And me as well. I knew just what a piece of greatness we had as soon as I
heard:
>And hey, you forgot to mention the KICK ASS opening theme.....
...this. The opening theme is outstanding! Even more so when you have a
translation (as we do, in our sub of Eva $1 we're sending to Anime East ^_-)
What makes this show tick, for me, is just that it's such a total
PACKAGE. *Everything* is done well- it's got good writing, excellent OPM
and BGM, killer artwork, it's paced well, it's got good voice acting, it's
directed to-the-teeth excellently... some of these folks doing OVA's
need to take a look over their collective shoulders, as Eva surpasses a
lot of the supposedly "superior animation" one-shots- quite a feat for a
fr***in' *TV SERIES*!!!
Hopefully, we'll be able to incorporate the Eva OP theme into our Dance
Mix for next year's Anime Weekend Atlanta- it's just too catchy a tune to
pass up!!!
Regards,
Gordon.

A bit about the voice acting. I found it surprising that they got

Gundam. Macross. Votoms. Patlabor. Any mecha fan worth his salt knows
these shows by heart, knows what they stand for and what makes them so great.
They know about mobile suits, GERWALKs, ATs, labors. They know Char Aznable,
Lin Minmay, Chirico Cuvie, Captain Goto. And soon enough, they'll know
about NERV, about the Disciples, about Shinji Ikari, and about what I believe
is the most important mecha show of the 1990's: SHIN SEIKI EVANGELION.
The background, surprisingly enough, is not given to us on a platter at
the start of episode 1, but enough has been written about it on the fan
press. All the phropesies were true: the End of the World came to happen
at the start of the Second Millenium, but in a way nobody could have
imagined. In the year 2000, aliens calling themselves the Disciples
attack Earth mercilessly as part of a jihad, causing destruction so
massive weather patterns all over the globe were disrupted for decades.
They give the people of Earth an ultimatum: we must stop all research on
genetic engineering OR ELSE. The Disciples leave, promising they will
return to make sure we are obeying. Earth, of course, didn't comply.
The United Nations created a covert organization called NERV whose sole
purpose is to handle the alien threat when it returns. Taking a cue from
the aliens' own gigantic war machines (codenamed "Angels"), a team of
scientists working under the leadership of Gendoh Ikari design
bionegineered humanoid war-machines, the Evangelions. Our story begins
in 2015, as the Angels return to Earth.
[Before I go on, I should explain that this show is *not* an out-and-out
kick-ass-fest. For those of you who only like that kind of stuff, just
keep the second act of episode 2 on infinite loop. In fact, there are
no mecha whatsoever in episode 4!]
I won't go in depth about the plots of the individual episodes, you can
read the scripts at http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~wadakun/trans/ (bless your
heart, Wada-kun!). Suffice to say the writing on this show is above
and beyond anything seen on TV for years. Intelligent, insightful stuff.
And by this I don't mean that the characters themselves are (they would
be boring characters if they all were), but the writing is. The mood of
the show is serious, not a wild take or cutesy pet/kawaii-fodder to be
seen anywhere.
The mecha design and animation is, well, GAINAX. Instead of waxing poetic,
I might as well point you towards GUNBUSTER, which shares much of its
mechanical design aesthetic. The Evangelions themselves don't look a thing
like the pudgy RXs from Gunbuster. These are twisted, mishappen things,
almost *evil*. (That's what happens when you don't have a toy company as
your sponsor, kids. ^_^;)
I could keep typing for pages and pages about this show, but I'll stop here.
You'll certainly hear me raving about EVANGELION in the months to come.
I don't want to spoil all the surprises. And I wouldn't call it "Kick Ass",
just "very cool". The soundtrack is very good, IMO. Somehow, the mood of
the music keeps reminding me of 0083.
(The Bakuretsu Hunter OP is what I would call "kick ass". I'll
post a review after I've gotten WATCHABLE copies of 1 and 2. >_<)
: And hey, you forgot to mention the KICK ASS opening theme.....
Yup, the opening theme is good, but the ending theme is pretty weak.
Freddy
Yeah, this show is goiung to be a landmark of mecha anime. I usually
judge a TV series by how much exicting expectation (ie, 'waku-waku' ^_^)
for a next episode it gives to me and Evangelion is, in this context,
the best anime since old "Conan The Future Boy". The OP, which starts
in slow acapella like Nadia, is very very good, too.
>The mood of
>the show is serious, not a wild take or cutesy pet/kawaii-fodder to be
>seen anywhere.
In this, Misato will be a key to decide the mood of the show. She is
the only one so far who would say a joke and can release the tension.
Without her, I think the show would be too serious. And becuase of this
her serious words have more impact to me than those of anyone else.
>The mecha design and animation is, well, GAINAX. Instead of waxing poetic,

I thought the mecha (both Evangelion and Angel) very organic. They
reminded me of old UltraSeven monsters. In anime, Kyoshinhei of
Nausicaa seems closest to them. I agree Evangelion looks "almost evil"
but thought of Angel in a different way. Imagine it has the voice
of Ryououki (Myaoooon!), wouldn't it be cute ^_^;;

I've been thinking about this exact thing myself... OK- here's a question
that's been burning on my mind for a couple of days now:
ATTENTION: ALL YOU COMMERCIAL ANIME PEOPLE OUT THERE:
We've been contemplating continuing subbing Eva past the first episode
(which we did for AWA). However, if *any of you companies have plans to
release it*- PLEASE email me privately, and we will desist *now*. I ask
because I've heard that someone has asked Anime East to not show Eva in
their video rooms for some unknown but apparently official reason...
This makes me really hopeful that the reason might be that *someone is
picking Eva up for US distribution*- that would make me happier than
just about any anime release I have sean in *quite a while*, nae, even
more than Giant Robo (and THAT'S saying a LOT!^_^) We're talking Wings
of Honneamise levels of enthusiasm here, folks ^_-...
Again, email me if your company might have this in the pipeline- I promise
the news will remain *confidential* and will not leave the small group
here who subbed the first ep for AWA. You have my vow of silence if you
wish it to be so.
Thanks in advance for any info...
Regards,
Gordon.

I have a contact with an animator of GAINAX.
I will tell him.
He says "Eva will be more accepted in U.S. than in Japan."
Kentaro ONIZUKA
I thought the aliens called themselves the Disciples.
The Angels are their war "machines".
>They claim to be messengers of God. They are testing us.
Yes... but how do we know if we passed the test?
In japanese, it's "Shin Seiki Evangerion", which literally translates to
"New Century Evangelion", but I've only seen the show referred to as
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" thus far.
Is "Neon Genesis Evangelion" the 'official' english sub-title
accompanying the japanese title or a case of an early mis-tranlation?
(considering how often in the past english sub-titles for anime are simply
wild "translations" of the japanese title into english, like this, I'm
banking it's the show's english title)

Because I'm editting Neon Genesis Evangelion FAQ on fj.rec.animation
(anime ng for japanese speakers),I can tell my interpretation:
aliens are called "Shito"(apostles) in the anime(Japanese).
But GAINAX refers them as Angel in their Evangelion web page(index-e.html).
Also,"Evangelion" is a Greek-originated word,which means Gospells.
Characters refer to "Evangelion" as "Eva"(Eve in German?).
So,I think GAINAX gives these names dual-meanings.
Gospells and apostles originate from the Christianity as
Salvation of humanity.
Angels and Eva originate from Testament in which the God often judges
humanity cruelly.
Because most of Japanese fans of anime (including me) are ignorance of Christianity,
my interpretation may be incorrect.

Japanese fans wonder if ending themes are little bit different each other in each episodes,
and singers are also different...
Some fans wonder if Hayashibara Megumi sang ED of 5th episode.

it's a safe bet we probably failed. ^_^;;;;

Actually, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" is not English, but Greek.
In Greek "Neon Genesis" means

This explains a lot (thinks about second act of episode 2).
[stuff deleted]
This may be off the topic of the thread. But there was something
that was bugging me...
The three pilots are all 14 years old, I take it? They're called
First, Second, and Third Child.
The Disciples warns Earth to stop their *genetic* research...
How much do you want to bet that the three childs have been
conceived artificially?
Just a thought.

There are a lot of misteries in Evangelion. I hope it will be solved
until the last episode,,,
Kentaro ONIZUKA
That is correct, sir.

Gee, after all the clues thrown our way thus far, I'd be surprised if
they WEREN'T. (Except Gendo and Shinji's father/son relationship, albeit
strained, contradicts the theory... hmm.)
This is noticeable on the different Japanese and English titles they use.
They *do* have native English speakers like Mike House on the GAINAX staff,
so they know what they're doing.

Off topic?? I don't think so! This has begun to be the source of comments

"Born" *one year* after the "ultimatum" in 2000...

Yep, and smart money has it that they're probably from the DNA of Dr.
Ikari, suitably modified, of course... specially engineered to be able to
interface with Eva. Apparently, the genetic mods got better over time, as
Shinji (the Third Child) is able to interface much easier at first than
Rei (the Second)...
That's the theory here, and I can't wait to see if we're right! ^_^

No it doesn't! Think 'Wasshu' and 'Ryouko'... @_@
My theory remains that Gendo took his own DNA and modified it to allow
his children to interfact with Eva... at least in the case of Shinji.
It makes sense, if Shinji were his *own* child- you're always more likely
to do your own ones *right* (see how Shinji interfaces so much easier
