He wasn't supposed to be anything else. It has nothing to do with
liking his music, none of which I personally have.

Shit, I'm his age and grew up in the Twin Cities. I found his music (and
that of his proteges) consistently irritating and nearly inescapable, and I
avoided the radio stations that played it when I could.

That said, I could never say he wasn't influentual, and his Superbowl
performance was pretty damn good. Apparently he learned to play guitar
after I left MN.

Still, haterz gonna hate.

39 albums. Concerts that would go on for three hours or more. Countless bootleg and live concert albums. A vault of music and recordings that will take more than a generation to explore. As soon as a business person starts to handle his portfolio you'll be hearing Prince tunes so often you won't even know it.

Well, I hope at least you now can say you've listened to an entire Prince song when you say you don't like it. That doesn't sound so ignorant as "I never listened to it AND I don't like it."

You can appreciate someone's talent without liking the choice of songs. The man could write, play and sing very well. I was not a fan but I can see why people were. To me most Pop music is too formulaic and produced to sell. Nothing wrong with cashing in. Hell look at the Kardashians, we are a society where the lowest common denominator sets the tone.

Country music lost me years ago when it went pop, but Merle Haggard's death affected me more than that of Prince.

Here's a FB fer ya:

Journalist Nik Cohn described him as "rock's greatest ever natural talent".[172] His singing abilities encompassed a wide range from falsetto to baritone and rapid, seemingly effortless shifts of register.[173] In addition to this, Prince was renowned as a multi-instrumentalist.[174][175] He was considered a guitar virtuoso and a master of drums, percussion, bass, keyboards, and synthesizer.[176] On his first five albums, he played nearly all the instruments.[177] The precise number of instruments he was capable of playing remains obscure. On his debut album, he was credited with having played 27 instruments,[178] which based on the album credits included various types of bass, keyboard and synthesizer in the total.[179] When asked during a television interview by Dick Clark how many instruments he could play, he responded, "Thousands."[180]

Thousands! Get it? And you who can barely play the radio. GMAFB!

Sinatra's death affected me. As for Music v. Entertainment, it's music & song if you listen to it over a radio. When Sinatra could stand still - in a suit - on a stage, and capture the audience with just his voice, that's music & song. I believe it was James Brown that started the 'movement' on stage. Since him, they 'play' at full volume (who knows if their voice is any good), then smash their guitars on a burning stage and call it music.

I didn't make it all the way through the song. I did get about half-way
though, which I think is a record for me. To me Prince was an oddity,
more about exhibitionism than good music. To me it sounds manufactured.
Maybe it's partially a cultural thing, but I never got the appeal.

I was getting sick and tired of the 24/7 over the top coverage on TV
painting him as the greatest musician ever when he was nothing of the
sort. I get that he fought a good fight for the rights of musicians but
c'mon, his music was ordinary at best. I hope it's safe to turn CNN on
now so I can go back to watching U.S. Primary coverage 24/7 :>)

Well that's gonna be part of the problem right there. Stop watching TV
24/7. All I saw yesterday was a note on a Twitter feed. That's it. And
then articles in today's papers that I chose not to read. I know who
he is, after all.

He did pop, but when pop artists get at least some of their stuff
played on the alternative stations, it's clear that they have
something more going for them. I wasn't a fan, but it's beyond dispute
that he had exceptional musical talent. He was hardly overrated. Even
if I didn't like most of his music, I'm also very interested in the
technical side of music, and I was very impressed in that context. But
I did like one of his songs...

Madonna recalls in a documentary meeting Prince backstage at one of her

advance. I always felt after that his overt sexuality onstage was
compensation for someone who in life was sexually repressed.

Sinatra was the man for sure. Strangers in the night was the dance my wife and i did at our wedding.

Its hard to explain how a celebrity death can affect you. One recent one that made me think was Glenn Frey. I watched the Eagles documentary "History of the Eagles" not long before he died. I almost wish I hadn't because Frey came off as a huge dickwad and actually made me like his music less. He can off as petty and greedy.

My kid had a 5-dick changer in his trunk. Now we just "plug" in our iPhone (which is a computer that makes phone calls and acts as a Walkman). His car 'electronically' senses his phone and he can select his songs on his car screen.
