While replacing the headliner in my '84 Gti I noticed that there are
provisions for a shoulder harness for each outboard passenger of the
rear seat. Can I just go to a junkyard and get a retractor/belt from
the front of another Wabbit and bolt it in? Sure would be nifty...

Hmmm... that's an interesting idea. I never though of those threaded
inserts as shoulder harness holders, but that does make some sense. They
sure are strong. I assumed they were there to aid in the car's manufacture
or something. Anyways, I would think the hardest part, short of finding a
suitable three point belt system (maybe one off the front seats woudl
work...) would be to find a place to put the roller - feeder thing that
takes up the slack when you take off the belt. The two rear luggage trays
seem to be kind of in the way. Might be cool to somehow bypass around them
if you could securely mount the automatic coiler under them on the sides
somehow... Maybe that's what american VW's screwed their seatback clip
studs into? Or maybe if there is a stock VW model equipped with these,
there are special recoiler boxes are mounted up top directly to those
threaded holes you're talking about.

I was thinking the same thing. I was out ripping parts off my '86 GL parts car
and was going to pull the rear shoulder belts. The problem I saw was getting the
belt mounts (in the trunk) through the small slits provided to carry the belts
through. The install could be as bad. My '84 GLi also has the slits to pass the
belts through, but no mounting points on the inside of the pillars. Once again
getting the belts down through the small slits into the trunk would be a chore.
I really don't want to cut the interior in any way. The "guides" for the belts
to run through is too big for these slits. If you do come up with a way, I'd
really appreciate it if you could pass it along.

Good luck and TIA
Verne
