I have an Alpine head unit w/ CD changer in my '94 and have not altered the
factory harness one whit. Contact Crutchfield (1-800-955-3000) and ask for
an adaptor harness for your '95 Passat (should be the same as '94: ~$5-10)
then give that to the wire-biters that install your new sytem. The place
you buy your new stereo at may even have the adaptor harness you need, but
don't count on it. I have found an abysmal lack of Passat parts at anyplace
I look. I can go into further detail, even how to install it yourself
*easy* if interested

You might try calling Crutchfield and ask for a catalog. They have
nice tables of which radios and speakers fit into which cars. If you
buy a system from them, they supply decent instructions (at least they
did for a Subaru radio I replaced a few years ago) and the right
connectors for many systems. 1-800-955-3000

David,
I have a '95 Passat GLX and replaced the stereo shorty after getting it.
Rather than
going to Crutchfield or another mail order souce though (I am NOT willing to
take my dash apart), I found a very competent local installer who put in a
Clarion
single-CD head unit and Boston Acoustics Rally series seperates speakers. It
was all done with any alterations to the look of the car, and I can remove the
faceplate (which does stick out slightly further than the stock unit) and take
it with me or lock it in the center console. The sound is GREAT-- a combination
I highly recommend. Try going to several sound and installation places, ask
to see demo vehicles, ask about installation warrenties, etc. And the price?
Only about $150 to have all the pieces installed and the installation
warrantied for the life of the car!. Good luck!

I replaced the stock radio in my 95 Passat with a Kenwood 801 head unit. I
didnt neccessarily buy it for the "stealth retraction face plate" but more
for the fact that the face plates was lower profile than most removable
face units. To increase the mounting depth, you need to trim the rear
support bracket back a little to fit most radios. I also installed
separates in the front doors, mounting the tweeter flush in the plastic
corner piece of the front windows. Back speakers are crummy stock and now
free air subs in the rear deck yet. My amplifier is mounted next to the
rear tire under the carpet, so it's all hidden. I never crank it, so heat
isnt much of a problem.
