I was shopping today and I saw some disturbing paperback books. They
had the female characters of Star Trek (Dr. Crusher, Seven of Nine,
Captain Janeway) in scantily-clad outfits on the cover. I believe these
are stories depicting the "dark-side" of the mirror universe, but do we
really need a lewd side to Star Trek novels, esp. ones approved by the
powers that be? And I wonder what the actresses portrayed on these
covers think of this?

There has always been a "lewd" side to
Startrek. Remember those women with the
strategically-placed bits of fur on the vacation
planet Kirk and Co. landed on? And then there
were the naked (well, hinted at) bits regarding
Quark's mother Moogie and Loxanna Troi's
non-existent wedding gown. It would seem that
"lewdness" is OK, as long as the major characters
are not the ones doing it......

Just a thought.

These are the new "Dark Passions" novels.

That would be correct.

DAMN RIGHT WE DO!

If they have concerns, they can take it up with Viacom. Sheesh,
it's not like they're *nude* on these covers. None of their costumes /
poses are any worse than things they've ALL had to wear on their
respective series. (What, you've never seen the Intendant's leathers
or Seven's catsuit before?)

Lighten up dude. If anything, TREK could use a little more mature
content.

Hey if ya want to see them nude try the alt.bianaries.celeb groups. Seven of
Nine is pretty much the only one I haven't seen nude yet. I figure once she
dumps that Braga guy and she's hurtin' for work she'll go nude.

About Jeri.. I doubt it..
Shes said that he will not be doing nudes becuse she never wants to have to
explain something like that to her son.. and explain why "mommy wasn't
wearing any clothes" in some picture.

She seems to have taken a much more moral stance than is typically found in
hollywood.. and good for her.

add to that the fact that if she ever does need money.. all she has to do is
do voice acting..book readings.. or documentaries ( shes started doing
documentaries for the discovery channel and her voice is well suited to the
task ) and she is financlly secure. Shes taking the route the Leonard Nimoy
took... He said in an interview at one time that most of the money he has
made is through other projects than trek . He may not have had a great deal
of high profile roles and whatnot.... but he lives very financally secure,
and that was through smart management and smart decisions. . Jeri seems to
have a good head on her shoulders.. and is also seems to be a responsible
and smart woman.... something tells me that if she has put her mind to use
and planned to make herself secure.. she's likely secure right now. So I
wouldn't count on her doing a nude ever Y man.

Well it is a cheap and disgusting ploy but no doubt the sales are there
and the ends justify the means.

But then again considering how badly Ds9 messed up the Mirrorverse it's
hard to imagine how much more damage the novels could do.

Humm... In an alternative universe, should not Jeri be overweight
and wearing a very loose warm-up suit? Basically, taking the
body of Roseanne? :)

I agree. It's not even scant enough to call it "lewd." Personally, I
think the outfits on the cover of "Dark Passions: Book One" (with
Kira, Troi, and Seven) look cool. Very sci-fi. As for Captain
Janeway and Doc Crusher on "Book Two," they're just wearing dresses
for God's sake. I've seen skimpier clothes on eight year olds.

>Lighten up dude. If anything, TREK could use a little more mature

It can use anything that strays from the norm. The "Dark Passions"
novels are different, and that's cool. Just like the Section 31
novels coming out. I hope both of these series do well because it's
something fresh and not just the same stuff we've seen for decades.

As others on this thread mentioned, the portrayals in the books and on the
covers are simply in line with what was done on the various shows - the image
of Kira is right from the mirror-universe episodes of DS9, the outfit Seven is
wearing on the first cover is the one Lursa and Betor wore on TNG, and on the
second book the outfits are all-but-modest.

You can like this or not, but it's right from the shows.

I agree that the cover presentation is no more exploitative than the show.

SPOILER WARNING - ALERT...

However, what I find disappointing was the publicity for the books, which was
a huge tease. How Seven was falling in love with the Intendant and had worked
her way into her inner circle, etc. All that seemed to imply there would be at
least one major love scene between the two. But instead, all the reader gets
is Kira giving Seven a peck on the lips at the end of Book 1.

Aarrghhh!!!!

Thank you for your response. I also appreciate the discussion that has taken
place on this subject. My concern has always been the integrity of the Star Trek
genre. I would not want to see a base attitude, even as an undercurrent, being
touted as what Star Trek is about. I will read through these books, and I hope
that the content contained in them are of a quality we can appreciate as fans of
Star Trek. Again, thank you to everyone who has given input on this topic.

Brian

P.S. If I knew I was going to get the attention of Pocket Books, and an executive
editor nonetheless, I would have thrown in a story idea (or five) :)

Again, right in line with what was seen on the shows....:)
