"Nick the Greek escorted Albert Einstein during the latter’s trip to
Las Vegas in the 1950s. Everywhere they went, he introduced the great
physicist as “This is Lil’ Al from Princeton. He controls a lot of the
numbers action around New Jersey.” Einstein couldn’t help but chuckle.
It has been said that the Greek broke even when he died, having won
$500 million in his life time while losing $500 million. No one before
or since can match this record especially if you adjust the numbers to
account for inflation.
He was an original, the like of which we many never see again.
During his time, Nicholas Dandolos played against the greatest poker
players of his time and more often than not dominated them – this
despite the fact that he lost to Johnny Moss in that legendary
marathon game in which after 5 months of play (and without ever
sleeping – the Greek had a sleeping disorder) where he lost at least a
million dollars, Dandolos concluded with the historic statement, “Mr.
Moss, I have to let you go.”
