I love my CV and John Papaduik's other games but I'd ask him why he
made the feed from the VUK so random on CV. You get some crazy bounces
in all that open space sometimes and the ball saver doesn't always
help. I assume it may be due to having to route the subway through
such a crowded playfield. It's the only (minor) think I dislike about
the game.

With a question like that...there has to be some backstory I don't
know about.

As for a favorite designer...I don't know if I have one. I love my
Steve Ritchie Black Spider-Man along with Steve's STTNG. I also love a
lot of Barry Oursler's games. I think my designer question wouldn't be
designer specific.

I'd just ask if they had a hard time thinking of designs that did
seem to similar to other machines that had already been built? I can
imagine that you could have a game planned out and not realize it's
very much like another game until you were deep in the design process.
I just wonder if that happens ofter?

Questions for John Trudeau.....

Why did you never make a DMD sequel for Hollywood Heat? A modern
version of that game would be kick-ass.

Why does Flintstones only have five modes while Dredd has 9?

Can I buy one of your whitewoods? (I would love Hollywood Heat to go
with your copy of the manual I got from you a few years ago)

Why haven't you made a game for Stern yet?

Why do I hate Deadly Weapon as much as I love it? (how is that even
possible?)

Why couldn't Bugs Bunny be better designed? (the reversed playfield
was really cool but the rest kind of stunk)

Why did I sell my Congo? I miss it

These questions may have already been answered, but I have 3 for Pat
Lawlor that come to mind:

1) Why that pop bumper placement on TZ (creating many left side insta-
drains)?
2) Why is the incredibly hard-to-make 3-way combo shot on Whirlwind
only worth a paltry 250k?
3) Why do the targets on NGG spell out "K-I-C-K" when something golf-
related would have been much better, such as "S-A-V-E". A "sand save"
is a golf term, while "kick" has nothing to do with golf. A minor
nitpik, I know.

Ok, one bonus question for SR: Why that shape slings on STTNG
(creating a trampoline effect for insta-outlane-drains)? Very
frustrating indeed. Otherwise, a near-flawless game, but this is a
major negative.

There was an overhead switch that was made whenever the ball rolled
through into the shooter lane in the original; design. I would call
it ignorant cost reduction. I wasn't at Stern when they decided to
take the switch out. It is regrettable.

You are right, Bryan, although he had good things to say about Eugene
Jarvis also. His interview was so off the wall that no one should
take it seriously. He spoke badly of my brother Mark and Ken Fedesna,
two people who saved his ass from the axe SO MANY TIMES!! Python led
a charmed life that allowed him to exist and get paid for doing the
least amount of work of anyone on any team. Some where in that abused
body of his was a good heart. I don't know if it is still there today
though.

My friends from Williams all shake their heads and wonder why he said
these terrible things about virtually everyone but Eugene and I. None
of us understand it.

He hurt a lot of people with his Topcast interview, but he has to live
what he said and did now. I don't feel very good about his
compliments.

The shape of the slings was necessary to make room for fasteners and
the hub of the gun/motor assembly. I could have and should have
extended the stainless flipper return frames, and made them taller.

These modified return frames are manufactured by several people, and I
recommend them for a less frustrating time on the game. Even though I
have stated a few times that I think I made a mistake on STTNG's
slingshots/drain problem, some dopey and anal owners think that the
game should not be modified "because that's how the designer meant it
to be!".

Bullsh%t. I would install the extended return frames and enjoy the
game more.

I am not proud of "Buy In" either, but it was one of those things that
"all games must have" for awhile at Williams. It did increase
earnings for awhile.

On a serious note, who was the first designer to come up with the
"fan" type of layout that is used in a lot of stern pins. I'm not sure
if that goes back to wms days or not. A releated question, who came up
with the squared off rubber stops that protect the lane guides in a
fan layout?

extendalanes on there - seriously played one with them, and the game
never ended.....

Remove the challenge and it removes too much fun..... might as well put
nails in the outlane.

The outlane as released punishes bad shots, like it should. You shoot
crappy vectors, ball drains. Tough..... learn to play better....

I'm with you on the buy in though that's complete garbage. Might as
well play with the glass off.

On mine, if the ball doesn't completely make the delta ramp, it goes
screaming into the right outlane drain. That's with the extended lane
installed. I can handle the other dangers but the delta ramp is not an
easy shot to make with that kind of consequence.

What question would I ask my favorite designer? The same question I
would ask of any designer--what playfield toy would you have used if
given the chance? I am sure a lot of neat features were costed out of
games. I'd like to hear about them, and about other wishes the
designers had.

Ditto, kind of. Mine falls down the ramp, hits something and makes a

As a home owner of TSPP and LOTR, I would have liked a few more
configuration options to alter the difficulty of the game. For
example, on LOTR, having to make 4 timed ramp combos during Destroy
the Witchking is a bit unrealistically difficult. It would be nice to
be able to set that lower. Even better, I so wish Keith would have
put in an adjustment for Alien Invasion. Locking 4 balls is a
reasonably hard task; 5 is ridiculously hard.

accumulated a number of new ideas for the toys and play. And you
don't ask dumbass questions.

I will thank you for the STTNG design team. There was massive talent
focused on every detail, and everyone who worked on the game was
passionate about making it great.

The components for the cannons called for bigger slingshots. Look
under your playfield and see why regular sized slingshots would not
have been feasible.

Bonus Question? What do I win, Dude?

My wife and I were on a pin drive not too long ago listening to that
interview, and after a while of no one saying anything she looks at me
and says, "Who is this crazy old man?" I almost wrecked from laughing.

I've said all along that people can do whatever they want to their own
games, make them easier, make them harder, whatever they want. As long
as they're under no illusions that making something easier makes them a
better player.

Removing something challenging doesn't make it more fun. It certainly
removes an earned sense of accomplishment. I walked away from the next
gen that had the extendolanes in it because the victory was completely
hollow.

Games that have that lane in there - the player will never learn the
proper way to beat it. The machines that go down the right from a weak
delta ramp shot, that's a different issue and truly would be unfair, but
mine doesn't do that (I wonder if the side to side level makes a large
difference there?)

Thats what I like to hear, ideas are what makes the future and
certainly a follow on from black knight 2k would be seriously cool.

Now if only PLD could be persuaded to continue and to change his
negative thoughts about RGP as we're all in it to play pinball at the
end of the day.

I would like to ask the Pinball 2000 designers what ever happened to
the Monster Bash Pinball 2000 machine they designed. I don't think the
concept title was Monster Bash, but it was a Monster themed game.
Would it ever be a possibility in the future? Could you imagine? How
cool is that.....

That's the best thing anyone has said to me all week. Thanks.

That is an impressive line up of machinery. Not to mention I'd bet you enjoy
riding them too, not just static museum pieces. Congratulations ! LTG :)

I can't let a motorcycle sit. I don't have a showroom for them, so
they get ridden. This economy really brought out some stellar deals-
Super X's new in box on the cheap and Harley closes down Buell and
gives $5k rebates on any new ones left....

Just like pinball, you get them while you can.

In my country, pinball plays YOU!

I give credit to the interviewer for maintaining his poise and playing
a good straight man. I would have been strongly tempted to "howard
stern" the guy. "Alright, Python, let's be honest: you're loaded
right? Aren't you concerned that you're embarrasing yourself?"
Probably only works if you have the interviewee cornered in your
studio, though.
