Freeing a pet from a pit

I'm reviewing the ttyrec from my last game on NAO. On the lowest level of Sokoban, my pet pony fell into one of the pits. I attempted #untrap and got the message "You know of no traps there." I didn't think to ask here at the time. I got him free by swapping places with him.

Is this some new horror of 3.6 that you can't #untrap pets from pits, a bug, or something else?
