Hi! I've got an Evinrude 50HP (E50TLD) that has started smoking a lot over
the last two or three outings, i.e. the last two weeks or so. It starts OK
and seems to run OK; I don't think I'm seeing any power loss. Just clouds
of oily blue smoke and oil in the water. Needless to say, oil consumption
is up.

The eariliest I can get it looked at by the Evinrude dealer near where the
boat lives is September 22. What can I do in the meantime to see if it's
just something simple?

Reviewing an earlier thread about excessive smoke from outboards, I"ve
added checking the fuel line from the tank to my to-do list. What else
should I add?

The most common cause of over oiling is an airleak in the
fuel system. Check your hoses, hose fittings and clamps
carefully.

Also make sure that the engine is warming up enough. If you
can hold your hand on top of the cylinder head for more than
2 seconds, you'll need to replace the thermostat.

You can also remove the front air silencer cover and make
sure the carbs are not flooding.

If it must smoke, encourage it to use a low-tar brand -- less harmful for
its health.

LOL... check out OMC's new product lines for the new "OilPatch". When applied
to the gas tank, it's guaranteed to produce less oil burn. :-)

I think someone hit it already. Most likely an air leak. My Dad's VRO on a long
ago GW had this problem. It wasn't an expensive fix, as I recall..

Bill's point about airleaks in the fuel line is very valid. I had
some minor (at least I considered them so) leaks in the fuel line
feeding the fuel pump. The pump is a combination fuel and oil pump
and it's rate of pumping is determined by the amount of fuel being
used by the carbs and whether or not it's getting enough fuel. With
airleaks the diaphram in the pump could pump twice as fast in order to
supply enough fuel to the carbs. When it does this it pumps twice as
much oil than it did before. Had this problem and fixing the fuel
line solved it.

Good luck

Try nicorette, it worked well for my wife when she was smoking too much.

Thanks to you all, both for the humor and the actual advice. Since I'm just
a bit chicken to go messing with the pump and the fuel line, I'll let the
dealer handle this one. Good education, though.

Bill,
maybe you can help, or direct me to a specific forum for this:
--------------------

My sailboat kicker is a 6hp Evinrude (1976). No auto oiling, and very simple
electrics (rope start- no alternator, or cdi)

The motor gets used year-round two or three times a week, so fuel stays
fresh, engine gets flushed often and stays clean.

Heavy fuel/oil film on water at idle was first symptom of trouble. Later,
performance went bad at idle, then high end.

1- I found a hole in fuel pump diaphragm- installed new pump.
2- Installed carb kit with new plastic float to replace old cork float.
3- Compression *thumb on hole* tests okay on both cylinders.
4- Engine temp seems to be same as ever (water pump okay)

Now-
Engine will start and idle fairly well, if not perfect. Sometimes still
floods and dies.
Main trouble- no high end power. Motor revs up a little, but seems to either
starve or flood. Some missing, as if electrics not good (or air in fuel?)
I tried squeezing syphon bulb while at WOT, it's firm and doesn't affect RPM's.

Plugs are not new, but not suspect, although they get black and wet when
engine stalls, as expected. I clean them with solvent and air pressure each
time I take motor off the boat for more troubleshooting. (Wearing me down it
is).

I reinstalled the old float, but saw no big change, so put the new one back
in.
(I don't have a float guage- just eyballed it at a level setting upside down)

My next move is to check points, but I don't think this has changed
drastically in past few weeks to cause such a change from running great to
running lousy.

(Taking it to *the shop* is not an option)

Thanks for help
Reg
