Hey all,

Been working on a bit of a 'side project' :)

Catch me, the Hackspace, Simon Reeve, Jude Pullen from the superman project, and a bunch of other awesome hackers/etc on Big Life Fix, tonight at 9 on BBC2.

PVR set to record. This is the start of an amazing telly career. Next: Scrapheap Challenge. Two years: Your own show. Ten years: Bar man in Eastenders.

Caught it last night, amazing!

Should do a good job of raising the profile of makerspaces (hackspaces), and also launching Ryan's acting career (maybe in nature documentaries)

You'd better be careful Ryan, you'll be eating lizard tongues with a side order of kangaroo gonads in a "Jungle" before you know it!

Any chance of a talk one day at the space on your exploits (pass on kangaroo nuts) with some technical details of the Internet feed, wireless links and general Mesh Potato configs?

I'd be happy to run a Q+A session, but I'm definitely not an expert in this.

Most information I needed in the article, one question though

You were considering powering some kit with a solar panel but didn't in the end, but did you have any kit in mind that would provide a continuous 10w ish?  (enough for two Nanos?)    i.e. what combination of solar panel and size of lead-acid battery to get over the dull days?

I wouldn't solar power unless there was literally no way to run cable.

I thought it was brilliant - the best thing on telly for ages - and watching Gogglebox last night (segment from about 35 mins in), it was interesting to see that a wide range of them thought the same. I’m looking forward to next week’s.

If there was one, small aspect that I had mixed feelings about, it was the way that the fixers were introduced as being some of the finest minds in the country. Not that you’re not all 'smarter than the average bear’ - I know from first hand experience just how smart you are, Ryan. It’s just that you don’t necessarily have to be the brightest person to take these challenges on - being empathetic, creative and having determination/confidence in your ability to solve a problem is in many respects more important than brain-power. With access to the internet and modern tools, these sort of solutions are there for anyone willing to throw themselves at a problem - it’s not like you’ve done degrees in how to set-up a radio link / design gears etc.

It’s a great, positive piece of television and in parts v moving. I wonder if it would have more impact still if it was framed in terms of ‘look what *you* could do, if you got off your sofa and applied yourself'.

You know I was thinking the same thing. I hope that message comes across in future episodes, but other than that is was very good telly and nice to see all those mystery projects Ryan has been working on are all about ;-)

Yep, I tried really hard to make that point too Gavin, that we're not particularly special and anyone can do this stuff, but it's TV...

To relight an old thread - I just saw this on the BBC News site:

So sounds like it did not work out in the end - which is a shame.  I wonder if the Welsh weather got to it.
