Last night I saw the film "Simple Men", by Hal Hartley. During the
opening credits, a song was played that I assume was by Sonic Youth. It
seemed familiar to me, but I can't think of the name of it, or what record
it's off. Could somebody help me with this please? (If anybody says "Kool
Thing" I will personally throttle them...) The song feature an acoustic
guitar intro, which changed into a Sonic Youth-style guitar break. I really
loved this piece of music (and the entire film), and desperately want to know
what it is.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie too. I can't answer his question, but
I'll like to know who did most of the guitar bits in the soundtrack, I
don't think its Sonic Youth.

I really don't think this was a sonic youth song....the only sy
song listed in the credits is kool thing. it's either an
original bit by ned rifle (the guy who did the music) or a yo
la tengo piece. not sure which.

I know that Lucas can't handle the stress of directing, but I seriously think
he should still direct since all his movies that he's left in the hands of
other directors haven't turned out as well as his own works, IMHO.

BTW, who directed those T.V. Star Wars movies that came out immediately after
Return of the Jedi in 1985 or so? Was it Lucas's work? Where can we
get at hold of them, if they're worth watching at all?

The little guitar bits in Hal Hartley's films are actually played by him!
But he calls himself 'Ned Rifle' (also the name of a character in the film!).
I really like what he does.

Hmmmm...like _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ perchance? Yeah, that one sucked.

First off, your chances will be much better asking in rec.arts.sf.star-wars,
and secondly, what T.V. movies????? I have never heard of such a thing...

Well, Sonic Youth *does* have a song named "Kool Thing" on their "Goo" album.

There were two Star Wars films that dealt with Endor after
the Return of the Jedi. The latter was called The Battle for Endor
and had Wiflord Brimley in it. The movies were show originally on
ABC and were geared for children. They had lots of Ewoks and kids.
I rather enjoyed The Battle for Endor. I've noticed that they are
available on video. The movies came out about the same time the
animated Star Wars and Ewoks series were on.

Good point. How about the fact that Lawrence Kasdan directed Empire Strikes
Back? Return of the Jedi too?

I think he might be referring to the Ewok Adventures and one other .. Battle
for Endor. Also, there was a really silly birthday special for Han Solo or
something like that that had all the cast in it.

Actually, Irvin Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back,
and Richard Marquand directed Return of the Jedi, although Kasdan
did help write the screenplays for both films.

There were 2 Ewok movies...

one was "The Ewok Adventure", and I can't remember the
name of the second one.

How about that "fact" indeed. Actually Irvin Kershner directed EMPIRE
STRIKES BACK (beautifully, IMHO -- it's the one of the trilogy that
remains visually strongest in memory for me).

Richard Marquand directed that.

Yeah, there were three Ewok movies, each fairly well done but silly
none the less.
The Birthday Special was an Ewok thing. I'd love to see it again,
as I only saw about 15 minutes of it back in '79 when it was first
broadcast, and then told I needed to get to bed (agh! I was 8 at the
time).
