1997 White Water Rodeo World Championship Results

The 1997 White Water Rodeo World Championships were held this past
weekend, Sept. 5,6,7 on the Rocher Fendu section of the Ottawa River
in Canada. A rather cool, wet weekend didn't dampen the spirits of the
paddling community and a good time was had by all. The locals fared
very well taking three of the world champion titles.
For all classes except squirt, the preliminary round consisted of two
components, hole riding (counting for 65%) and freestyle through a
rapid (counting for 65%). Furthermore, in the freestyle the technical
score was worth 50% and the style score was worth 50%. Due to all
these percents, the "total score" had to be expressed as a rational
number (i.e. fraction, i.e. decimal, i.e. percent). The finals were
just hole riding and so we could report raw scores.
The men's kayak final was particularly exciting as local favourite Ken
Whiting ended up in first place after the first ride. He then went on
to better his own leading score with his second run. With only two
boaters left with a chance to beat him, Eric Jackson pulled off a
clutch, awesome ride. Everyone waited for the score to be tabulated
and posted. It wasn't enough to knock Ken out of first but was good
enough for second place. Special mention goes to Shane Benedict who
won both the hole riding and freestyle through a rapid events in the
preliminary round.
The Worlds were dedicated to the memory of Chuck Kern. A memorial was
held prior to the event at the Chutes de Plaisance on the Petite
Nation river in Quebec, the last hole ride of the competition was
Chuck's (a minute of silence) and at the medal ceremony, the squirt
boat medalists left the top spot on the podium empty for him.
