UPDATED: Updates and Confirmations on Marvel Casting!

An incredibly trusted and wise source of Big Shiny Robot!s has
consulted his trusted and wise source at the Marvel/Paramount camp
about the recent flurry of casting rumours that have plagued the
internet in the last week (yes, were guilty, too.)
Here is what our good friend had to say:
According to MY studio guy, the rumors about Chad Michael Murray
(One Tree Hill), Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural)
and other unknowns/television actors reading for Cap are true.
Apparently, when the script came in with World War II sequences
(featuring the Invaders), the studio heads decided it was beyond their
means to make this movie AND afford A-listers like Brad Pitt and Matt
Damon.
Sure sounds like everyones high on McPartlin, who evidently just
lost out on the Superman role to Brandon Routh.
As for Spidey, the Logan Lerman rumors are just that rumors.
Apparently Sony is waiting for James Vanderbilts script to come in
(hes balking on whether Peter Parker is still in school or just out).
And they havent even come to terms with director Marc Webb yet.
NO on this one.
> Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural)
Qualified "Yes" on these two...
Remember, this is the singing dancing Captain America.

I refer you to his stint as the Lone Ranger.
That should be 'Hell NO on this one'.

McPartlin looks the part more, and he's been pretty much playing the part,
personality-wise, on Chuck. I'd pick Padelecki over Ackles for Captain
America.

NOOO! MAKE THE BAD MAN STOP REFERRING!
Whatever happened to the hot Indian babe from that?

Huh. Plugging along.
Man, the Ranger's real name in that was LUKE HARTMAN?? What the hell??

You'd think she's have been one of the alternate Weir babes at least. :)
So you are saying John Barrowman?
That has possibilities.

So, since Padalecki is wholly inappropriate for Captain America (he'd
make a great Winter Soldier, IMO), I take it that this is your way of
saying that Ackles is inappropriate for Cap, too?

I'd love to see Captain Awesome play Captain America. As long as they
cast Sarah Lancaster as Sharon Carter.

Awesome, yes. Sarah ... can't see her as a blonde.

Yes, you can. In a lot of episodes of Everwood, season 2 (and a bit
of season 3), as underage Ephram's college-aged girlfriend (and his
sister Delia's babysitter). Perhaps the single most important
character in the series who was not a lead.
There's a huge reason that I want Ellie to be the next one who finds
out Chuck's identity: because it might just lead to more screen time
for Lancaster, who I think is criminally underused.

I agree we need to find more work for Lancaster, but that's exactly why
I *don't* want her in Captain America, which I hope ends a lot of
careers.
Hmmm...I've never seen her as anything else (Everwood).
Why do you hope that? (I'm not being disingenuous. I was never a
Marvel reader.)
Heck - she was a blonde going all the way back to "Saved by the Bell:
The New Class"!
I think that was before I watched TV.
This is the version of Cap where the director is embarrassed about the
costume, so they're changing his origin from 'super soldier' to 'USO
song and dance man' -- JJ should be fired off the project on the spot.
Say what?
He does not sing or dance. They justify the costume as being intended
to raise the men's morale, so, yes, he's with the USO at first, but
then charges off to be heroic.
You haven't been reading the memos? The director says the costume
doesn't make any sense, so instead of wrapping their super soldier in a
flag and sending him out to kick Japanazi ass and inspire the citizens
and rally the troops, they put him in a USO show to sing and dance and
entertain. And then when he eventually does go fight evil, he adapts
his spangly show leotards, but makes them all muted and dark because ...
because the director is a fucktard, and needs to be fired. There. I
said it.
IT'S THE FREAKING 1940S! HE'S CAPTAIN AMERICA!! IT'S A SET UP FOR THE
AVENGERS MOVIE, WHICH IS FULL OF PEOPLE IN COSTUMES!!!!!
If you're embarrassed by the costume, you shouldn't be making a Captain
America movie in the first place.
I can't believe this is the same director that made the Rocketeer, that
fought Katzenweaselberg for the helmet, that staged the shot of Cliff
Secord posed in the spotlight against the American flag before flying
off to the dirigible with the giant swastika on it. He *used* to
understand, but he's lost it along the way.
And that's why I don't want anybody I like anywhere near this sham of a
travesty of a movie.
And why are we casting Sarah as Sharon Carter anyway? Sharon Carter's
not in World War 2; she's current day, after Cap wakes from the ice.
Yes, I haven't been paying attention. The last I heard was it WAS going
to be a WWII Capt. So I assumed it would be the normal origin story.
It's not going to ba set *solely* in WW2 -- and moreover, since Cap
*does* come to the present day at some point in the course of the
Avengers movies *and* Sharon is the most significant female character
in Cap's history, it's logical to be considering who should be cast as
Sharon.

Captain America To Wield Shield, Microphone In New Movie
Wondering how the upcoming Captain America movie will fulfill its own
hype about being unlike any other Marvel movie to date? It'll be by
having its titular hero singing and dancing. And, no, we're not joking.
Director Joe Johnston told the LA Times' Hero Complex blog that the
musical Cap came about through problem solving:
The costume is a flag, but the way we're getting around that is we have
Steve Rogers forced into the USO circuit. After he's made into this
super-soldier, they decide they can't send him into combat and risk him
getting killed. He's the only one and they can't make more. So they say,
'You're going to be in this USO show' and they give him a flag suit. He
can't wait to get out of it... So he's up on stage doing songs and
dances with chorus girls and he can't wait to get out and really fight.
When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things
happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he's
become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him
because he embodies something special.
As Johnston says, that explanation "was never in the comics... because
they didn't really need it. In comics, he puts on the costume and the
reader just justifies because of the nature of the medium," which may
miss the point that, in the comics, he wore the costume for propaganda
and morale purposes after becoming a super soldier, which seems an
easier solution to us. Nonetheless, we're already fearing the musical
Cap bodes ill for all but those who loved Jazz Spidey from Spider-Man 3.
That low rumbling you're hearing is the start of fan revolt.

Ok this doesn't bode well...
Nope. I'm already in line to stay away. Maybe just rent the rubber
ears version instead.
No. Nothing has been said to suggest that his job in the USO will
involve singing or dancing.

Which is almost immediately.

Actually it sounds like they'll switch to a version of Ultimate Cap's
costume, which fits with them using what was basically Ultimate Doctor
Doom, and will probably look better in live action.
There. I

Uh-hunh. And in each of the Marvel movies they've given a reason for
the costume. In Spider-Man, it was to conceal his age while
performing using his powers. In Iron Man it was because the costume
is the powers. In Fantastic Four it was because regular clothing
didn't mesh with their powers. What's Captain America's reason?
>And why are we casting Sarah as Sharon Carter anyway? Sharon Carter's

But she was the identical little sister, and later niece of Peggy
Carter, who Cap knew in World War II.

You sound like you like it a lot more than I do.
