What a fantastic character actor; I'll miss him. The senilty for five
years is a sad way to go.

I barely remember T.H.E. Cat; I think the T didn't stand for anything.
IMDb sez the restaurant owner wasn't in 8 of the 26 episodes. I don't
recall seeing any without him.

It must have been in second run once or twice when I was a kid, and I
caught a few episodes. I'd re-watch it.

I don't think I ever watched T.H.E. Cat but I *do* know that the
initials stood for Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat. One of my friends was a fan
of the show and I remember him telling me that.

It's funny the things you remember....

Thomas Hewitt Edward

A friend of mine has been working on a comic book of the show. :)

Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat.

And the second-best TV series theme tune ever (first being
Route 66's theme).

Funny that the article didn't mention T.H.E. Cat or that
he had been in the soap opera "Secret Storm" as Judy Lewis's
character's husband.

Sad. Especially the Alzheimer's part.

Wonderful actor. I'll have to dig out my Rawhide DVDs to find
his episode to watch again.

Nyssa, who wishes T.H.E. Cat would come out on DVD

Opening titles IN LIVING COLOR:

B&W

Was this one of those shows (like Get Smart) in which the pilot was B&W
but the rest were color?

The series was in color. Bootleg off-air copies are both in color and black and white, mostly black and white. I've got all the episodes. I even posted a link to the color pilot - T.H.E. Cat - T.h.e. Pilot thread.

The first half of the series, about the first 15 episodes, were better, in the quirky sense. You can tell they tried to "normalize" the show for the remaining 10 episodes or so, probably because it wasn't getting the ratings, although it aired after Man from U.N.C.L.E. at the time and its competition was soft (the failed return of The Milton Berle Show and later the retooled failed Phyllis Diller Show on ABC and CBS Friday movies). This is what the night looked like with T.H.E. Cat back then:

At least 9 of the earlier episodes are on Youtube.

Everything you always wanted to know about T.H.E. Cat ... now you know.

Neither had I. It was 1966-67, so maybe it didn't get exported.

Seeing the title, I keep thinking of Cary Grant in "To Catch a Thief",
where his nickname had been "The Cat".

It sounds like the tv show had a similar theme, a previously bad guy now
doing good.

In article <alpine.LNX.2.02.1...@darkstar.example.org>,
Grant wasn't looking to do good. He was just looking to save his own
hide.

The character from "To Catch a Thief" was directly copied into "It Takes
a Thief" as Robert Wagner's father, played by Fred Astaire.

He was always good, in the Sopranos and as a mobster turned vampire in "Innocent Blood." Oddly enough, he still worked despite being ill.
