I used, with satisfaction, a R0DE Videomic, on a Canon XM2/GL2, and on a
Sony HD-FX1, always connecting it directly using the minijack plug, and
using it both with a mic boom and mounted directly on the camera mount.

I'm thinking of buying a better mic, to be used with dialogues in short
movies (and, why not, also for recording some audio effects), and think,
after reading some reviews and heard some test file, a goog choice could
be R0DE NTG2.

What do you think about it?
I need it for both indoor and outdoor shooting, with and without the
windcover, and using a mic boom, but also directly on the camera.

At least at the beginning, I'd use it with a XLR->JACK (unbalanced),
slitting the mono signal to the two channels of the camera, setting them
to different levels (one for higher signal/noize, the other in case the
first one gets distorted), using the AA battery for the pre-amplifier.

In the future, it would be really useful for me having the possibility
of using XLR balanced connection, and Phantom power, so... I think this
mic could be a good buy for the present, but also a good buy for the
future...

What do you think?

Any good alernative, with similar price?

Thanx!

I don?t thin there is. Other similar mics cost about twice as mych. I
have tested it against most shotgun mics I normally use, and it compares
well even with the old sennheiser mkh416.

I think that he is suggesting that the NTG1 may be of more use during sexual
acts then while sound recording.

Marco, Oleg doesn't think its a good mic and you can't argue with an Ian
Dury fan.

Do not mind these comedians. They, just like me, have bought very
expensive mikes and are pissed off when new inexpensive gear appears to
the market. There are quite a few of us that are astonished of the
quality of Rode NTG 1/2. They compare well with MKH 60 and MKH 416 which
I have used for years.

There are many mikes that perform well enough for film and tv-work to be
called "good" but for the price of NTG 1/2 it is hard to find equal.

Its not a price issue at all , the mike sound worst then almost every mike I
have or had - the only one that is equal to it is me 66 that I also think is
peas of shit
and as you know iam the first for cheap tricks if it worth the cost -this
one is not
- especially not sound wise , - and if you find this is good substitute for
your mkh - good for you
the only good use I found is for the short version to sit on the camera -
as long there is a sound its good enough and it performers quit well behind
the French flag :-)

I understand. If You think me 66 is "peas of shit" I think we discuss of
"apples and oranges". I did quite a lot of "blind" comparisons with my
colleagues in film mixing studio and I do not dare call them deaf. I
dare say that me 66 is quite a useful mike, but costs twice as much as
ntg1/2.

Another possibility is that you tested ntg2 without battery, which has a
spring in the battery compartment that makes a lot of noise.

I checked the ntg-1 and 2 and 1 which does not have anything inside and
still it sounds peas of shit :-)
maybe your friends need to check the accuracy of their monitoring
I have mixed quit allot of small quartets and trios with par of
schoepses while had reference of 5 $ monitor to check if it pass the mono
tv at home , for that matter the schoepses where pure waist .
