A while back this story was mentioned in a thread by someone who
wished to read it again but unfortunately it wasn't (and isn't) on-
line. While browsing the net recently though I did come across this:

"Good news and bad news. Good news is, as you probably suspect, that
there's a ton of anthologies that include the story. Bad news is that
the only Dunsany collection to do so is THE LITTLE TALES OF SMETHERS,
which is a scarce one-- UK hardcover eds only, originally in 1952
and a reprint in 1978. ABEbooks and Bookfinder.com show some copies,
but the cheapest is around $50. (SMETHERS is more or less Dunsany's
crime collection, including a few other cases of the "Relish" pair
of detectives.)

It's also in these magazines: TIME AND TIDE for 12 Nov and 19 Nov,
1932; STORY #43 (Feb 1936); ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE for
March 1951; SUSPENSE (British) for Dec. 1959; and in these
anthologies:

POWERS OF DARKNESS ed anon (1934)
101 YEAR'S ENTERTAINMENT ed Ellery Queen (1946 and reprints)
TWO BOTTLES OF RELISH ed Whit Burnett (1943)
THE STORY POCKET BOOK ed Whit Burnett (1944)

GREAT BRITISH MYSTERY STORIES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY ed Anon (1990)
GREAT IRISH DETECTIVE STORIES ed Peter Haining (1993)
50 GREATEST MYSTERIES OF ALL TIME ed Otto Penzler (1998)

Almost all of the above presumably out of print, but many should be
findable fairly easily on used market. I think the only Dunsany
collections currently in print are THE HASHISH MAN (1996), THE
COMPLETE PEGANA (1998), and TIME AND THE GODS (the last only in
the UK), and all of these are fantasy collections.

OT but I wonder if this is the Dennis Lien I knew briefly through SF
fandom in the early eighties. He was from Minneapolis and I stayed
briefly with him and his partner when jaunting around after the 1980
Worldcon.
