Today, I pulled off the lid to a street sewer. I just
used a long shaft with a small hook. It wasn't very
difficult. But I thought about it and of course there
must be some real gear to it.

Here are some tools craft made in Sweden! The URL [1]
looks goofy but it works. I think the "brunnskrok för
gråjärnslock" would have worked in this case. (Literal
translation "well hook for gray iron lid".)

Apparently the tool name is "manhole hook" in English.
Here are two other versions with more of an industrial
polish. [2]

And here [3], possibly the "professional" one as
super expensive: 1499 SEK or ~($171, £135, or €154).

Quote from the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981)
Indiana Jones move:

Belloq: How odd that it should end this way for us,
after so many stimulating encounters. I almost
regret it. Where shall I find a new adversary
so close to my own level?

Jones: Try the local sewer.

The local electric utility has started using a dolly. Long handle,
then wheels, with a couple foot long piece sticking out the front with
a hook on it. Hook the cover, lean back on the handle, the cover
comes up, and you can wheel it out of the way.

Why did you remove the sewer cover? Are you a utility worker authorized to do that?

What has it got to do with bicycling?

Cheers

504.5 USD. Not cheap to remove a lid!

Grainger are a very expensive supplier, unless you're doing large
volume with them. ComEd aren't paying that price. Even if they were,
it's cheaper than a back injury.

Right around the sewer a hole had started to
emerge so I thought maybe there was a leak and
the water had undermined it from below.
But when I looked down there was no water
around the pipe.

Next to this place is a huge construction site
where they have done pile-driving and possibly
the damage had occurred that way. Anyway I put
small stones and pebbles around to get away
with the hole.

No, I'm all for quality gear. Especially when
I own it :)
