Ask them to make innovative movies, like cop movies and dramas of the 70s, the horrors of the 80's. After that, it was downhill.

Um, why exactly would/should they stop making movies that people want to see?

Noboby *wants* to see them. All the dumbasses go to see them because
there's nothing else to watch, and they can't think of anything better
to do on Friday / Saturday nights.

How about a year without comedies?

Makes about as much sense.

There you go again, just like you did in rec.arts.tv, claiming to know
what people do and should like, as if your personal taste is the
aesthetic benchmark by which all film and television is judged.

I like those movies and yes, I do want to see them. You don't get to
define for me the bounds of my enjoyment.

Same thing said by every company that eventually falls behind. Nothing gained without some risk. No progress.

You're confusing 'progress' with 'profit'.

We're talking Hollywood. Profit is progress,

popular films of a certain genre is not profit or progress.

Perhaps RichA could understand how silly the challenge is if it were
repurposed as:

Challenge Hollywood to go one year with no gun violence movies.

I thought no Hollywood movie ever made a dime of "profit". :-)

Hmm. Profit and progress do have *that* in common...

Hardly. There are no guarantees except that no one sustains profit without risk.

The entertainment section in yesterday's New Zealand Herald newspaper
had a list of "predictions" for 2018, including this one:

2018 is the year of ...
-----------------------
* Super fatigue
While we love a good superhero yarn as much as the next geek,
we can't help but think things are now super out of control.
A quick rundown of all the comic book movies hitting the
cinema this year (deep breath):
- 'Avengers: Infinity War'
- 'Black Panther'
- 'Deadpool 2'
- 'The New Mutants'
- 'Ant-Man and the Wasp'
- 'Venom'
- 'X-Men: Dark Pheonix'
- 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse'
and - 'Aquaman'

You're gonna need the super-stamina of a true believer and
buns of steel to sit through all the upcoming cinematic
Spandex.

the creatures going to movies today seem to have an unbound appetite for it.

Unfortunately most humans these days are apparently braindead and
easily satisfied by continuous explosions, overly-exaggerated fights,
and car chases. :-\

Oh, you can pummel people with non-stop action. The trick is, to keep from being screechingly boring and tedious. "Die Hard" was a good example of one that wasn't boring. But I'm sure there are more than a few people looking at their watch during these things.
