How about Europe? I bet they are a large consumer too.

America may be first, but I'd guess Europe, then Japan are not far
behind. We have far more "stuff" than people living in the rest of the
world.

Now that you raised the question of how much we consume, what do you
suggest we do to bring us in line with the rest of the world? Restrict
what we buy? Restrict what we eat? How much we travel?

We were fortunate to be born to a family here as opposed to a third
world country, but I don't think we have to feel guilty about it. We've
tried to help other countries to raise there standards of living, but
that is not easy. Some of those country's economy is based on our
consumerism as we buy the resources they have. In some (many) cases the
citizens of those countries are exploited by their own government.

Stop commuting to those jobs that create innovation and new miracle drugs.
Stop working as much, and use the savings we achieve by stop helping people
in other countries overcome their adversities.

"...when countries are corrupt they can't collect enough taxes to get
the good institutions they need to escape the poverty trap..."

Yeah of course that's the answer - they need to tax their way to prosperity!

<smacks forehead>

Cuz it's all about collectivism, right...

You need to go back into orbit, statist.

And the Obamabot quote of the presentation:

"You should have abetter idea of what you owe your individual success
too, which is not so much your own hard work or fine mind, but the
broader society you live in which was produced over centuries and which
you now draw benefit from unknowingly..."

<BARF!>

This kind of collectivist swill, this Marxist veneration of the state,
institutions (but not religion of course), diminution of the
individual's efforts and blame shifting to resources and the fucking
tsetse fly is a steaming pile of rhetorical self-loathing.

Very much your charter.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_School_of_Life

The School of Life was founded by philosopher Alain de Botton[2] and
Sophie Howarth, a former curator from Tate Modern, in collaboration with
a number of writers, artists and educators.

On Sunday mornings The School of Life hosts secular sermons in which
cultural figures are invited to give their opinion about 'what values we
should live by today'.[7][dead link] These theatrical events are usually
held at Conway Hall in London. Past preachers have included Tom
Hodgkinson on Loving Your Neighbour, Geoff Dyer on Punctuality, Sam
Roddick on Seduction and Alain de Botton on Pessimism.[8] The Financial
Times described the sermons as being 'hedged about with all sorts of
ironic paraphernalia, designed to reassure the trendy young audience
that they are not about to be harangued by a religious zealot'.[9]

The School operates a psychotherapy service run by Professor Brett Kahr,
one of Britain’s foremost psychotherapists.

The service is described as offering clients 'a fascinating and valuable
tour of your own psyche'[11] and aims to counter the stigma often
associated with mental health.

I don't think that's true, do you have a citation? I'd guess that
China and India each create more waste/pollution. The US makes a
mighty effort to limit and clean up its pollution through several
policing agencies, no other country does anything to curtail their
pollution... Mexico is a huge offender regarding pollution too.

That was unmitigated propaganda.

A pastiche of par-truths with the fallacious conclusion that personal
achievement must always take a backseat to the collective that precedes it.

As if somehow, in the Obamaverse, individual creativity and
accomplishment isn't to be lauded, rather it must be diminished because
some else built the highways we use.

It's sophist neo-Marxist BULLSHIT of the worst kind.

This sort of thing is not uncommon amongst Canucks.

There is a palpable 'little brother' syndrome going on there and it
boils forth in spite such as that.

Meanwhile, by realistic measure, their nation is a major resources train
wreck in the making, so understand that when it comes to pollution and
environmental despoliation Canadia is at best a second tier disaster.

I guess it makes them feel better to blame us, so it always goes.

Oh please don't ruin a good whine by calling for a solution!

But since you asked:

June 8, 2015
Stanford engineers develop state-by-state plan to convert U.S. to 100%

Why the heck would we want to be in the business of running a waterway
in some god-forsaken land? Getting rid of the thing was a smart move.

There are some things in my life that I'd like to get rid of to simplify
my life. Not my wife though. Heck I'd even get rid of my guitars first.
Well, the first would be that darn cat. Hee hee.

I think any silly survey can be made to appear the norm by a complicit
media.

"...the publication presents the results of standardized tests given to
more than 29,000 eighth-grade students across the U.S. last year."

That's out of roughly 4 million, sheesh.
