I watched:

THE ORVILLE: Captain Ed learns that he slept his way to the top and
only got his current job so that he could be eye candy. Meanwhile, John
is discovered to be super smart, so he is suddenly qualified to become
head engineer instead of whatever it is he does on the bridge
now...drive? I guess that means the old engineer is leaving the show
and that John is going to be gone from the bridge...though previews for
next week indicate otherwise. Meanwhile, Bortus eats part of one of his
fellow crewmates. Meanwhile, the space problem of the week is a whole
bunch of hand wavium silliness about 2D space.

THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL: Episodes #2 through #4 of this Amazon series
(I saw the pilot when it was released months ago). Set in the 1950s,
this show tells the story of a budding female standup comic. The pace
is very much like that of a stage play or some 40s/50s films where
everyone speaks at a fast pace and every line they utter is witty. I'm
enjoying this series.

What did you watch?

Longmire (The Netflix) - "Thank You, Victoria" (ep. #6.3). OK, they are
now finally starting to wrap up some storylines, in this - the show's
final season. In this one, the "Chance Gilbert" (Peter Stormare)
storyarc is finally wrapped up (at least, mostly), when he escapes from
custody and Walt and Vic have to go after him.

Gotham - "Things That Go Boom". A pretty good episode that was "dense"
in terms of developments. I'm not even going to try to synopsize it.
But it looks like the three "ditzy dames" are now stuck working for
Sofia (Crystal Reed), which is a development that I'm not sure I like...

Recorded for later: The Orville (I'll get to this tonight), and Van
Helsing (of which I now have 2 episodes saved!).

--
"Three light sabers? Is that overkill? Or just the right amount
of "kill"?" - M-OC, "A Perilous Rescue" (ep. #2.9), LSW:TFA (08-10-2017)

One question, Who drew the kidnap picture?!?! I guess we know who did
it, but when you think about it logically, it doesn't make sense.

Since Eternal September was down again yesterday, this will be a two day
catch-up. I watched:

Are You the One? - "Love by the Numbers" - They *finally* got a perfect
match from the "truth booth." But it's likely too little, way too late.
Following the perfect match, the house reluctantly let's their
housemate Keith take control of the matches and he pairs them off based
on his "strategy" (apparently he's the smartest guy in the house)
instead of who has googly eyes for whom. There's a bit of push back but
Keith holds firm and forces them to pair up based on the calculations
he's made. As a result, they actually did pretty good, all things
considered, getting 5 perfect matches. Of course they don't know who
those 5 are, and there's only one episode left, but if they get another
perfect match out of the truth booth and actually follow a strategy, who
knows...

Speechless - "B-I--BIKINI U-N-UNIVERSITY" - JJ goes on what's supposed
to be a college tour but in reality it's so he can appear in a movie
being filmed there where his character has a young woman put her chest
in his face. If I didn't know any better I'd swear the actor who plays
JJ wrote this episode or at least "suggested" it to the writers.

The Orville "New Dimensions" - Already covered.

Penn & Teller: Fool Us - "Hanging Out With Penn & Teller" - Penn and
Teller inspect a suitcase but still can't figure out how the trick was
done. So much for calling his bluff. :-)

As much as the 2D space had an adverse effect on them, they barely paid
lip service to the possibility that their presence may have been having
a devastating effect on the population of 2D space. It's not as if they
could hear the screams of terror coming from the 2D people who may have
suddenly been slaughtered with no conception of what was happening to
them or why.

Yeah, didn't you see the first few minutes? That was a going away party
for him.

The Orville (Fox) -- covered by Obv.

S.W.A.T (CBS) -- SWAT impersonators are swatting homes. Shemar figures
there's more to the story. Naturally, a mean girl is involved and
seeking revenge. The B story is two of the SWATters providing security
for a out of control hockey player.

Penn & Teller (Fox) -- Finally, the missing episode. Covered by
Arthur.

Still no BatBoy or Bellfryd, but the previews show them returning for
the mid week annual seasonal quarter final.

I don't mind the pretties working together. At least they were all *in*
it. Long haired Leslie too!

Gordon's an idiot for booting Sophia to the curb. I'm not entirely sure
if she ever liked him either ...

So we know what the Pyg looks and sounds like and ... Gordon *still* has
no idea who he is. So why hide your identity if nobody recognizes you
anyway?!

Narrows lung. heh.

Even though you didn't ask what I watched, Ob did above, so

I tried to watch SIDE EFFECTS but it didn't interest me at all, so I
watched most of BEFORE I FALL again with the CC on. The more attention
you pay to it, the less sense it makes. :\

PENN & TELLER FOOL US
Another fun episode! And renewed!!

Rather than watch the various derivative versions running now, a
recorded Katie McGrath *is* A PRINCESS FOR CHRISTMAS. As I recall it
wasn't very good, but it was better than any of the other Xmas movies
I've watched this season.

MY THREE SONS. Steve has been out of town 6 weeks, and somehow Chip
grew 6 months of hair while he did. Charley makes him cut it, but
instead he has it shaped into an extremely effeminate women's wigs.
Since Steve doesn't make him cut it, he bleaches it snow white. When he
goes to put green dye in the water supply at school, Steve finally
decides corporal punishment is in order.

A) I didn't realize there was an ep where Chip came out of the closet.
2) I can't believe a school of that era wouldn't throw him out for
looking like an idiot.
3) I can't believe the other members of his sports team didn't hold him
down and shave his head.
Jay North plays another budding queen.

In an earlier episode Robbie got a hot Chinese female slave.
No. Really. The title of the episode is ROBBIE AND THE SLAVE GIRL.
Super hot Wiki Wiki Girl Irene Tsu is the super hot slave girl, and
nobody once entertains any inappropriate thoughts about what Robbie
could get her to do for him.

In another earlier episode, Robbie moves on campus and gets a job there
to be near a girl he likes. But she starts sleeping with her professor
who wears a fake beard to get a better grade. See above for 'wouldn't a
school of that era fire him and expel her?'

I thought that was hysterical. I assume it was meant as a joke for the
audience. If I had to take it seriously I'd guess that since the kid
won't talk, he drew that rather than yell for help, and my main question
would be how he had the time. If I had to take it more seriously, it
would be nice to have seen CatGirl drawing it for him. Or maybe
instructing him to draw it to infuriate P.N.Guin. Hey, that one
actually works!

Yeah, that was great. Did you hear Penn talking to Teller while they
finally looked in the suitcase? "We had two chances at it and were
wrong both times"

Much of the time the 'fools' involve them having to choose between a
couple possibilities and guessing wrong, so they know by default what
the right answer was. That's what they thought was happening with this
guy, but both guesses were wrong leaving them genuinely totally
perplexed. I loved it!

The Jude Law movie? Stick with it! There's more going on than is
apparent at first.

Yes, the most likely explanation is that the three ditzy dames made
Mar-teen draw that picture before they left with him, as they wanted
Penguin to know that Mar-teen had been pinched for leverage.

This is on too late for me to watch this semester, and it's not worth
recording.

However, I suspect that it would make a fine companion to "Hawa-eye-eye
Five-ZERO", so CBS should really move it to Fridays...

Agreed...and if this had been a STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION show you
can be sure they would have been communicating with the 2D life forms
instead of writing it off as impossible in a throw away line of dialog.

Yes, I saw the start of the show. I just wonder about the real world
storyline behind it. Has he asked to be released from the show since
his part has been so pitifully small? Is this going to be part of a
larger change to try and put another female character on the bridge?
...and next week's preview hinted that someone else was going away,
too...the doctor perhaps?

Maybe this was written by Richard Branson as a defense for how
motorboating events really happen?

I suspect that will be my reaction too.

That said, I would certainly like it if somebody else were to try a new "Longmire"-like show, though perhaps with a lead character who wasn't so... "laconic". ;)

That SF premise was not exactly plausible, but it was original -- and fun!
I liked the babble about protein folding. And of course the reference
to Flatland.

They did say that the Quantum Bubble would separate the ship from the
contents of the space, and that the inhabitants "would barely notice,
or not at all". I guess I believe them...

MacGyver always has the knife or at least some scrap metal he can use as

MacGyver would be the one to go in that scenario.

We only watched TBBT and Young Sheldon.

On TBBT it was between 7 yrs ago and today and the guys thought they were going to be rich but they didn't.

On YS I even thought, oh, that's like Elon Musk! But I didn't think he could be in YS because YS takes place 30 (?) yrs ago. But then he was! That was funny.

SUPERNATURAL / 13x08 / The Scorpion and the Frog

[Feeling as if they are running out of options, Sam and Dean agree to
steal a mysterious trunk belonging to a demon named Barthamus, in
exchange for a locator spell the Winchesters can use to track down Jack.]

Dean makes like a supernatural divining rod and a demon makes like a
pincushion. Beyond those funny bits, this one was pretty much a plain
vanilla standalone and filler-ish outing with no Cass or Jack or
Lucifer. Not bad. Not great. Just kinda there. And given that the
brothers didn't come away with what they needed to come away with in
order to find Jack, there was no progress made, either.

Grade: C+

GOTHAM / 4x10 / A Dark Knight: Things That Go Boom

[Gordon tries to broker a deal with Penguin that involves Sofia.
Meanwhile, Alfred tries to pull Bruce out of his teenage-angst and
downward spiral, as Lee Thompkins gains more control over the Narrows.]

Equal parts dark and stupid with little in the way of humor or scenery
chewing. Sofia teams up with Team Babs. Penguin wins Round One. Nygma's
slip-sliding away again. Lee probably isn't long for this world if she
doesn't change her humane approach to being an underworld leader. And
despite what the official synopsis says, Bruce and Alfred are nowhere to
be found here. Yeah, that's a weird one.

Grade: B-

THE ORVILLE / 1x11 / New Dimensions

[Kelly discovers that Lt. John Lamarr is smarter than he lets on. So,
she pushes Ed to consider him for a key leadership position on the ship
after The Orville gets damaged by a mysterious spatial anomaly causing
harrowing effects to all things living.]

"Gordon, I don't know what you're driving at, but I'm gonna go ahead and
change the subject."

A decent story with some TRON-like visuals and few laughs. The best part
of this one was the redemption of the John Lamarr character, who turns
out to be the second-smartest crewman on the ship. I like him in his new
role as leader and chief engineer much, much more than I liked him as
the idiot who dry-humped a statue not too long ago, although I'm not at
all clear on how "smart" equals "qualified to run the engineering
department," especially since it seems safe to assume that he hasn't
been doing a lot of engineering-y things in the past or he would have
already drawn some attention to himself in this regard.

Grade: B-

I thought it was kind of disturbing that they were willing to torture
and kill a guy who wasn't a monster or any kind of evil-doer. He was
just a crusty cranky old dude (who had managed to put a protection spell
over himself). All so that they could steal property that didn't belong
to them. They never even stopped to debate the ethics of it all.

And Yaphet got totally screwed over. His ability to push more than two

I don't get why these criminals seem to think other criminals are
honorable people who will keep their word. We got two examples of this
stupidity in one episode:

Sophia/Penguin: Sophia kidnaps the kid to use as leverage over
Penguin, which goes something like this-- "Turn over your
entire underworld empire to me, and I'll let the kid go."
Penguin submits, she lets the kid go, and then stands there
smiling, apparently fully expecting Penguin to live up to his
end now that the kid is safe. Um, Sofia? He's a *criminal*.
The possibility that he might be lying ought to stand out like
a neon sign.

Lee/Samson: Lee poisons Samson to use as leverage over him to
take over his territory, which goes something like this--
"Clear out of the Narrows by the end of the day, or you'll be
dead from this poison that I somehow put in your drink before
I even arrived." Samson submits, and Lee tosses him the
antidote. Um, Lee? He's a *criminal* who has already lied
right to your face once. The possibility that he might be
lying and, once cured, not only not leave town, but come
after you guns blazing ought to stand out like a neon sign.

Oh, and it's convenient that they never show us how Pyg was somehow
clinging to ceiling of his cell like Spider Man when he dropped that
noose around the red-shirt guard's neck. We get a miraculous escape
without the writers having to actually, you know, explain themselves.

And why the hell are the guards at Arkham walking the halls with
flashlights? Did the city not pay the electric bill? The guards can't
turn on the damn lights in their own facility?

Well, I'd say that he was more than just a crusty cranky old dude, but I
was wrong to label him as a demon. In any case, he was a pretty nasty
piece of work and I didn't mind seeing them use him the way that they
did. And it's all part of their desire to get Jack back, which is a
really important thing to have happen.

Yeah, pretty much. And the only new character to survive the outing was
Smash. Now that I think about it, I wonder if she's gonna be showing up

Usually a safe assumption, but in this case, some other brand of

Apparently he never even leaves his house. How nasty can he be? He
didn't even kill Sam after Sam stabbed him with the demon knife. He just
knocked Sam out, then left him alive, when both legally and morally,
he'd have been justified in killing Sam.

In any event, it was *his* property that they trespassed,
broke-and-entered and tortured him to steal. None of that makes Sam &
Dean good guys in this scenario.

I'm not entirely unsympathetic to your viewpoint, but this was a guy who
played with powerful things and he wasn't going to be willing to
voluntarily give up what our gang needed. And our gang needed what they
needed because they're addressing a much, much larger threat/issue in

I just don't see "We have a really important mission" as an excuse for
victimizing people, even people who may not be all that likable.

I mean, what if some demon showed up and said, "Hey, I have a way of
finding and depowering Jack. I'll give it to you if each of you go rape
and murder a teenager." (They are demons, after all. They're evil and
like to see evil done.) Would Sam and Dean be justified in doing what
the demon asked because, hey, saving the entire world and all?
