A lot of people seem to have the problem these
days on their 1S bikes, that when they pedal
nothing happens and then it suddenly kicks in
an unpleasant way.

Is it the old greese that has turned stiff in
the cold?

Just pick apart, clean, oil everything, greese
the bearings, and it will work again,
God willing?

In particular, is it the roller clutch that
doesn't instantly roll over?

Possibly. If yours has an oil port, oil it.

Any oil in particular given the winter?

Will the stiff greese interfere or on the
contrary regain some of its former freshness
from the new oil?

Unless you know that it was rebuilt within a year or two,
the lubricant is probably both dried and dirty. Oil will
replenish it.
Use whatever you have handy between sewing machine oil and
motor oil; it's not a viscosity-critical application.
