Sorry if this is a FAQ or a forbidden kind of
query or anything; I'm new here. *8)

My daughter (14) is looking for a book that she
remembers reading a few years ago. She remembers
very little about it, but I thought maybe it
would ring a bell with someone here (suggestions
for alternate places to ask would be great, too).
It's more or less a fantasy.

The heroine is a girl who at first lives with her
sisters and mother, but is sent away for some
reason. At the place to which she is sent away
there is a boy (perhaps named Michael) who is
withdrawn (perhaps because he feels guilt for
an incident in the past, perhaps involving not
stopping a little girl from falling into a well).
There may be a witch there also, who may wear
green. The place may have "grey" in its name.

Later, Michael is taken underground (perhaps
into that same well), perhaps by the people
who live down there. The heroine follows
after. Down in the underground, she lives
with and/or is taught by and/or in some sense
joins the creatures (small people? trolls?
faeries?) who live down there. They consider
the luxuries of the upper world to be trash,
and vice-versa. Eventually the heroine finds
and rescues and/or escapes with the boy, and
they return to the upper world. She is afraid
that he will like her sisters better than he
likes her (or something like that), but he
doesn't.

Very specific, eh? *8) Any suggestions
most welcome...

I'm pretty sure it's _The Perilous Gard_ by Elizabeth Marie Pope. The
heroine is sent away from home because she did something to offend Queen
Mary (she was one of Princess Elizabeth's ladies in waiting). She goes
to a mansion in the north of England. The son of the household is
depressed because he failed to prevent his baby stepsister falling into
a well, then allows himself to be taken captive by "fairies". The
heroine goes after him.

What wonderful service! We are forever in your
debt. *8) That was it exactly (she's jumping
around and clapping her hands; I think we've
made a convert to the wonders of Usenet!).

Tx so much,

That's it! I was just thinking that I'd read the book, but couldn't remember
the name. It's a good one.
