Hello All,

This http://www.reading2016.org.uk/2016/04/25/reading-makerspace-bring-the-tomorrows-technology-to-reading-today/ is the proposed web page for rLab's stage at the postponed Tomorrow's Reading Event that is to be on Saturday 7th May. I will be confirming it is ok with the council publicity contact shortly, unless I have missed anything critical. Any extra eyes appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike.

Why the aversion to the use of the term ‘hackspace’? Won’t referring to us as Reading Makerspace just invite confusion and limit the benefits for us in terms of attracting new members?

Agreed, we are a Hackspace and proud of it.

tbh I don't know why we don't settle on the makerspace name, it has at least as much traction and understanding but none of the negative connotation of hackspace.

Hehe. I'm not too bothered either way. Just seems to me makerspace is more self explanitory to people who don't know what it is.  I wonder if people clinging to hackspace out of priciple over functionality?  Most of the new places opening up seem to be going for makerspace or something else.

Not sure I care much either way (though understanding of the word hack is now increasing eg I see it at work) but think we should be consistent in our marketing to avoid confusion

Thank you for your observations. You should see that as published and in the press releases, the name is Reading Hackspace.

I am creating a spreadsheet listing the items being displayed. It has a column for hosts and PAT Testing status. I will need to supply a list of staff (Hosts) prior to the event. Hosts are responsible for themselves and their items complying with Green Park safety requirements. Please review the ss and let me know if you would like to have edit rights, and any changes that might be helpful.

Thanks
Mike.

Hi Mike, I wasn't aware my name was down for this and I'm afraid I can't make Saturday. Did you have me listed as bringing/doing something?

I admit to using the terms Makerspace and Hackdpace a bit fluidly depending on the context.

I think that if getting new members is important, retaining them is critical, and so what they find when they get here should match their expectation more or less, in terms if environment.

As I look around me right now, what we are is solidly a Hackspace, both in terms of rLab premises and how people interact.  Things are only as organised as they need to be to work, which is fine.

Those branding as Makerspace tend to be heading towards the Fablab end if things, have nice carpets, shinier equipment and ideally paid staff to induct more casual and newbie users.  This is usually only achievable with funding from somebody's outreach budget, and comes with constraints and expectations.

Personally I think Makerspace is a generic term, under which hackspaces and fablabs fall, so it's oK to use as a description, especially if in context 'hack' would be off putting, I do this often, but I think we should be proudly a Hackspace, and not mis-sell what people will find here!  There are things we can do that would be hard in a Fablab, and it is all self built, so we can be proud of telling people that if the interest and context suit!

Cheers
Alex

Thank you very much Manoel, I have added you to he list. We set up from 9am, you need to be there  before 11am at the latest. The event is open to the public 12noon-6pm, Green Park Conference Centre.

Andy, I didn't have you down to bring anything for this revised date, just as a potential helper. I will remove your name from the list. Thank you for your original offer, I think it would have been easier for everyone had it gone ahead in March as planned.

And I have to thank Scott for his help in PAT testing last night, a longer, slower process than I thought, but the Repair Cafe Tester has now been Christened, just in time to get it re-calibrated.

rLab and Alex's 3DP featured on Anne Diamond Radio Show this morning: Starts at 1h47m http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03rf47b this is not the main rlab feature though, that should be on tomorrow about 10am on the same show.

On Tues Ian P. was featured just after 10am on the same show, so we are doing well this week.

Hello Matt, and a message to all.

It is great to see our stand featured so positively in Video and Pic in the local media, I spotted Ryan, Alex, Richard's robots, Andrew B and the matrix, Manoels art work and the Mayor. I need to watch a few more times, but just want to really thank everyone who helped make the event a success. We got messed about with the postponement in March and that, but yesterday made it all worthwhile.

rLab did the visitors, Reading town and all hackspaces proud, and I thank those that came and helped on the day, and also those that helped behind the scenes. I am so pleased to feel that Reading showed it could successfully host this first FutureFest event outside London. The pictures and video show how the rLab 'stage' was a great draw to all. The organisers and local reps now understand what a hackspace is and I am sure it will help in the future

And thanks to Scott for the PAT testing that set my mind over the safety requirements. Also to Stuart L and the NADHack'ers.

The weather was great while we were indoors daytime, however the day finished with a great party, great BBQ, great lasers and a great crowd at the 3rd Anni. party. Thanks to all that organised that. Anyone spotted the quad-copter footage posted anywhere?

Thanks Again,
Mike
