> John Carpenters Snake Plissken #1 Rodriguez Cvr Ed, $2.99
"Heard he was - ", no, wait I've already used that line on another group
today. Bugger. I wasn't going to get this, but I watched "Escape from New
York" again the other night and now I want more.
> DC COMICS
> Global Frequency #8 (Of 12), $2.95
No idea who the artist is this time, but I've been enjoying the mix of
genres and narrative styles in "Global Frequency" so far and don't expect
this issue to be any different.
> Hellblazer #184, $2.75
It's strange - I like Carey's "Hellblazer", but I have trouble remembering
the actual stories more than a week after I've read them.
> HARRIS COMICS
> Vampirella #20 Reg Ed, $2.99
Yay. More John Smith weirdness. That's a *good* thing.
> MARVEL COMICS
> Mystique #2, $2.99
Still undecided about this. The first issue was solid, but lacked any
strong hook to come back for the second issue. I'm also wondering whether a
six-issue opening story arc for a new series is just a little too long.
> X-Treme X-Men Vol 3 Schism TPB, $16.99
Thought I'd check in on X-Treme X-Men again and see how things are going.
I've heard that Claremont has de-purpled his porse somewhat since the early
issues, but even if that's not the case Ransom and Larocca's art is always
easy on the eye.

I thought the new Usagi was coming out this week...?
>Batman #615, $2.25
More mindless, well-drawn fun.
>Crumb Comics Vol 1 Early Years SC (Star02357), $19.95
I'll probably get this eventually, since I missed out on the Complete Crumb
books, and I've yet to see them anywhere around here.
>Fantastic Four #69, $2.25
I really like where the current story arc is going.
Delayed weeks are always awkwardly eerie...

I think I'll drop this, too. That would leave New X-Men as the only

that are more of a gamble). Most series I've decided to wait on the

Wonder if I'll have to pay for it this month. My retailer let it slide the
last few times, so long as I brought it back.

believe it's a combination of essays and comics about Moore.

Still evaluating this one. Well, there's always the covers to look forward
to.
I don't find it slow at all. The pace seems to reflect the way the battle
was waged- basically the Canadians won by attrition. Is there even a trade
available? I thought they were waiting for the story to finish (this is the
last issue, and a fine end to the story. I still haven't sat down and reread
all the issues yet.) The complete story will be collected in September.

Still on trial.
The release schedule is slow, not the content. There is a trade of
#1-8. #10 is not the last issue, by far. You have this confused with
something else.
Oops, sorry-you're right. For some reason my brain switched this to Louis
Riel. Another leisurely scheduled Drawn & Quarterly book.

the same face and hairstyle, though.

With this, both Hulk books, and the DC book, it's a big, expensive week
for comic-related books.
> Hulk The Incredible Guide HC, $24.99
I opened the book to a double-page spread of a single image. I flipped
to another page, same thing. And again. And again. I was freaked out and
put it down.
On closer examination, it does contain text, as well. And an index,
which is a nice feature.

Not quite, they're bigger than that. About the size of one Lego figure

Thank you. Never heard of 'em, though.
Chris Sprouse was the artist at the tail end of Supreme and is the
artist on Tom Strong.
My retailer just orders a huge stack of them and lets them all drift out the

You actually have to pay for it? I get it free with my service at my
comic shop.
Up until a few months ago he gave it away to subscribers, but he says
Diamond changed its terms and he now needs to charge us. The deal is we
pay for it, then get the money back if we bring it back. Lately, he's let
the payment slide, since he knows I'll bring it back.

In that case this will still be my first experience with his work.
>I'm still on the fence about this one. Has anyone seen a copy of it yet? I
>believe it's a combination of essays and comics about Moore.
Yes.
It's a great, diverse collection of work. There are spectacular sketches - Jim
Lee, Bill Sienkiewicz, Sam Kieth, James Owen, Duncan Fegredo ("way after Ian
Gibson") spring to mind. And some extended articles, and profiles as well as
shorter vignettes.
It starts with Gary Spencer Millidge's own story of Alan Moore compiled in a 12
panel grid with various relevant art both new and from Moore's books.
And the stories range from "inspired by" to "tribute to" Alan Moore, if it was
just an anthology of comics this would be a good buy, but you add in the above
and long articles by Steve Bissette, the conversation with Dave Sim and the
lecture notes of Jose Alaniz and you've got a bargain.
(And I love the Metaphrog story.)

You can rely on them to be good.
If you a have a problem with the long time between issues, well it'll be your
loss.
The latest issue moves the murder mystery along with the village bobby's
ruminations on the suspects, and a Masonic ritual.

I liked them, although the one where Constantine supposedly died didn't make

The second one looks that way to me.
Haven't read it yet.
The lag time doesn't bother me. It's just that it's a series I've been
getting in trade. My dilemma is do I pass on the issue and count on the
next trade coming out? Or buy the issue in case it never does?
In any case it seems my choice was made for me. My store didn't have any
copies [left?] anyway.

My store owner eventually started giving them to me free, but he gets a
little antsy if I haven't ordered anything from it in a while.
Thanks for the run-down on the contents. It sounds interesting and I guess
I'll have to buy it. Does Bissette tell his usual "Alan just decided he
didn't want to talk to me anymore" story? I'd love to hear what actually
happened to cause Moore to cut him out of his circle. (I know it's just
gossip, but it fascinates me!)

Yeah, but I'm a school librarian. Easier to buy ONE movie

I'd never do that. Previews gives customers the ability to buy comics
without the store risking unsold stock. The store makes a profit with
zero risk.
Any store that pulled that wouldn't be getting my business.
The fact that someone gets Previews at a store doesn't mean that
they'll get items *from* Previews at that store. The store at which I
get Previews is not where I get most of my comics (though I do get a
lot of comics at that store); I use my local shop for impulse
purchases and titles I want to sample before committing to, but get
most of my comics by mail-order.
My situation is odd, but I can't imagine I'm the only person of which
this is true.

Well, there's only one character from the Escape From ... movies in it, and
he's the title character. The likeness is excellent. The writing is

You're not. There are a number of people at my store who only get
Previews, either because they're ordering through the mail to get a
bigger discount or because they want to try to keep up with plotlines
without buying the comics. Either way, it's not something they should
get for free.

If you're pre-ordering from the store, I think it would be a good perk
by the retailer to give away the catalog. To other customers? No, they
should pay.
That's exactly how my old comic book store did it - you order 15 bucks a
month from pre-ordering/pull lists, you get Previews for free. He used to
give it away to everybody for free, but he was trying to drum up the
pre-order business over the course of the year by doing so.

In that case, I can understand it, although I think it's a little
silly to mail order when you have a perfectly good comic shop that
will probably give you better prices and no wait, but to each their
own.

Most stores can't complete directly on price with online deep
discounters, because the online folks don't have to pay for all the
physical costs of having a store. Stores do provide timely service, as
you say, however, and the best ones have better customer service.

No, but you do have to pay shipping most of the time, you can't look
at the comics beforehand and you don't get the comics for a week or
more after they are released. Seems a lot of downsides and not many
upsides for tiny percentage of savings.
Depending on how much I order, shipping is free. I don't need to look
at comics beforehand to know which ones I definitely want to buy. Any
that I'm on the fence about, I don't preorder and instead seek them
out when they're released. I'm not so obsessive anymore that I need my
books the very day they are released. The savings are very significant
for me, something like 35-40% when factoring in no sales tax as well.
Lots of pluses and almost no minuses as far as I'm concerned. ;-)
As far as customer service, the store I order from is a real actual
store with real actual people and real actual regular walk-in
customers (albeit in Illinois), not some mindless automaton
warehouse/catalog company with employees who know nothing about
comics. <g> I'm satisfied with their customer service.
