According to audiobook vendor Downpour
(http://www.downpour.com/penric-s-demon-1) the novella "Penric's Demon" is
"The Penric & Desdemona Series, book 4". However, according to Fantastic
Fiction
(https://www.fantasticfiction.com/b/lois-mcmaster-bujold/penrics-demon.htm)
it's the first book in the series.

I suspect FF is correct because the numbering at Downpour shows the upcoming
novellas "Penric's Mission" and "Penric and the Shaman" as books 3 and 4
respectively, with no 1 or 2, which makes no sense to me since they aren't
even out yet.

But I thought I'd ask if anyone knew.

While I'm at it, I would expect that the series would eventually be released
as a collection in a single volume once complete--any advance word from the
author or her publisher? Or any sort of softcover version? I'd love to
read them, but currently they only seem to be available as DRM-encumbered
ebooks, which I avoid. Hmmm ... I wonder if my library can get me the
hardcover until a more affordable version becomes available. ($25 for a
novellette seems high.)

I'd suggest going to Amazon and looking at the publication dates.
Penric's Demon is #1, Penric and the Shaman is #2, Penric's Mission
is #3. Confusion is likely because they're in the same setting as
the Chalion books, or possibly because somebody is stupid.

Having read all of them, I can state with certainty that "Penric's Demon"
is the first, "Penric and the Shaman" comes next, and "Penric's Mission"
is third. Read them in that order.

Subterranean Press did a hardcover of the first one. But mostly they've
been self-published as e-books. I don't know that there's much hope
for a single volume printed edition.

Thanks, David. (Also, long time no phosphors.)

At that point I might just get the Downpour audio books if my library can't
help. I really avoid DRM. (Downpour is self-consciously a DRM-free
alternative to Audible.)
