I'm a UPS driver. How much did they pay?

I like NASCAR. I don't really have a favorite driver. It was probably a
toss-up between Gordon and Earnhardt, but didn't hate or love either.

I am NOT a Ford fan, however. Now my company is sponsoring a stinking Ford.
Jarrett I have nothing against. I do find myself smiling to myself when he
wins, for no good reason. I guess because I, too, drive a package car. <grin>
So far, UPS is getting its money's worth in their first season as a sponsor.

How much does a typical main sponsor pay a team? I was guessing somewhere
between 20 and 40 million for a season?

Last weekend we had a grand opening of a new UPS center in Fort
Collins/Loveland CO, and they had a #88 stock car there. The promo people said
it was the car that took 5th at Darlington last year, of course in Dale's old
colors. That's all those people do--take that car around the country. They
also had a full size dummy car with a video game built into it. Pretty neat.
I got it up to 204 mph before I hit the wall.

My package car tends to be a little tight in the corners. I deliver in the
Colorado mountains, so I not only turn left, but right as well.

Up until this year, $10M was enough to get you top billing on pretty
much any car in the field. That ante appears to have been upped
somewhat, with the Pfizer and UPS sponsorships rumoured to be in the
range of $15-$18M.

The problem [1] is that there seems to be a drastic shortage of sponsors
willing to pay that much, so you'll end up with only 3 or 4 teams with
$15M+ sponsorships, followed by about another 15-20 with $8-$10M, and
maybe 15 pulling down $4-$8M. Then you have a handful who can't find any
sponsors at all.

I think the UPS sponsorship was unprecedented [2] in scale when
announced, but still peanuts to the $60M Philip Morris pays Ferrari, or
the $90M Mercedes spends on its F1 engine program.

bp

[1] If you believe that inequities in sponsorship income is bad. I
don't.
[2] For NASCAR.

Probably closer to 15 million for the top teams. But UPS might be spending that
much, including advertising during a race (this race is brought to you by UPS).

I have the same problem with my snow blower. I've tried changing air pressure,
taking wedge out, putting it in, to no avail. Thank God my neighborhood racing
association has no restrictor plate rules, so I get a full 10 hp out of it.

UPS is paying Robert Yates Racing $16,000,000/year.
A typical sponsorship is half that.

You wear the same ensemble every weekday. Brown shirt, brown pants(long

Don't be so quick to criticize The Post Office there, my friend. While
it is true that they're a gum'mint agency, at least they take the
responsibility to operate under a balanced budget and not just ask us
to print them some more money if they can't make ends meet. The USPS
is a functional -business- (read "profit making") that just happens to
be operated by the gum'mint.

I've heard they want to make service cuts and raise rates again, but
I think that's all intended to keep them from operating at a loss.
Sheesh, we're -killing- them with e-mail, on-line banking and the
thousands of on-line greeting card sites out there. Is it any wonder
their total volume of business is decreasing every year? If you
really think about it, who -needs- Saturday mail delivery?

It's always amazed me that for $.35 I can send something across the
country and have it arrive (usually) within a couple of days.

No Saturday mail just means more fliers on Friday/Monday.

It makes me wonder, you know? They raised postage this year and all the
talk before that increase went into effect was "we're doing SOOOOO well
that we can get by on just a small increase...."

So what was the point of doing THAT? Bullshitting us all like that? Or
are they bullshitting us NOW?

I missed the post your responding to so I'll make a point. The internet has
done more to *increase* the volume of mail than most people imagine. Think of
the millions of packages from Amazon and eBay sellers. All the e-mail,
greeting cards (please), and online banking haven't come close to offsetting
the increases. It's kind of like how the computer was supposed to eliminate
paper. I also might add that the USPS charges very little. No other major
postal service (European, Japanese, ect) charges anywhere near as little.

It's easy to make a profit if you are the only entity allowed by law to deliver
first class mail, and you can raise your rates every year or two.

UPS and FedEx would love to have a piece of that action, and would be more
efficient at it. You ever heard the word "monopoly?"

Here at UPS we have a pretty good benefits package. They even pay for
psychotherapy. Apparently your employer doesn't?

The rates have barely gone up. Why anyone would complain about 34 cents to
send a letter from Florida to Alaska is beyond me.

Actually, in many ways it is a natural monopoly. The only conceivable way of
charging 34 cents a letter is to be able to cover a vast number of customers.
If you are only delivering a letter to a few houses on a block, the costs
would go up enormously. Light mail would cost several dollars a piece. It's
also worth pointing out that nearly every other country, most much, much
smaller geographically, charge considerably more.

Mindless ideology should never replace common sense. However you cut it,
eventually there would be one company delivering nearly all the light mail.

In nearly every area, I support privitization, but in this area it's pretty
much pointless.

I haven't said that they don't do a good job. If you go back in the thread
you'll see that I made a tongue in cheek comment about the poor management that
the UPS driver mentioned and I asked if they were a government entity. Not to go
off on a political slant here but I feel the government is the worst run
business going. And judging by the articles I've read the USPS has its' own
management woes. You are right about the business that has been created by
online shopping. Priority Mail seems to be the most popular choice. I use it
extensively. Plus my postal carrier is cool. He is a gearhead, model builder and
diecast collector:-).

Now that is mindless ideology. By your logic cars would be cheaper if there
was only one dealer in each town and all residents were required by law to
buy from the dealer in their town.

Ever hear of market forces? The Post Office and its monopoly is an
anachronism.

They have gone up almost every year for the last three years. 34 cents is too
much if competition in the marketplace would drive it down. You know about
that, don't you? It's the reason we're the largest economy in the world.

UPS and FedEx already do that with their packages. USPS uses their monopoly
income (first-class mail) to subsidize their package delivery, which IS in
direct competition with the private companies. That's also an unfair
advantage.

>Mindless ideology should never replace common sense. However you cut it,
>eventually there would be one company delivering nearly all the light mail.

I love common sense. There's only one now, and they raise their rates
arbitrarily, and are now threatening reduced service. I would prefer to let
the public decide which to use.

As I've tried to illustrate, for many fuctions mail delivery is a natural
monopoly. It is an unusual situation. There are no simple solutions,
certainly not any that are going to reduce costs by any appreciable amount.
