update. Also if you insure a package the rates
aren't as much different...the biggest difference is with a light package
like a game or two; once you get up to something like a system the cost
difference isn't much.

Yet I believe they still brought out the inferior "Henry Explorers"
(different name in the US that I can't recall, Crypt Killer or something).

Gamefaqs 32X system FAQ, no idea of its accuracy and/or completeness:

I never played that one, and have passed up multiple opportunities to
pick it up for $10. Now I can't find it. :(

My memory could be off, I did play it before I played any Saturn games.
I just remembered it looking very clear and colorful. If I recall correctly
it wasn't quite full screen, but it was much large on the screen that the
plain Sega CD version was. I'd bet on the 32XCD and Saturn versions being
identical.

Well, as with all consoles or add-ons, the 3rd parties wait for the
sales. Since users wait for either the media to hype it, or the games to
come out that they want, it never really had a chance. Although, I do
remember Gamepro and Gamefan talking favorably of it, and touting large
release lists right up until launch. The poor little thing never sold
through it's initial 500,000 manufactures, even after they dropped to $20
with Star Wars Arcade.

Yeah, I'd buy a TG16 and CD-Rom if I thought I could find the original game.
Who knows, with that 68000PC Castlevania being re-released on PS
...and holy shit was it BAD! I remember seeing the screenshots, thinking that
it looked alright, then I bought it. What a mistake that was, thank God EB let
me return it. I saw it once in the arcade, it actually has shotguns you cock
EVERYTIME you shoot....I can only dream of the arm cramps...;)

I have had the opportunity a few times, but that is just WAY to much damn
money, even for Castlevania. With that game going for $150 or so, then the
system for about $140...I just don't know.

I just wish that they'd quit teasing us with this "maybe, oh, I don't know,
let's look at the sales, etc" bullshit and just let us know, one way or
another, is Castlevania 3 being redone for PSX. He hinted it throughout the
entire interview. Getting them to EVER redo Castlevania X on any platform other
than PC Engine would take an act of God(not to mention very little programming
on their part, but they are still too lazy)...
I hate to fly off the handle, but this bullshit of release ONE classic game on
a CD has to stop. Now, especially with the new formats like GD Rom and DVD,
crap like the Namco Museums need to beefed up A WHOLE LOT. 6 games, that take
up less than 10 megs, on a goddamn GD Rom!?
Then of course, we come to good'ole-fuck-us-up-the-ass Konami. Players scream
and scream for a Castlevania compilation. What do they do? Cancel the DC
version first, then release ONE classic version of Castlevania on a CD.
Imagine, every Castlevania, original code or not, all put, very nicely onto one
DVD. Slap a label on, jack the gaming community for $50(just like every other
GC, PS2 and X-Box publisher is doing) and be done with it....
Bel: sleepy and angry...
It was by Christmas of that year, I'm honestly not sure if it was at launch.

Not only that, but it's one that nobody's played before, *but* nobody
had heard of before. Why they would do that game and not one of the more
popular or heard of ones I don't get it either. Six Namco classics games
are probably less than 2MB, they'd likely all fit on a floppy with room to
spare. I dunno, I guess if every company releases a really nice compilation
disk of their old games, my whole collection will suddenly only be worth a
hand full of CDs. That would kinda suck.
IIRC, wasn't it given some pretty nice reviews by almost everyone? I remember
the guys at Gamefan really liking it.

It's a good thing that game was only $20 new, even though I still feel shafted
on it, I would have felt raped if it had been any higher...;)
> Six Namco classics games

Yeah, the 10 megs was a bit high, but either way it's a disgrace to have only
that one one CD/GD/DVD.
> I dunno, I guess if every company releases a really nice compilation

Hmmmmm, I disagree a little on that. I think it would be nice, and even though
the value of my collection would go down, I don't think it would bother me too
much as I never plan to sell anything in it. I look at rarity in two ways: I
either own the game, then I like the rarity of it, or I don't own the game,
then I hate the rarity of it. Sometimes, I can almost understand the piracy,
when it comes to an item like Castlevania X or Panzer Dragoon Saga which most
people haven't EVER seen.
It's kind of like a situation we had down here in Texas a while back: This talk
show host released a CD compilation of some of his best stuff. Only printed
about a hundred or so, that was it. Then, gets on the air screaming about how
people are jacking it on Napster. Well, dumbass, don't fuck your fans by
releasing and item you KNOW that everyone wants in a ridiculously low print. It
was absurd in my opinion...
Bel
Yeah, it's because until the PS version that came way later it was the
best console conversion. Even though it was technically less impressive
than the PC game and only contains the levels of the shareware version of
Doom. Apparantly it was SOA's fault too, they forced Id to release the game
early. I'd bet if they'd have given Id the time they wanted, they would
have done like most other developers and never even bothered to release
their game. I personally put a lot of hours into 32X doom and I don't think
I ever beat it playing straight through (It has a level select available
from the start). Oh yeah! It was because if you played it straight through
it was likely to actually crash and display dev code explaining the glitch!
Heheh.
The 3D0 version was great. Yeah, that border you see on the 32X
version, multiply that by three and expect an even choppier framerate. I
think you could actually control the border size on that game though.
As Wolfenstein-ish as the Snes game was, at least it had all the
textures of the PC version, the 32X version didn't have that either. It
looked about like Zero Tolerance for the Genesis more than anything else,
flat shaded backgrounds for floors instead of scrolling textures.

> >

I've never much liked them anyway. Their games are some of the best in
the industry, but they seem to rely too much on trial and error gameplay,
meaning you actually die and start over a lot trying to guess what the
developer wanted you to do. Which will always cause me not to buy a game.
Great games, but there are ways to encourage a player to perfect their
skills without making them backtrack or start a level all over again.

Well, I'd totally love to get true arcade conversions of some of my
Genesis games. The thing that I would hate would be popping in Shinobi 3 in
cartridge form, and knowing for once that there's a better version available
now. Some of the games in my library, like PDS and Shinobi 3 and Phantasy
Star 3 can't be played in any form or semblance anywhere else. As much as
I've always wanted a sequel to top them, it'd be sad to put those games one
notch down on the best ever list after their ten year reign.

I think I heard about that guy. Yeah, if you want people to buy your
stuff, MAKE ENOUGH FOR THEM.
Now that I have played Doom on an actual computer(my iMac) it's hard to play
even the badass PSX version. I love the transparencies, and especially the
music(my GOD it's good) but the framerate and resolution is pretty bad. I tried
sometime ago, unsuccessfully to extract the soundtrack from Doom, but never
could get any of the programs out there to actually work. Kind of sucks. I
could have gotten it off, converted it to MP3, then played it and turned the
music off on the iMac Doom and it would have been PERFECT!!!

It's kind of like Dominick at Lobotomy said to me once, "You're never through
with a game, they just take it away from you"...;)

Oh, I am with you all the way. Back when I only had my Centris, playing Mac
games just wasn't an option so when I got the 32X version I played it NONSTOP!
Man, it was so good, so different than anything I had ever played before. I
actually never noticed that the enemies never turned their back to you, because
they didn't have that animation. ;) I also remember being very impressed with
the graphics and framerate...but that was a long time ago. I played it a bit
last night, just for kicks, I still think it's pretty impressive for the 32X
hardware. I also agree with you on it being rushed. Had they of had a little
more time, I think they may have been able to get it a little bit more full
screen with a smaller border...

That was the worst! I remember being on the LAST level and it pulled that
bullshit on me. All in all though, I think I went completely through it,
without dying about 5 or 6 times...

Still, for a shit version of Doom, NOTHING will ever beat the Saturn version!
My God, not even the SNES version was THAT bad...

I just couldn't get over the framerate on the SNES version; have you seen the
GBA version yet? I am betting, like almost ALL GBA games, it's just the SNES
version with a few minor enhancements. It would be nice if they actually took
advantage of the GBA hardware for once, and made a pretty smooth, portable
Doom...

I think it would have been cool for Sega to have the DC check disc, and if it

but like this "Please insert REAL disc". ;)

Good call, but remember, even if they came out on a compilation CD/DVD you
still don't get the packaging, manual etc, which is a good reason to have to
original. Plus, and I may be off on this, but most games, when redone always
seems to mess it up somehow. Somehow, even though the hardware is superior,
they cannot seem to get the game right. Even the Sega CD 5/4 in on Classics are
off just a tiny bit, and that's a no brainer for the developers...;)

Yeah, some of the best midi work ever. I'm glad I'm not the only one
who thought the PSX version wasn't as smooth as it should have been. But
then, the PSX was never really better than a 486 PC for that kinda thing
anyway.

It really was a good port when you compare it to all the other versions.
Wasn't the Jaguar version pretty good too? I think I remember seeing them
both compared to eachother in a game shop once. The Jaguar version had all
the animations, and I think it was full screen. Doom was definitely an
original game, I don't know why, but I haven't liked a single FPS since
then.

That's impressive too, especially considering that most people tend to get
motion sick. I had a friend go outside and puke just from watching a few
levels. Heheh.

Oh yeah! I was going to mention that one. I couldn't believe how bad that
game was! Running on almost identical hardware, with more resources, and it
turns out worse than the cartridge version. Unbelievable, especially
considering the decent port of Quake, and the Matrox Mystique style
accelerated port of Duke Nukem.

I don't think it's as cheasy as the Snes game was. I'm pretty sure it
has floors, ceilings and multiple tiers like Doom was meant to be. I could
be wrong though. Imagine kids and business men playing that game on buses
and airplanes. Heheh.

Yeah, exactly like that. Developers! Just put stuff like this in your
games, and you can be sure I'll never give you a penny!

Hmm. They did announce a 2D PS2 Castlevania, that'll be worth checking
into, hopefully the dev cycle won't be too much longer. Have you played
that N64 Castlevanias? I heard they're pretty good, and I've heard they
completely suck, and it can't be both. Sounds like I'd like them, heheh.

That's true, it's not like I'd suddenly not like my collection. But why
am I going to play the Genesis version of Strider now, when the PS version
is truly arcade perfect? Other than nostalgia and comparison plays. I
guess it'll help me keep my carts in good shape.

Why bother anyway.
I actually forced myself to sit down and play this thing all the way
through from the begining with no codes on. You get one extra level to
play at the end that you can't pick with the level select, and the
fucking game still goes to a C:\ whenever you beat it.

Joe Ottoson raves about it whenever I mention it. I have heard good thing from

much!

I'll never forget it: Ezra(lead programmer) at Lobotomy stated that "the
developers of that game should be dragged out to the street and shot". I agree.
;)

I couldn't believe it, especially when I compared the 32X version with the
Saturn version and the 32X version had a HIGHER framerate.

Quake, Duke and especially PowerSlave were all very well done and seriously
impressive for the hardware of the Saturn. The whole Lobotomy method for light
sourcing was really innovative, and took a lot of work off the processor
allowing the smooth framerates.

Hell, even though I can't see the damn screen without a 10,000 Watt lighbulb, I

I agree with the Strider, I too rarely play that one now that I have the PSX
Strider 2 collection. BTW, is it just me or is the first one still way better
than part 2?
Oh yeah, I remember that. Hehehhe, that last level was kind of tough with every
enemy in the game being in it. As long as you had the Pulse Rifle, you could do
ok....until you beat it and get the "C:\", not even the BFG could take that
one...;)
You must have some crazy connections, to even try.

No, but I know it's a great game, I just haven't seen it in years. It's
probably not cheap now either.

Hmm, the only time I've ever gotten motion sick was when I was a kid on
one of those spinning things at MacDonalds. I ran and spun myself as fast as
I could and watched my surroundings get blurry, for an hour. I was sick all
night, but that's the only time.

Right along with a bunch of other developers. Or maybe I should say
publishers that put a game out, rather than do whatever it takes to get it
out right.

Not to mention EA. Oh, wait, they make money re-releasing the same four
games every year, and occasionally coming up with something unique, that's a
whole different animal.

Pirates I know do it just because they can. They don't play the games,
or sell them. It's really odd. I've used the occasional CD-R to test a
game, but if I don't like it, I don't play it, if I do, I go out and buy the
danged thing. CD-Rs are ugly, heheh.

Yeah, part 2 was way better than the US Gold release for the Genesis,
but it doesn't match the first game somehow. Maybe it's just because it
really doesn't improve on the first game enough.
Oddly enough, a lot of these guys I have always wanted to talk to, I have. I'm
not bragging, but I've talked to Dan Forden(MK Music), Scott Hawkins(Sega Swirl
creator), Pete Clark(Producer of DC UT), Dan Jevons(Knighmare at the old GF),
almost everyone at Lobotomy(PowerSlave, Duke, Quake on Saturn) and ECM at GF.
They're all very nice, and I was shocked to hear anything from them, let alone
meet some of them face to face. I would still love to get a hold of Aubrey to
talk about the Doom Soundtrack, and especially Spencer Nilsen so I could tell
him how phenomenally amazing I found his work one Ecco and Ecco: ToT.

As long as it looks good, doesn't really seem to matter to most does it? I
always think of Toh Shin Den when this comes up...man, I cannot believe how
crazy this country went over that piece of shit. I will NEVER forget that one
cover of Game Players Magazine: "Greatest game of all time". I about cried...

The PSX version is still readily available at most places, and pretty
cheap(about $9 or so). It's not the best out of the three versions, but it's
very, very good still. If you ever run across the Saturn version, I would
HIGHLY recommend it!

Doom, along with Hexen were absolute travesties on the Saturn.

Oh, sweet Jesus, if you don't have Duke on Saturn...what are you doing man!?
Duke on Saturn is (pardon me)FUCKING good. Super smooth framerate, UNCENSORED
quotes/levels, good control(you can play with the regular pad, or the analog
for "Jevon's Control{which I was there when they named it that}" which is just
like playing UT or Q3 or anything else on the DC) and most of all: DEATH TANK
ZWEI!!!!! The BEST multiplayer game OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't much care for any of them, other than my Nomad. Nothing beats a good

I remember the good'ole days, when EA would put something out other than {the
same}sports titles. General Chaos, B.O.B, The Immortal, etc....wow, those were
the days...

Oh man, part two on the Genesis, what was Capcom thinking letting US Gold(of
ALL companies) do it!?
Heheh

That's really cool. It just goes to show you what you can get just by

Oh yeah, I remember that. That game was a joke, I have no idea what
made it popular. Other than everyone I knew who'd never played games
before, somehow managed to pick up a PS and that game and have fun mashing
buttons.

Yeah it was, I actually really enjoyed it. It's probably the last high
res Saturn game, if I recall. I really should have bought it when I had the
chance. I wasn't much of a game collector then though, and I never ever
bought games that didn't have a gameplay advancement over the best game in
the genre. Duke had character, but it played almost exactly like Doom.
Which, in retrospect, isn't a bad thing at all. I'll find it too.

That's true. I'd waste a lot of spare time with an RPG on a portable.
I just wouldn't want to play any of my favorite action games on such a small
screen. Man, I wish they'd make a TV adapter for the GBA, I'd buy it
tomorrow.

Yeah, they released some good games back then, The Immortal in

It really doesn't make sense. It seems like all of their popular games
that I like, they won't make sequels to. Yet they've dragged Street Fighter
along for a decade now.
I mean, come on, Maximo's okay, but it doesn't have the feeling of
Ghouls n Ghosts. Super GnG, and Ghost's N Goblins maybe, but not the
original Ghouls N Ghosts. I never could figure out what made that game so
entertaining for me, yet I couldn't stand the other two, and now Maximo's
the same way, and I was looking forward to it.
I know it, isn't it great? ;)

No combos, no control, all graphics....I think that's what got the general
American gaming public with that game. ;)

What makes Duke so good, in my opinion are the levels, especially the ones on

Ghouls and Ghosts on the Genesis was great, it was truly old-school platforming
at it's best. Not to hard, not to easy and with a lot of cool weapons and
such...
I think it's the first one I've participated in that hadn't digressed
into a flame war in at least one subthread. Very nice.

Yeah, the levels were cool. They just don't give me that gritty
satisfaction that Doom 1 levels did. But then, it has a similar problem as
all other FPS other than Doom, when you shoot things, they don't die. I
think the biggest thing for me with Doom was shooting most of the enemies
with the shot gun and seeing them die in one hit, and shooting into a crowd
with a bazooka and seeing the immediate death of most everything standing in
the area. Nothing else has really done it as solidly, that I've played.

Oh! Jeez, they did make one. I wonder if it works very well......$180 for
a GBA and the adapter, :(

Budoken was cool. It was actually one of the games that got me to seriously
consider practicing martial "arts".

That's the only thing I can pin on it too. It was challenging, but not
cheap or too difficult. And it had the ability to throw the weapon up and
down! Screw the stupid mid-air jump and let the guy throw his weapon above
and below him.
In this day and age, it's hard to do that in good'ole RGVS.
>

Well, back when I first saw it, like Wipeout, I thought the graphics were very
impressive. Nowadays, they are good, not great(like you said).

I think Duke does it well, most things will die pretty quickly from the
shotgun, and especially the damn rocket launcher(man, that thing kills me more
than it does the enemies). Now, later on in the game, you're right, the pigs
and lizards don't go down nearly as quickly as the enemies in the first half of
the game did.
Also, and just to comment on what I see FPS shooter today: 1) They're all
polygon based now, so having 100 imps is just pretty much out of the question
until they can get some better 3D cards and processors out on the market so
therefore 2) They make every enemy a challenge(the first Quake was a good
example of this with the Ogres and Fiends).
>

I saw it for $80, but still, that's too damn much to play a portable SNES on
the TV. Hell, just take the $80, buy a SNES and use the other $50 to buy the
games you wanted on it(general majority of them are all available on the SNES
from with they were ported). The GBA is such a joke to me... ;)

I always loved the competitions where the guy gets a 6 foot pole and you got
the...well, nothing sometimes. Two hits, everytime: Whap, whap! hehehehe ;)

I liked the Magic Armor system as well; assuming you could keep your Magic
Armor long enough to use it. Some of the spells were pretty sweet!
Yeah, that's probably it. Not as many enemies to destroy, and enemies
are more powerful than you are. Not quite as fun in my opinion, but then
they moved on to multiplayer too, which I don't like to do because of time
constraints.

It's just that Sonic Advance is so pretty, and I'd like to have it full

Yeah! Though, that was in SGnG too I believe. But yeah, I used to pause
the game during the lighting magic attack, and leave the screen there just
when Arthur was just a sillouette(sp?), very cool for the day.

Doom on the Jaguar was very good. Full screen. Alot of stuff intact
(from PC). No ingame music. Big woop. Usually when I frag demons in
real life I'm not using my Rio or Nomad (har har grin). Plus, it was
networkable with another Jaguar (tho buggy due to Atari). Carmack used to
post to Usenet back in 1993 and 1994. There's a "famous" post from then
on why ID did the Jaguar port inhouse but farmed out 3DO, etc. Punch
'doom jaguar carmack' into Google Groups and hit the first result. I
still play Jag Doom at least once a year, every Halloween. The first year
it came out I cranked it up thru the stereo and blasted it at the trick or
treaters. It's the perect version for that. No load times. Goes right
into demo mode. And no music, just SFX. Lots of screaming and shotguns.
An odd tradition I keep up to this day.
>> > The 3D0 version was great. Yeah, that border you see on the 32X

Read the post I mentioned above. Carmack went into Jaguar and 3DO
viability at the time. Interesting.

Linux + DOCSIS1.0 + OpenSSH + GnuPG + Pine + TRN4 = Global 24x7 Shell
I used to not like multiplayer FPS, but then I played UT on DC and it got me
hooked. Shortly after the UT servers started being over run with fucking
Gamesharkers and people who would use "Auto Aim" I bought UT on the Mac. I
CANNOT get enough!
Oh, and get this: I was trying to remember the name of the people they got to
port Doom over on the Saturn, and if I find it and it's who I remember it was
someone in this newsgroup is in SERIOUS trouble. ;) Anyway, as I was looking
around for it, I read a review of Saturn Doom that said ALL 20 tracks of the
ambient music provided by Aubrey Hodges, is REDBOOK on the Saturn
disc!!!!!!!!!! I am going to pick it up next time I see it, bring a CD player,
test it and buy it if that's true! Hell, even though I'd never pop it in the
Saturn(EVER) I would love to have it just to use it as a music CD(like I do
with Ecco and Ecco:ToT. They never get played, I just use them for the music).
>

I don't blame you, I wouldn't mind getting it for my girlfriend either:
Assuming it ever drops to a REASONABLE price. I would pay about $20 for it, and
then give it to her....at least then, I could get Castlevania and finally play
it...and, more importantly, see it! ;)

From what I recall, Saturn Doom was gamewise a pretty smelly port, and the
Jag port was better. Tho I think the music *was* Redbook, yes.
Hmmm..
aha!
Compare/contrast all Doom ports, good site!
Oh, sweet Jesuss, it was REAL BAD. I'll never forget the overwhelming feeling of
disappointment that washed over me after I hit the start button and started to move
around. At that point all I had was my Saturn, so I was REALLY hoping the Saturn
version would be just as good, if not better, than the PSX version.
> and the
> Jag port was better.
Yeah, I hear that the Jag is pretty much the best port of all of them. I liked the
PSX for the transparencies, I thought they were a nice touch, but the framerate
kills me. When I get the soundtrack, playing it in the iMac while playing Ultimate
Doom on the iMac will be the PERFECT version in my opinion.
> Tho I think the music *was* Redbook, yes.
>
See, as much as I would like to completely fly off the handle on the fuckers at
Rage, I do have to at least give them credit for making the audio Redbook. Next
time I see Saturn Doom I will pick it up. I will rip Aubrey Hodges amazingly
ambient soundtrack to MP3, turn around and burn it to audio CD, use it as a
soundtrack only, then pop Saturn Doom in the microwave for 2 seconds....(btw, if
you've never done this, try it, just once. Label side down and NO MORE THAN 3
seconds though, trust me).
