Harlan Ellison wrote himself into a speaking role in "The City of the
Edge of Forever." The extent of Ellison's aspirations to pull a cameo
Alfred-Hitchcock-style were unknown (to me). In his heart of hearts,
perhaps Ellison intended to go full-blown-Hitchcock and ham it up for
the camera himself?
The dastardly Roddenberry had others exorcise the Ellison character from
the script. The character named "Trooper" was purged.
Ellison got the last laugh however. A graphic novel named "The City on
the Edge of Forever" was recently published. It was created from
Ellison's original script. "Trooper" and his speaking lines were fully
restored. And the artist made "Trooper" look just like old man Ellison.
On a metaphysical level this seems to make Ellison a real trooper, so to
speak.
