I pulled this out of an Elizabeth Bradley book and supplimented it
with a number of other charts in other books to make it more
complete. If anyone has anything to add, I'd be interested in it.

Cindy, I would just like to remind all that accepting a chart as a source
for conversions is a delicate/dangerous approach. The chart is intended
to make color comparisons that are workable in the context of the
design. They are not intended to be close/exact matches of various
brands. So if the conversion chart is intended for a specific design
keep this in mind and be a ware that the colors may not be very close in
actuallity, but happen to look good in "this" design.

This conversion chart is partially complete. It is guide for
substituting one brand of yarn for another. Use the
conversion guide as a rough guide. It is intended to provide
approximate, not exact, replacements for yarns. It is important
to understand the source for each set of conversions. For
this reason, the chart contains the source for each set of
conversions. There are subtle differences in the color ranges
for each set of yarns. For example, the shades of Paternayan
are brighter than those of Elizabeth Bradley. Using one yarn type
for all elements in a piece may simplify color choices.

WARNING:
--------------

All shade (color) matches are approximate and
not exact. Use your own judgment when substituting
one brand of yarn for another.

Deborah Dawn Johnson <djoh...@nova.umuc.edu> cautions:

Part of the pleasure in needlework design is selecting the shades.
Feel free to experiment with your own shadings. Don't be
constrained by the suggested shadings. Place the chosen
wools next to each other to see how they work
together. Sometimes one color may be indistinguishable
from another close up but may read well from a distance.
This is particularly true of colors in the same range.
Other times, one color may appear to be different from
another when examined in the hand but indistinguishable
when stitched. This is especially true for dark colors.

Consider the ultimate setting of the piece before
choosing the colors. Are the colors compatible with
the other furnishings in the room? Is the color one
that you like or do you find it hideous. Don't reject
a color just because you think it is garish. Used in
small amounts it may give punch to the piece. Remember
that the same color appears different when it is placed
next to different colors.

By all means, use your own shades. For
example, some needleworkers find black (noir) or
white (blanc) to be too harsh. They may substitute
other colors. For example, for black they may substitute
charcoal or dark brown, dark green, dark blue. For
white they may substitute an off-white with a tinge of
brown, yellow, pink, gray, blue etc.

Acknowledgments

The chart is based on the initial work of Cindy LaFleur
(CLAFLEUR.2...@chemistry.watstar.uwaterloo.ca).
She used the conversion chart from the Elizabeth Bradley book
"Victorian Needlepoint". I've augmented the list with the chart
from Candace Behouth's "Flowers, Birds, and Unicorns: Medieval
Needlepoint."

Paterna and Paternayan yarns
--------------
There is some confusion between the names Paterna and Paternayan.
The belief is that they are different and have different numbers,
Furthermore,
- Paterna cannot be divided because it is a thinner
- Paternayan is a tapestry wool and comes 3-1 so you must divide each
strand (like floss).

This matched part of the impression of staff at my local needlepoint
shop. I managed to change that impression when I showed a sample
Paterna yarn to them with a number 604. The yarn appeared to be
a three-stranded Persian yarn. The staff automatically said that
the numbers of Paterna yarn were not the same as those of Paternayan. But the
yarn was the identical color to yarn Paternayan 604.

The yarn known as Paternayan in the USA and Canada is known as PATERNA
in the UK. The wool is manufactured in England by M P Stonehouse and
distributed by The Craft Collection Limited in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

The Paterna(yan) yarn is a three strand Persian yarn. One strand in
equivalent to crewel wool. For coverage, use two strands on 12
count canvas. Use two or three strands on 10 mesh. (I always
use two strands, since it is too difficult to force three through
the holes.); on 7 or 8 mesh use four strands. Separate the strands
before combining them. You can blend colours to form a tweeding
or for more sophisticated shading.

Here are two quotes from the booklet that came with my Ehrman kit
for a King Charles Spaniel by Candace Behouth copyright 1990, (reissued
in 1995).

<< First quote>>
For many years M P Stonehouse have exclusively spun this yarn
(referring to Paterna or Paternayan yarn) throughout North Ameerica
and more recently in the United Kingdom and European market in all 417
glorious shades from leading specialist needlwork shops and stores.

<< Second quote>>
Paterna the finest Persian Yarn... ... choose from over 400 colors

In 1916 Harry and Karnig Paternaya arrived in New York with an
extraordinary knowledge of oriental Rugs and Tapestries. To
proactive their specialist trade they needed to develop a pure
wool yarn of superior quality, durability and lustrous colours
they had known in their homeland. The result of their efforts was
Paterna Persian Yarn (also called Paternayan).

--------------
The format of the chart
--------------

A comma (,) separates the six fields in each row of the chart.
The first line in the table attaches labels to the fields,
indicating their order. Each entry in the chart consists of
the yarns in the order, followed by the source
Paterna(yan), DMC, Anchor, Elizabeth Bradley, Appleton, and source

The source may take on one of three values (EB, LF, or CB)
EB - the Elizabeth Bradley conversion chart. The conversion
chart gives equivalents or close equivalents to the range of
Elizabeth Bradley wool.
CB- the Candace Behouth conversion chart as entered by Mark Tapia.
The conversion chart gives equivalents or close equivalents to
Appleton wool.
LF - additional conversions entered by Cindy LaFleur from her books.
The conversion chart principally gives the Paterna(yan) equivalent
of DMC wool.

Although the EB and LF sources cover distinct ranges of wool, the
CB source may offer different choices from LF.

You can import the data into a spread sheet to do your own searching.
Just remember to specify that the fields are delimited by commas.
You can also use examine the table with an editor.

To simplify the searching, all strictly numeric yarn codes (e.g.
Appleton 304) are preceded by an alphabetic code indicating the
manufacturer. Since Elizabeth Bradley colors consist of a capital
alphabetic letter followed by either 1 or two digits (e.g. F11), .
they do not contain a yarn code.

All other yarns begin with an alphabetic prefix indicating the
manufacturer.

Pa592,DMC7596,,,,LF
The first source (CB) contains approximate equivalents for all yarns but
Elizabeth Bradley. If you use this choice, select DMC 7861.
The second line contains an optional DMC color - 7596.

If there is no approximate equivalent of the color, or it has
not yet been entered, the entry is blank. This occurs in the LF
entry above for the Anchor, Elizabeth Bradley, and Appleton wool
ranges.

For example, the chart indicates that to Paterna(yan) 213, there is
no Anchor, Elizabeth Bradley, or Appleton equivalent.
However DMC7715 is a match for PA 213, as the following line
indicates:
Pa213,DMC7715,,,LF
The source is Cindy LaFleur.

An asterisk (*) indicates an rough color match.
For example, Pa202* indicates the standard Pa(202). Thus
the following line in the table
Pa202*,DMC7273,An398,H9,Ap964
Indicates that there are exact matches between the DMC, Anchor,
Elizabeth Bradley, and Appleton colors, but that Paterna(yan)
only has an approximate match (namely Pa202).
