A different question. I can't remember any references in the movies,
but in the novelizations of the films, R2 and 3PO are on occassion
refered to as "he". Of course that doesn't always imply a gender in
English. :)

I think they are basically ... robots. They really don't have a need
for gender, as if R2 or 3PO thinks it is time for another droid, then
they just might find an arc-welder and go to work! :)

Although maybe they do have programs that are based on genders? They
even might have programs preventing them from creating more droids? :/

I've been wondering- is Artoo male or female? There really haven't
been any references to his gender in the movies, have there?

He's a droid, people call him 'he' but as a robot, it doesn't have any
sort of characteristics that give it a gender.

Kind of like people calling a car 'girl'

"I'm sorry, sir. He seems to have picked up a slight flutter."

"You can repair him, can't you?" - Threepio, ANH

Of course, it's obvious that the references to the male gender were only
part of Threepio's programming, possibly to give a more human
characteristic to Artoo to allow for a more comfortable atmosphere for
humans (Hutts, Mon Calamari, Twi'lek, etc.) around what is, in fact,
just a droid.

Artoo is referred to as "he" throughout the trilogy.

Here are the droids I consider "female", for whatever reason, canon or not.

EV-9D9
The silver 3-PO droid on Cloud City. (What DOES "echuta" mean, anyhow?)
FX-7 (Nurse "Ratchet")

Artoo is male, and there are references to his gender in the movies as
others have pointed out. The Essential Guide to Droids, I believe, says
that C-3P0 and R2-D2 have 'masculine programming'.

Wellsir, given that it ends in a number, I really don't think "R2-D2"
can have gender. 'Sides, this is English we're talking about, right?
There is no gender in English.

Artoo is male. How do I know? 'Cause he's painted blue! If Artoo were a girl,
he'd be painted pink. :)

Yes, I think that would hold up in any Gamorrean court of law! :)

What does that then make a Gold droid? Incredibly vain???

Er, um if you want to think about Trek:

Seven-of-Nine.

That er thing ... has about the least genderless body I've seen in a
_very_ long time. :) No, 7-of-9 is very female looking. Although at
the risk of having a joke totally misunderstood, I will point out that
7-of-9 is very logically (a rarity for er ... um ..., so maybe she/he/it
*is* a droid <--- um the joke folks!). ;)

Michael Mierzwa
-oh but 7-of-9 is highly, um opinionated ... so maybe that make her a
her? ;)

Actually as a kid I just assumed R2 was a "he". Afterall, the Ewoks
tried to eat him. The only person/thing they didn't try to eat was a
"she".

Maybe it is because she is so bossy and evil. ;)

Hmmmm, I also consider E-3PO (the same droid) to be like a rich stuck up
cousin of C-3PO. And please Al, this is a family newsgroup, don't say
nasty things like ... er ... E'@*^'$%. ;)

> FX-7 (Nurse "Ratchet")

Nice nickname, but FX-7 seems less droid and more, batca chamber
machine. I never figured out what makes a droid and what makes a
computer. I'd say FX-7 is more like the Falcon's on board computers.
Which means genderless somehow??? :/

Read the novelizations. R2-D2 has male programming.

I'm thinking ot the male/female language refering to computer
connectors. R2 definately inserts a connector into a female receptor of
different ships. I would say he is male and the ships are female.

A.k.a. a hermaphrodite. Look it up if you still don't know what it is.

Yeah, it seems as though since it's warming up, people are coming up all
of a sudden. Did everyone hibernate in other newsgroups during the
winter? I used to get about 100 messages a day, now they've jumped up
to 250+, it takes me FOREVER to read, and if I miss more than 5 days in
a row, I might as well set aside a couple of hours, or just mark them
all read. (heaven forbid) ;)

Well, until they give him a pair of CGI balls (or should his ball-bearings

genderless and the terms "he/his/her" are just convenient references.
