Ours is a Never-Oscar zone. We had a Hallmark movie saved up, so that.
It was the first Picture Perfect Mystery. Meh.

You wanted Jane Fonda instead of Diane Keaton? You're wrong. Anne
Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine cancelled each other out.

Well, it damn sure should have won the Oscar for Best Original Score
tonight. The fact that the musical wallpaper for JOKER won over RISE OF
SKYWALKER is absurd.

I guess the Academy is just tired of handing gold statues to John
Williams at this point.

So I just found out that JOKER composer Hildur Guonadottir is a woman. I
couldn't tell from the name. That explains it. Williams isn't
intersectional enough to win Oscars anymore.

It was his 52nd nomination, and he's already won 5 Oscars. And you're
saying the Academy has a problem with him?

Maybe this years score just wasn't that great. Or original, since he's
been doing Star Wars movie scores for over 40 years.

Ian, you're wrong. The Academy loves awarding a certain type of movie.
Annie Hall was not the typical Oscar award winner. It was a comedy, for
one thing, and a comedy hadn't won top awards in decades.

You're ignorning the true significance of Star Wars, in that it changed
the type of movie studios were willing to finance and distribute to put
all your eggs in one basket and hope a big budget movie will find an
audience and won't sink the studio, even though Star Wars in and of
itself wasn't a big budget movie.

The Academy has never recognized fundamental change taking place.

It's like saying you refuse to watch entertaining television and you'll
watch only Emmy award winners.

No, it's the exact opposite - it's saying awards shows are SHIT,
because they never actually recognize the correct people/projects.

It was actually both. Certainly light years better than the sound
effects they call music in JOKER.

Was Star Wars quality or entertainment? I greatly prefer The Empire
Strikes Back anyway, and dislike a lot of Return of the Jedi, and I've
stayed far far away from all the other movies in the series.

It's never been my favorite movie series.

The Academy has made a lot of bad decisions over the years. Annie Hall
winning four awards partly made up for all those deserving comedies that
lost out to more "important" movies.

The Oscars are a lagging indicator and couldn't spot a trend if it
smacked them in the face. It doesn't matter. It's up to audiences to
reward movies. It chose Star Wars, and thereafter, it was nothing but
blockbusters... none of which will ever win the top awards.

Who cares what wins what if you don't agree.

Let's face it, John Williams couldn't have scored Joker. His overall
style would have made the film into a comedy.

Baloney. Williams' score to WAR OF THE WORLDS was very similar to
JOKER-- which is one of the reasons I rarely listen to it. It's the same
sort of aleatoric, long-tone mood music with no tonal center that JOKER
consisted of.

The converse is certainly not true, however. There's no indication from
her repertoire that Guonadottir could have scored STAR WARS anywhere
near as effectively as Williams.

In any event, I have no idea why Williams ability to score JOKER is even
an issue. It's like you're saying JOKER was going to win no matter who
scored it, and it's just better that Guonadottir did it than Williams.

No, no... his Star Wars scores for all three of the originals was
brilliant. Seen him do a few of them in person, when he performed in
Boston.

But Joker's score wasn't anywhere near Williams signature style. And in
Joker, the score was almost part of the background of the film.

I can't imagine Williams doing that score any more than I can imagine
Elmer Bernstein doing it.

Yes, that's why I call it musical wallpaper. It's more of a sound effect
than a musical score.

> I can't imagine Williams doing that score any more than I can imagine
> Elmer Bernstein doing it.

Williams can indeed turn in stuff like that when he's asked to by the
director. With WAR OF THE WORLDS, he initially was composing it in a
sweeping romantic style (not romantic in the love sense, but in the
sense of the Romantic Era of classical music) with various themes for
the aliens and the main characters, etc. But Spielberg wanted something
more along of the lines of JOKER, with no tonal center, no identifiable
harmonies or themes, and aleatoric in style-- he wanted the whole score
to be 'alien' in nature-- and that's exactly what Williams provided. I
guess it works in the movie, but I can't sit and listen to 90 minutes of
that on its own. It's just not music to me.
