would be the guy in Haifa who's been creating black holes out of sound waves,
FOR SCIENCE!!1!, and has apparently found that yes, they DO spontaneously
evaporate through Hawking (sonic) radiation.

Dave, CNN has a slightly exaggerated headline on their video

That might have been interesting if

A) It wasn't CNN, which isn't a news source so much as a tabloid, and

B) you'd included a URL.

Had Samuel Taylor Coleridge been doing opium while on Usenet

In Usenet-land did Terry Twat
A state of assholery decree;
And whereupon the eunuchs ran,
To bury heads all in the sand,
Rather than face Terry.
So twice five years of bull were found
With idiocy, quite profound.
And most, not knowing Terry wasn’t bright,
Nor that control was to make up for his luck,
Where he had failed at everything he’d tried
And been bent over deskward and butt fucked.

I think he is not EXACTLY creating black holes (arent' they
super dangerous?) out of sound waves, either.

Or so I'm told. I don't really get what it is.

He is not creating black holes at all. He's created a system which has
some physical analogies with a black hole, and has observed that its
behaviour does include some that is analogous to Hawking radiation.

This is not proof that Hawking radiation is real, but it means that this
kind of model might be useful for studying other properties of black
holes. Without the vast-mass-that-eats-the-earth properties.

Physicists often make models that are easier to study - there's a fluid
mechanics group here in Cambridge that uses vast amounts of sugar syrup
because things happen in it very slowly compared to water.

It's a physical analogy (or model) of a black hole, using a fancy state
of matter and sound waves instead of an actual black hole and particles
bound by gravity. The physical analogy generates an analog to Hawking
radiation, which made the modellers happy.

Kinda similar to using waves on a water pool as a model for
gravitational waves.

It's modeling. He's come up with a model where sound waves act like
light waves, created a locale where sound waves cannot escape and
watches to see what happens.
