Asking For Suggestion On Hybrid Bike To Purchase, Please ?

Hello all,

Wish I could take up biking again, but at my age now, and with my back
problems out of the question.

But my son, 40 yrs of age, now that his kid is 5 yrs old, would like to
get a bike so they all can go out together.

Would like to help him decide on one, and since it has been so many year
since I've looked at new bikes, would appreciate some help, please:

Have settled on a "Hybrid" style as probably suiting his needs,
capabilities, and where he would be using it as best.

Price range should be limited to $ 400 to $ 450.

Have seen the Raleigh Hybrid called the Detour.
Don't remember which one I saw; if it was the 2.5, 3.5, or 4.5 model

Anyway, to my non-technical mind, it looked "pretty nice".
Thought the shifting was smooth, and easy to do.
Not too heavy.

What do you think of this series ?

The 2.5 a reasonable one to go for, or should
we (definitely) consider the 3.5 ?

Components a decent quality ?
etc. ?

Which other brands and models in this price range should we definitely
look at also ?

Any definite opinion on the "best bet" in my price range ?
