Pretty Nice work you did on that tank!!!

Lot of scaled parts!!

Am I rigth to think that you made your own 3d printed gearbox??

And by looking at your videos, it seems that you will make this tank FPV with a moving periscope on the cupola??!!

Eager to see more details on your projects!!

Yes your right-All moving parts are printed, including the gearboxes. And yes, my Centurion will be controled with FPV gear. That mens 2 camers: one in the tover and one pointing with the canon. And a laser pointer also to aim with :-)

Now i have the bottom of my Centurion running! All parts made with my 3D printer ( including gears) 2*800 watt brushles motors, with homemade cooling, and car escs to control it. The video proff that brushles plane motors works in a big tank.

Super job!! Look anwsome!!

I got few questions...!

What size your airplane motors are ??

What material your using for your gears?? I know there is new wires to make super strong gearing out of nylon...

What is the thing you made up for not overheating your motor?

And after all this did you see any sign of wear on any of your part?? Because your project seem to proof that the futur of our hobby pass by the 3d printing like almost in any hobby it seems...!!

Thank you

Iam using thise motors: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8490__Turnigy_4258_Brushless_Motor_800kv.html
I print everything in PLA. And the thing around my motors are a cooling tube, with 2*45mm fan units in the top-Its home made like everything om my tank, i also made all drawings. I dont no yet if there are ant wear on my gears-But i can se wear marks on the tracks

PLA?  That's biodegradable so don't let it get wet for any length of time.  Awesome work btw.

Yes thats right :-)-tests have been made-After one year outside in sun and rain, an objeckt made of pla will get pale, but nothing are seen on the plastic.
The most common form of bioplastic is polylactide acid or PLA and is made out of corn. Unfortunately, in order for PLA do biodegrade, it needs a certain kind of bacteria at just the right temperature. These are not found in landfills, (where most plastic bags end up), but require treatment at one of 42 commercial composting facilities in the U.S.

So i will not take my Centurion near one of the 42 composting facilities-But just stay in Denmark-And my tank will be safe :-)

What you have to worry more about PLA is its warpage in the heat. PLA parts will begin to warp if left in a hot car or possibly just leaving your tank in the sun. Printing with ABS will eliminate warpage and yield stronger parts, but for true durability you should look into nylon.

Most of my parts are printet with 99% infill-Ore vith 2mm walls and 20 % infil

Pla are strongere than ABS-But not elastic. Its almost like the cast iron of plastic. Make a solid 4-5mm pla part and se for yourself. ABS stinks when printet-And wrap alot during the printing. In Denmark where i live, high temperature are rare. And if one parts break i can easyly print a new one.
By the way-Wood are also bio degradeable-And it will degrade faster than PLA-Maby paintball filled with termittes will work better :-)

By "stress test", I think he means something like driving full speed over an obstacle that generates a lot of dynamic stress on the parts, such as in this video:

https://youtu.be/qkO4s0F5AyQ

Driving on flat surfaces with a heavy load is a good test, but driving into and over things at full speed is the ultimate test of a vehicle :--)

Everything hold up wherry good-I have broken a road wheel onse and 2 suspensions arms. But it is easy just to print a new spare part. My traks are spray paintet flat black, and i hope that the paint will wear off on the part that tutces the ground, and on the sprocket. It will give a more realistic look.

The turret are not turning full speed wherry much, And the motor never get hot. The main engines are cooled, and are not working real hard. I can run for more than 2 hours, with only 13A battery-2* 6.6A 4S battery. The motors can make 800watt each-But they never get use of all that power. I have uset brushless motore alot over the latest 6 years-So i now what they can handle :-)

I agree that this tank looks GORGEOUS!

And the concept of 3D printing application to the RC large scale vehicle is enticing

However, I will follow the advice of the “old timers” of RC Tank Combat, the Pitelli “clan”, Professor Sommers, or Tyng Tech prodigy: It’s all in the ‘donut’ turns on grass!

This is not the beautiful RC Tanks that I commission-build for customers which can pass this test. RC Tank Combat is the next step up in engineering and ingenuity to survive the Gettysburg test for 2 days in a row…

I’m impatiently waiting your trial runs

I would also be “pained” to shoot such a beautiful vehicle!

BTW, did you test the .68cal paintball hits on 3D printed parts? I have a 3D printer using ABS filament, and I don’t think it could take a point-blank hit.

Cheers,

Loic

What are you printing, Loic? My Locust survived a two-day event using 3D printed idlers and TTS sprockets. Both the idlers and sprockets took hits with no visible damage. My mantlet was also 3D printed and took a LOT of hits over the weekend. It had a layer of fiberglass reinforcement on it, but it didn't show any damage either.
I believe that 3D printing has a lot of uses in RCTC, but there are some things that it just isn't isn't suitable for. For example, I tried 3D printing suspension units for my Locust. (there are some pics in a past thread) Initial results looked promising, but long term durability just wasn't there. The constant stress of a 50lb. tank on the printed parts eventually broke many of the suspension units.
On the flip side there are some cool capabilities that these printers put forth. The illustration I'll use for this point is my Locust turret. For one thing, the Locust is a small tank, but it's turret is equally small. (about 8.5in in dia. plus the little storage area in the back)  To get a nice accurate turret without the inside being bulky I designed the turret on a CAD program and then printed it in three pieces. After gluing the pieces together I fiberglassed it. This gave me a nice durable turret that didn't waste the limited internal space available.

I have no one to fight with so far-I have a fiend , that are making the same Centurion-I made alle the 3D printet parts for him. Most of the printet parts are hided under the side skirts-Wits are made of 1.5 mm steel plate. And alot og my parts have 100 % infil-And then they are bulletproof. And if a part break-I can easily print a new one.

No one answered my question on hov to get my Centurion on this site  http://www.rctankcombat.com/order-of-battle/tanks/

BTW, did you test the .68cal paintball hits on 3D printed parts? I have a 3D printer using ABS filament, and I don’t think it could take a point-blank hit.

Love it! Can you change the way the aim looks? Would love to put a German OPTICS scale like the real tank! It would allow for quick judging for distance and you could score some long shots!!

O no-You cant use brushless aeroplane motors for a tank! And you cant use 3D printer to make moving parts with!!
I done both-motors are 2* 800 watt brushless aeroplane motors running on 4S lipo
And all moving parts are printet with PLA on my  3D printer.
And iam happy with the outcome!

Great work Niels,

I noticed you run on asphalt. Would love to see your tank run in grass.

Also, could you take a picture of your tracks after your running? Those donuts turns are hard on plastic. Is this PLA or other polycarbonates?

Your tank looks awesome

Cheers from Utah,

Loic

I dont have any late run on gras on video-Only the first one, made 1 year ago-But it runs in the same way:

It have hardly grinded the paint from the tracks yet-The donuts turns dont do any harm-PLA is hard.

And my tank are strong-Photo from last year-before the paint job
