Ho Hum! Just another of many articles I could be posting to this newsgroup
about how mountain bikers and other assholes are despoiling wilderness
trails. But citations are not nearly enough. How about 20 years in prison
for their depredations. After all, there is very little wilderness left and
no shortage of human scum that wants nothing more than to wreck and destroy.

Boulder's Scott Jurek, one of the most
accomplished ultramarathoners, broke the
supported speed record for the 2,189-mile
Appalachian Trail. (Provided by the Luis Escobar)

When Boulder ultra-running legend Scott Jurek
clambered to the top of Maine's Mount Katahdin
a spectacular, record-setting 46 days, 8 hours, 7
minutes after starting the 2,180-mile traverse of
the Appalachian Trail rangers from Baxter State Park were prepared.

But they were not celebrating. They were writing citations.

The champagne that spilled: littering. Sipping
that champagne: alcohol violation. More than 12
people hiking together: another rule violation.
Also, his film crew was cited for violating the
rules of their permit by recording video on the summit.

At first blush, the tickets issued June 12 seem a
mean-spirited response to Jurek's impressive feat of endurance.

But the issue goes much deeper, reflecting a
growing unease with how new-school recreation
like ultra-running, BASE jumping, peak-bagging,
group clinics and stand-up paddling fits inside
traditional perspectives on how Americans use their protected wildlands.

Modern-day adventurers are not always the lonely,
Thoreau-inspired hiker ambling through the woods
a reflective approach that for decades has been
promoted as the only way to truly appreciate
unspoiled lands. Yes, the new adventurers, like
their predecessors, briefly are escaping their hectic, industrial lives.

But they are using new tools, pursuing adrenaline
surges and often trumpeting their play in online photos and videos.

Jensen Bissell is the director of the
private-trust- funded Baxter State Park, which
has a reputation for fiercely protecting the
quiet wilderness experience. He turned to
Facebook to explain his reasoning for citing
Jurek, arguing the ultra-runner's sponsors
displayed on his headband and amply logoed
support van should not be angling for
commercial gain inside Maine's largest parcel of wilderness.

"Corporate events," he wrote, "have no place in
the park and are incongruous with the park's
mission of resource protection, the appreciation
of nature and the respect of the experience of others in the park."

Mountain bikes have wheels. Wheels are for roads.

Trails are for walking. What’s the matter? Can’t walk?

But I guess the Greater One just didn't read the whole thing before he
posted it as he sort of missed the part where the park manager tells
the guy to get out of the park.

Can you imagine, just like Dolan, the park didn't want any flamboyant
blokes mucking up their park. With one big difference. It is THIER
park. The Great One wants to bar people from OUR park.

Nice try Doodles old chap.
Unfortunately a pratfall rather than a victory dance, but do keep
trying. What is that they say? Faint heart never won fair lady?

Keep you nose to the grindstone old chap and perhaps one day you will
prosper.

As an aside, I never asked. Fair ladies are your cup of tea, I hope?

You prove once again that you don’t know how to read. It is all one piece.
No contradictions at all.

Parks are managed by managers - period! If only all land managers were as
smart and correct as these.

Ah Doodles, there you go slither and sliding around the meaning. Or
didn't you read the part about, "Jensen Bissell is the director of the

Apparently, just as is the of the word "bicycle" you don't understand
the word "private".

If you had the intelligence of a gnat, or were bright enough to think
before you open your mouth you might have figured out that "the park
was established by 28 donations of land, in trust, from park donor
Percival P. Baxter between the years of 1931 and 1962, eventually
creating a park of over 200,000 acres in size. Baxter Park is not part
of the Maine State Park system. Sole governance is provided by the
Baxter State Park Authority".

You see, Dooley, Baxter Park is private property and just like your
front lawn, the owner can do what he wants there, make any law he
wants.

The only question is, can you really be that stupid?

It is a State Park.

Apparently you do no understand the word "State".

Only an Eastern state like Maine could be this fucked up. Even so, why is
there a State Park Authority? The State must somehow be involved.

I doubt that is the case. I will want a complete explanation of the
relationship between any private property owners and the State. Think you
are up to explaining it? Or are you just a piss pot and a bullshitter?
