Yes, well controlled Bipolar Disorder.

I know tact and massaging the egos of others is one of my weak points.
I'm hoping the facts will sink in. In 30 years the united States went
from having a six million dollar tyrade deficit with China to a 342
BILLION dollar trade deficit, which is essentailly the U.S. handing
China a bunch of money!! And it all came out of stupid United
Statesian consumers! YOU!! I stopped spending my $$ at MalWart years
ago.

Talk about the issues Bryan. Not the people. You can learn a lot from
Bernie Sanders, whi in his intro in the 1st Dem debate didn't talk
about himself at all, only the issues!! Hard for a person with
unconmtrolled (no therapy) Narcissistic Personality Disorder to do, I
know.

Um, John? Only a handful of U.S. consumers are here at
rec.food.cooking to see the information. We've already
seen it, and if people here haven't stoped shopping at
Walmart, no amount of repetition will change their minds.

Let it go, really.

The level of stupidity you trot out here daily is simply stunning.

Good information from the Fed:

https://www.minneapolisfed.org/publications/fedgazette/the-walmart-effect-poison-or-antidote-for-local-communities

Given the terror that Wal-Mart is purported to inflict on communities,
the fedgazette's findings of the firm's economic influence are almost
mundane. Despite its kill-them-all reputation, Wal-Mart is not the
threat that many fear, at least in terms of economic benchmarks commonly
associated with healthy, growing communities.

Not my favorite aspect of it by a long shot, that and all the trillions
of corporate cash being horded offshore.

And that inversion Burger King did with Tim Horton's to get the
improbably lower Canadian corporate tax rate sucks big time.

Some article:
Economist Brink Lindsey of the Cato Institute sees it another way. "I
think Wal-Mart is good for America," he says. "Wal-Mart is doing what
the American economy is all about, which is producing things consumers
want to buy … offering consumers a wide range of goods at rock-bottom
prices. It is meeting the market test."

Walmart is easy pickins. Think about it. Two of the Waltons rank
among the top ten richest people in the world and it's all thanks to
Sam, an honest guy who did the right thing by his employees and
customers. He'd be rolling over in his grave if he knew the
shenanigans being played with his employees today. $9 hr is a total
farce, as will the $12 be if or when it is finally reached. Do the
math. If you have no assets or savings to dip into, can you live on
that?

Do the math on a multiplier effect from a 15$/hr. minimum wage.

That reverberates through the economy and suddenly every basic good or
service costs 40-50% more.

Have you _ever_ studied basic microeconomics?

Ever?

My God.

Live? Doubt it. Survive? Yes, if you are living with mom. That may
not be such a bad wage for a high school kid, but it is not a living
wage. Nor can a large retailer expect to staff their stores with high
school kids.

WalMart is always the easy target, but most all retailers fit into the
same situation. The solution though, is higher prices. Go back to 1960
when we had full service department stores with real sales people. They
were paid a better wage, they had people that could assist you and had
knowledge of the items they sold. From my memory, it was early 1960s
that K Mart and a few now defunct others changed to the lower price
format we see today. Shoppers voted with their dollars and flocked to
them putting the department stores out of business.

With some exceptions, the majority of the people say they want to see
the help paid more, yet they still look for the lowest possible price.
Yes, I only want my goods made in the USA, but I only want to pay China
prices.

OB food- Can anyone recommend a good wine to go with my dollar menu burger?

Or it's a second job, supplemental income in retirement, etc.

Lotsa options there beyond your example.

Depends on how one lives, how many wage earners are in the family, etc.

And yet they manage too with both younger and older employees.

No it is NOT!

That raises the cost of basic goods and services for ALL, but it hits
the poor the hardest.

They did? I worked part time in a department store. They paid a little
more than minimum wage. Most of the staff were part time, because if
people worked more than 24 hours in a week they were eligible for the
mediocre benefits.

The better stores had both full and part time help. Some of the sales
people made a decent wage with added commissions. My neighbor worked
for Sears and made enough to buy a modest house, used car, support a
bunch of kids. Typical retail wages don't do that any more.

Better wage? Heck, I worked in one of those dept stores - for a buck an hour. That was the minimum and ppl with 25 yrs service made the same.

True, but they are not totally comparable. Perhaps a cashier, but many
of the other jobs are closer to warehouse than retail clerk on the sales
floor.

Both my kids worked for a local retail chain when they were in high

Starting is still $17, iirc.

Costco benefits from a much smaller work force - try finding a sales
associate or floor worker and you'll see.

They assign more tasks to less people, then pay up for retention which
means less re-training and churn.

It's a fine model.

But it's a serve yourself warehouse model.

So the company makes less profit, which is reflected on Wall Street.
How rich should the individual Walton family members be when they die?

You know by this time that Walmart is positioning itself to give
Amazon some healthy online competition, so you can conclude that also

How rich should anyone be? It is a moral/ethical question as much as an
economic one. What is well known is that corporate CEOs in general are
making far more than their employees compared to 30 years ago. They are
doing nothing more to earn it.
