I'm a reasonable person and I know things happen.

I paid Fred Hiss in CO $190.00 for a minty BH backglass (110.00 plus
80.00 shipped UPS with insurance for 200.00)

Fred packed the glass in a sheet, some foam, and a box. Nothing really
supporting it from flexing. It of course arrived in tiny pieces and I
was bummed to have a really nice glass destroyed. Filed a claim with UPS
which took forever and after inspection they denied the claim based on
"poor packing".

Contacted Fred today to try to work out a fair refund and his response:
"Sorry Mike. I'm not a shop and I don't do refunds. We tried the
insurance and that didn't work. We packed it as best as we could and it
got busted. We both took a hit on this and the game is gone. Lessons
learned on both sides. Be well friend"

Somehow him keeping the full payment and my having nothing falls a bit
short of "both taking the hit".

So being it was outside Paypal's 45 day dispute policy I took their
agent's advice and filed a dispute with the CC I used (they give 120
days to file) for the full amount which they immediately refunded to
me.

As I said I'm a reasonable person but what can you do when a seller
won't work with you?

The first time something like this happened with me was not pinball, I
was selling a trolling motor on EBay. Usually I pack things myself, but
in this case The odd size and shape I had taken it to my usual UPS store
and let them pack it. To make a long story short, it arrived and would
not work, the buyer cited "there wasn't much packed around the motor".
I usually don't insure the things unless they are over $200.00, this
came to just under including shipping. I apologized and refunded the
buyers money in full, and took the hit all myself - lesson learned. The
trolling motor cost around $250 when it was purchased new.

that stinks - glad you got your money back

i was at both ends of this - one time i got one and it was destroyed -
no problems with the seller as it was sent back to him and i never
even saw it - he refunded right away

another time about 1 year ago i sold somebody on here an official
basball backglass for $40 - i told him to not pay me until it arrived
safely - i guess i did a poor job - i put it in a box in which i had
received it's plexiglass replacement.

stupid on my part - anyway he got it in pieces and the post office had
marked right on the box destroyed in transit - i put a claim in and i
was shocked they did pay me - actually a lot more then i was selling
it for - i felt guilty - but the other party had to help me with the
claim

i did take it out and box it at my local small post office and she
thought we did a good enough job - it was only a wall hanging -
otherwise i would have built something to make sure it didn't get
broke.

it's something if the buyer was local i would have just giving it to
me - i think i have given away 50 backglasses over the last few years
- i think chris (maxbadazz) might have 10 of them or so.

thanks ed

This is the main reason I do not ship BGs anymore ( An I have a Ton of
them ), I;ve never got one broken ( Thanks to MikePins great
packing ), Just not worth the risk for me to try & ship them .

Honestly the worst part out of all of this was the loss of a really
really nice BH glass. I was actually pissed at myself for buying
it..otherwise it would still be in one piece.

You just can't replace them, once we lose one it's gone.

and another reason why you should use Fed Ex. I had a BG break via
Fedex. Filed a claim, showed an ebay auction of it's replacement value,
received full insurance for it.

UPS normally does pay out insurance claims for damage with zero issue.
But I guess once they heard "glass" they wanted to see it was packed
properly. When it was decided it wasn't they denied the claim.

Seller deserves an ASSHOLE ALERT for saying he doesn't do refunds and that he shared the hit since insurance didn't work.

Also, I'll repeat my saying: Insurance COmpaNies are your friend until something goes wrong.

I sure hope you get to keep YOUR money after you return the pieces to the seller.

That stinks and if it broke it was packed wrong. I have shipped alot of backglass and never had one break. Why because I Pack it correctly. You are being nice about it.

When I pack them I put it between 2 owens fiber board pieces and then pack it in a box that is lined with peanuts. We put a backglass in 2 pieces of owens board and threw it around 1 afternoon. Could not break the glass. Even tossed it off the roof. I don't hesitate to ship but it costs some money in packing to do it right.

For glasses I had sent out for repair in the past; I put them in a wooden crate of 2x2's and 3/4 plywood both sides. Cost $75 one way but guarantee to arrive OK.

Sounds like with PP you will get your money back.

Don't ship backglasses via FedEx or UPS unless you like broken glass and
insurance disputes.

Ship them registered mail via USPS and they will get there unbroken.
When you ship them registered mail they are totally handled by hand.

I've bought four backglasses, all shipped USPS, all arrived fine. The
guy who I've bought them from has told me that he used to use UPS/FedEx
and had issues. Since going registered mail with USPS, no issues.

There's something about UPS and shipping stuff made of glass. If you are looking to convert said glass into much smaller pieces of glass, by all means use UPS. If not, try another shipper. I think UPS employees really like the sounds of broken glass.

Sounds more accurate to call him a bad packer, not a bad seller.

Hmmm.... that sounds worse now that I think about it.

Um..yeah ;)

Actually it was bad packing. But in the end not working with me on some
kind of amicable refund was what made him a bad seller as well.

As an update, Discover filed a chargeback for the full amount to Paypal.
So luckily I didn't have to take the hit after all.

BTW Fred's RGP username is "vespertillio" for future reference.

I don't understand why he claims you "both" took a hit either. Glad the
cc company came through, and hope he takes the full hit with the
chargeback. Maybe he'll pack things a bit better in the future.

There's no way you should be out a penny for something that was
completely out of your control. Thx for the heads-up on this BAD SELLER>

Shay should post a tutorial on how to ship back glasses. The ones I've got from them have been beautifully packed. One box inside of another outer box with plenty of peanuts ( At least 2 inches on all sides ) around them.

I had a backglass arrive broken and filed a claim with Fed Ex and they
refunded my money in 4 days. The box had a hole in the side though and
was obviously mishandled.

If the determination is poor packing, the shipper is liable.

The vast majority of backglasses I have shipped to me arrive OK.

It's all in the packing. It ain't rocket-science.

I sent a marquee (arcade) and made a small box out of extra thin plywood, wood screws and 1x1's. took 20 minutes and less than $10 in materials including the carpet padding that I used to protect it. it was cheaper than insurance!

Check out how we pack old backglasses - over 75 shipped with no breakage!

https://www.flippers.com/back4sal.html

Now, you do have to get the cardboard shells made by a box company (ours
cost us around $12 per shell), then the large bubble pack, strapping,
air box stapler, etc., but these boxes are STRONG!

If someone else wants to use my shell design I'd be happy to share the
dimensions...heck I should (and shall) put it on my backglass page in
the near future!
