A recent check in the Publishers Extra section of newspapers.com shows that they're apparently adding the Los Angeles Times archives to their profile. The same L.A. Times that is (in name only) part of the Tribune Corporation.

One would assume this would pave the way for other Tribune papers to be added (like the Chicago Tribune obviously as well as the Baltimore Sun, Hartford Courant and -- hopefully -- Orlando Sentinel as well as the South Florida Sun-Sentinel).

And as a bit of an assist,
here's Dave Strickler's L.A.Times comics index 1904-2008:

Thought I'd bump this up in light of the proposed Gannett/Tribune merger.

Gannett has pretty much all of their newspapers (sans USA Today of course) available on Newspapers.com via Publishers Extra (Detroit Free Press, Louisville Courier-Journal, Tennesseean, Arizona Republic, Cincinnati E------r and a few others have full or nearly full archives available for viewing).

A while back I reported that Newspapers.com had begun archiving Tribune (for now) paper Los Angeles Times. I wonder if the proposed merge had anything to do with that. And given Gannett's recent acquisition of the former Journal/Scripps Howard papers, one wonders if those papers will be available as well. Thoughts?

A while ago, Newspapers.com was adding the Philadelphia Inquirer to their collection. Now they've added the Philadelphia Daily News as well.

I can give you sample comics lineups but as of right now I don't have a job and my subscription to Publishers Extra expired as of Monday. I hope to subscribe again as soon as I get a new job. Right now, if anybody wants to tackle these comics lineups, be my guest.

Another update: It looks like Newspapers.com is working on completing the archives of the Chicago Tribune. Previously I could only find archives from the mid-1990's through the early 2000's. I can't pinpoint how much of the archive they've done but I've seen the early portion of the archives go back as far as 1963.

FYI, I scouted the later part of the Chicago Tribune archives on Newspapers.com and right now, the latest issue they have is 12/31/2000.

And the earliest of the modern Chicago Tribune archives (post-1963) they have is from 3/18/1994 so the Newspapers.com archives prior to recently only has the Chicago Tribune available from 3/18/1994 through 12/31/2000.

I have a feeling we may be seeing the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News papers linked to Newspapers.com very soon if recent adds are any indicator.

Both the Inquirer and Daily News latest archives go through June 2016.

As for the Chicago Tribune, they may possibly be next. Between 2/16/1963 and 3/18/1994, the post 2/16/1963 material (when they went from "Chicago Daily Tribune" to "Chicago Tribune") has archives up from the beginning (2/17/1963) until (as of now) 3/2/1981 before the 1994-2000 material.

Stay tuned.

Although it's under an embargo right now, newspapers.com is in the process of adding once and current Tribune/Tronc paper New York Daily News archives.

This site becomes better and better. :)

Looks like newspapers.com is adding the McClatchy newspapers to its' portfolio. The Charlotte Observer archives have been posted and they're working on the Miami Herald archives as well.

Are the McClatchy owned Sacamento Bee and Fresno Bee and Modesto Bee part of newspapers.com ?

Just saw the Sacramento Bee archives (albeit under an embargo) while searching for the latest updates.

The Observer is up to 1963 as the latest year for their available archives. I really hope those papers go past 1963 and have their full archives available (some non-existant newspapers such as the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the Nashville Banner only went up to 1963).
