> DC COMICS

> Birds Of Prey #57, $2.50

*GREAT* first issue...can't wait to see more from Simone on this title.

> Outsiders #2, $2.50

2 more issues to impress me or it's gone.

> MARVEL COMICS
> Inhumans #3, $2.50

It's slow, but not painfully so. Probably my favorite of the 3 Marvel books
I'm currently getting.

Very light week...just what I needed after last week's money vacuum.

Thanks, Charles.

> ANARCHY STUDIOS
> Vampi Vicious #1, $2.99

The Return of The Guilty Reading Pleasure :)

> ARCHAIA STUDIOS PRESS
> Artesia Afire #2 (Of 6), $3.95

Afire #1 was the first Artesia story I'd read, and I was *very* impressed.
The first few pages deliver a feeling of scope and history that most
fantasy-setting comics I've read have struggled to capture.

> DC COMICS

> Birds Of Prey #57, $2.50

Simone's strong first issue (along with the "Secret Files" issue) managed to
make me interested in reading about characters I've never had more than a
peripheral interest in before. Now if only DC would do something about the
art...

> Eye Of The Storm Annual, $4.95

Still undecided, but I'll probably pass on this and hope that the bits I'm
interested in will turn up in future TPBs. Speaking of which...

> Fables Vol 2 Animal Farm TPB, $12.95

Just for the sake of comparison, and because I feel like indulging in a pet
hate:

Fables Vol 2: collects #6-10; most recent monthly issue at time of
publication: #15.
Lucifer Vol 4: collects #21-28; most recent monthly issue at time of
publication: #38.
100 Bullets Vol 6, collects #37-42; most recent monthly issue at time of
publication: #46.

FABLES gets its 2nd tpb out less less than half a year after the last issue
it collects; the monthly-to-tpb lag for LUCIFER is around the 10-month mark;
100 BULLETS looks artificially good because of the delays in the monthly
publication schedule, but is probably running on a simlar schedule to
LUCIFER. TRANSMETROPOLITAN's lag is still abominable by anyone's standards
except, possibly, HELLBLAZER fans waiting for "Rake At The Gates of Hell".

> Outsiders #2, $2.50

Weak-ish first issue that didn't grab me the way I expected, but didn't
drive me off either. I'm looking to cull the monthly reading list a little,
but I'm giving Outsiders a couple of issues to establish itself.

Another one on the endangered list. Mystique has so far managed to be
moderately entertaining without either catching my attention or sending me
running in terror.

Where did all the comics go? This is pathetic!

Graeme you gotta get the first two series (I believe Artesia TPB is
available, and the Artesia Afield TPB will be out in a few weeks). I
was just thinking earlier today that the art, at times, reminds me a
little bit of Charles' Vess... in the painting, mostly.
I won't be visiting the comic shop until the end of next week (timing
it with Previews), but I'd almost consider going this week just to
pick up Artesia Afire #2.

The current story arc's been enjoyable, and it's actually been WRITTEN like a

A bit "pricey," but I enjoyed the previous two issues, so it's worth it, I

I missed out on the second issue, but I liked the first one, so I might give it
a try...

Yup, picked up the first volume a week or two back, and I'm waiting for
"Afield" to come out now. I'm actually getting these for my wife, and was
surprised a) at the quality, and b) that I couldn't recall seeing Artesia
discussed much anywhere.

Coming into "Afire" cold was quite an experience, though - picking up
between battles the way it did, "Afire" really drove home how much work
Smiley (?) had put into fleshing out his world and giving it a distinctive
feel.

After a very slow beginning to the summer, this is the third heavy week in
a row. Oh well, just more good stuff to read, I guess.

I picked up the first TPB a couple of years ago (from Mark himself at
San Diego) and was very impressed! From a distance it had looked like
another bad-girl-with-sword book, so I was pleasantly surprised by the
understated beauty of the art and the staggering amount of world-building.

I think it reads better in TPB -- I'm pretty sure that, if I bought the
individual issues, the time between issues and the amount of detail would
require me to re-read all the prior issues every time one came out, and
that can be frustrating. I feel kind of guilty passing up new issues on
the rack, but since I haven't read any of the second volume yet, I'm not
really tempted to buy any issues of the third. Can't wait for Afield!

When the Afield collection comes out, I'll be revamping its page, but it
is a Comic Worth Reading. I'm just glad to see it back.

I am not into medieval warfare AT ALL. But something about these
books struck a chord in me and I was hooked. In part it's due to the
intrigue - which I'm enjoying more as I get older - but I also think
there's a level of realism with the books that appeals to me. I like
all of the detail with the various religions and prayers and
cultures... and I'm even enjoying the medieval warfare.

It wasn't until my second read through "Artesia" that I really started
understanding who everyone was. I even went so far as to take notes
of who every character was and where they were from and if/when they
died further into the story. This helped me immensely to start seeing
the big picture - and so when "Afield" came out, I understood it much
better and it was very easy to get into. "Afire" is the same way -
the wait is finally over! Yay!

It's simply just an amazing comic, very fun to read if you're one of
those people who like thick fantasy novels, especially in the Martin
vein (a la Game of Thrones) and like themes of maturity and/or
complexity. And the art is awesome!

Hi Johanna, do you mostly buy tpb's? Artesia is great because it's
being released in 6 issue arcs. But man I don't know how you handle
the wait between tpb's... I have to have that monthly (or
semi-monthly) fix. The single issues for Afire are a little pricey
($3.95)- but the cover is nice and thick and I believe there are extra
pages of story, so to me it's worth it.

I managed to get the first series in hardback - but I am now after a
softcover so I can share with my friends. And I'm looking forward for
the Afield collecton tpb for the same reason. This is a book I want
my friends to read, even if I have to buy a tpb to get 'em to do it!
:)

I'll be watching for your site update!

Yep. I'd rather read complete stories. Plus, I've got over a month's
worth of single issues waiting for me to get to them, so even when I try
to keep up, I get behind.
