I cant recall seeing Hackman ever do a bad job.

I saw it and thought Hackman did an outstanding job. Well written, well
acted and the saxophone was perfect touch for the character.
Irish Mike
I stood on the Dublin docks and my future was uncertain in a place where
fortunes are won or lost on the turning of a card.

I personally think it was easily as good as GF2, and has been
consistently underrated.
I think 1974 was the greatest year in film history, especially for male
actors.
The two films mentioned above--Hackman, Pacino, Deniro. Nicholson in
Chinatown. Hoffman in Lenny, And the winner was....Art Carney in Harry and
Tonto!
Hackman was even nominated, probably because he had won recently (1971--The
French Connection)
PS: Let's not forget John Cazale in The Conversation. The man has the
greatest short resume in Hollywood history:
The Godfather
Godfather II
The Conversation
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
That's it--no other feature films (he appeared in one short in the early
60s) , then he died.
JFC.
PPS: At the other extreme, Mel Brooks pulled off his amazing double that
year, too: Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, both 1974.

I liked it cuz it had the chick from Laverne and Shirley in it, back when
she was hot.

Chic, it doesn't matter what you do, (sniiiff), you're always gonna smell
like fish.
(This is a line from a gambling movie, Hard Times. Chic is the name of a
man, who just got sharked and owns an oyster fishery. It has nothing to
do with women or their vaginas)

Think there was a Dirty Harry movie that year.
The basketball movie.
