The week-long artillery bombardment and suicidal infantry frontal
assault into German machine guns were intended to allow horse cavalry
to get behind and cut off the German trench lines. The cavalry did
break through but was too weak and disorganized to be effective.

disaster by being sent to Palestine, where he invented motorized
Blitzkrieg.
